posted a message on Expansion Creation Competition - Phase IV [Discussion]

Frustrating, but I'm out. The poll splitting and 4 days of voting feels like a bad format for this. The first poll had twice as many views and votes, so I've lost to people who received as few as 6 votes. I mean, I only got 11 votes, so I'm not trying to shit on anyone. I think it's just clear that public interest in the competition drops dramatically as we continue on, and makes me question the elimination format quite a bit.

Still, congrats to everyone! I'll stop by and offer some feedback when I can. I'll probably keep developing my stuff on my own elsewhere. Unlike the class competition, I still feel good about the overall direction of my project. Time to re-evaluate and consider paths forward.

On the bright side, I'm now free to create new ways of displaying my set! This was a simple test of the 'Contact Sheet' feature in photoshop, I want to play around with more narrative ways of display the set too. So on a final note, here's my set phase 1-3, all lined out in one nice big graphic. Click it to expand.

Honestly guys, I know everyone is excited about continuing their expansions, but the poll threads should be about the current entries from this and the last polls. Adding potential future cards could sway votes. The discussion thread should have been left unlocked to allow additional conversation.

Yeah, I expressed this in the last thread, and because of that I hid things in spoilers without any "LOOK AT THIS SPOILER" tactics. I think for the next rounds poll, we should leave the discussion thread unlocked, maybe just remove the sticky pin from it, so it drops down the page, letting the polls have first billing.

I would put these into my wild egg druid deck so fast!

A lot of people are running wild token druid just like standard, with innervate, fledglings, hydras. SO WRONG. it's all about 1 drops, eggs, and knife jugglers. Why not add tons of zero drops to trigger those knives? I'm not exactly sure what I'd cut to get these in, probably my Enchanted Ravens, maybe even my haunted creepers.

Wisp Caller is maybe OP. I'm not sure Commune with Nature is OP, depends how many wisp generators you add beyond this.

Not to derail from the competition, but I think KFT is looking great. Fatespinner, Bring It On!, Dead Man's Hand, Cryostasis, Shadowblade, Coldwraith, Sindragosa, and Nerubian Unraveler are all really sweet cards.

Edit: seeing those names in purple text is making me realize how much dust I'm going to be burning reaaaal soon.

    NAILED IT!!!

Man, I'm actually very surprised by this card. It's a design I've seen a bunch of times, and I know it's popular, but I figured it'd always need to be like a ton of mana to be balanced. Free From Amber works at 8 mana, I'm surprised this Eternal Servitude is only 4. I guess the logic is that high cost minions get most of their value from a battlecry? That priest runs too many minions at low costs?
This is the closest I've come to duplicating a card. Big round eyes, goofy smile, nailed it!

In regards to switching up the format for the next big competition, its something we can look into. Some initial points of concern:

    • Keeping many of our entrants - lets say 100 people - becomes a big strain on us as mods to run the competition. That's what, 10 polls each round to keep them clean looking? 5 polls if you don't mind sifting through 20 entries of stuff per poll? Do we run polls simultaneously or one after another? Then we also have to make sure we're keeping track of whatever scoring method we're using - and that that scoring method is fair - across all the rounds.
    • Another issue - yes, less people are casually checking in per round, some of which is likely down to lack of exposure due to upcoming expansion, but I don't know that people would be interested in checking multiple polls per round, with many different entrants. It's just so much work for the casual viewer. Compared to now, where there's just a few entries and they can digest them easily.
    • Finally, since we'd obviously keep our scoring method open and be revealing the number of votes after each round for transparency, people would be able to see who's leading. Many people might just drop out after seeing they didn't get that many points and don't think its worth it. We'd end up with weird, uneven numbers of competitors, and due to the low retention of multiple polls I can't help but feel that a few people would be obviously in the lead the whole way through.

As I said, totally willing to consider switching it up, but those are just my initial hesitancies with that specific idea.

These are good points, and seeing it from the mod perspective is important. Your final point, that people would voluntarily drop out, is actually a good thing maybe? I'm not pointing fingers, but I'm guessing a number of people in phase 2 realized how time intensive this would be and dropped. Maybe by phase 3 or 4 we could start doing elimination polls, and let people self-select out as they realize that they don't have the time, interest or interest from voters.
I say all of this, because way back when we had that discussion thread about the next 'big comp', one of the things I voiced was whether making a full set is a good use of time, or whether I'd really want to develop 135 cards. Because of that, I was hesitant to partake. I didn't want to steal a slot from someone who did want to go all the way. When the rules were revealed, with a 'half-set' of cards, I decided I could handle that and would see it through, how ever far I got.
Anyway, no need to go too deep into a pre-emptive autopsy while the competition is still going! I'm sure we can revisit this stuff before the next season's big competition.

    Well, this happened.

Well, in the expansion I had that I got eliminated from, this happened:
I guess we all thought that a 4/3 statline justified a little bit more than Elusive.
I'm sad that four people missed this phase. It kinda hurts because you know you would've completed yours, were you not eliminated— but then, they didn't complete theirs, so that's elimination too.
I feel you. I have a post above, questioning whether an elimination format is the right way to do these long-form competitions. It's a shame that people were kicked out, and others who stayed in couldn't find time to finish. I don't want to bash those people too hard, things come up and life doesn't take a break for a silly competition. Hopefully for the next long-form competition next season, we can learn some lessons and adjust the format.
And I don't think either of you were wrong to do 4/3 elusive with an 'extra' bit. Bearshark is a little underwhelming and intentionally simple. It's not a card made for defining a set or meta, but it's still a card that should be a good arena pick and might find a place in mid-range hunter (if that ever exists again, lol).

I think I might be going for this one, thoughts?

While I'm sure this seems fair and balanced, Meteor costs 1 more mana and does 11 more damage.  Not to mention it can just be used as single target removal. Also compare this to Dragonfire Potion or Flamestrike.
It's like we're brainwashed into making hunter cards bad.

<insert usual rant about arbitrary and meaningless competition prompts>

Most of you have heard it probably, but these kind of prompts are bad. This isn't how game design works.
