Deathbringer Saurfang Boss Guide - The Lower Citadel
The second boss of the Lower Citadel you'll encounter is Deathbringer Saurfang. He can only be attacked with weapons, so I hope you've got a stash sitting around.
Fight Details
Deathbringer Saurfang is an interesting fight in that he only has 20 Health instead of the usual 30 and he can only be damaged by one source - your weapons! The fight requires some good control on your part to prevent him from healing and to ensure his entire board isn't just taunt minions (which he has plenty of).
Yarr harrr! We've had fun with your typical ladder destroying Pirate Warrior deck. Just make sure you get weapons out as soon as humanly possible and smack him in the face. Try to keep minions in play to deal with his taunt minions; Sometimes he'll go face with his rather than trade so don't feel bad about passing if trading would result in a minion death that wouldn't kill a taunt.
Watch Out for These Cards
- Blood Beast - They need to be taken out as soon as possible or all that damage you've done doesn't matter.
- Skeletal Knight - Good idea to ignore this when possible. The odds of you getting something useful are slim.
Rewards
Unlike previous adventures, this boss does not reward you with a new card. Instead, you will receive a Frozen Throne card pack upon completion of the Lower Citadel wing.

The Year of the Raven changed things up enough that this gave me some trouble. I ended up with a control Rogue deck that eventually ran him out of cards. Took a while using just the Rogue's hero power but I got it done. I wish I had a Kingsbane, that might have made it go a little faster.
Some quick asides, fatigue won't kill him and Heroic Strike does work *if* you have a weapon equipped.
This might be a stupid question but would it be possible to build a deck to hold him off and deal with his minions and then let fatigue kill him? Or would that cost even more than a normal deck?
Well, I found out the hard way that Heroic Strike doesn't count as a weapon by itself... Literally had him at 4 HP but already used all 4 of my weapons and didn't get any heroic strikes until like turn 20... fuck this boss.
I beat it in 3 games with
This is so fucking stupid. He can destroy minions, heal himself, can only be damaged by weapons yet he does not take face dmg when he attacks. He plays taunt minions and I can't kill him because of shitty cards because of shitty rewards. I really dislike that blizz has this high requirement low reward stance. Think of it realistically, if you have a basic deck of either Rogue or Warrior and he starts spitting taunts out your weapon is useless. If you make a minion strong to taunt their minions he destroys that minion. You are class locked because at this stage you only have 2 classes that have weapons (with enough dmg to kill him) and he is not bound by the "2 clone cards only per deck" with his 6 blood shits.
If you're a new player this deck would cost exactly: 1200 excluding Deadly Poison since it would be a standard deck level requirement.
Two words: Oil Rogue
It's both cheap and powerful enough.
I just said. Oil rogue costs 1200 if you dont have the cards! cheap my ass
It can't get much cheaper than that. Sorry
Found this neat interaction :D
If you play Archbishop Benedictus , He would say something like 'Fine , take it!'
Funny interaction if you play the Lich King card. Saurfang will ask the Lich King. "What are you doing here?" haha
One of the easiest boss battles to beat if you are lacking in cards and you can do it with just the basic cards. His hero power is almost useless in getting value and his deck is lacking in both heavy threats and AOE removal for minions that can't be pinged and his only hard removal is crush. Not only that but he even gives you cards with skeletal knights and will attack face with his weapons making it easy for you to get the card advantage.
I did it on my alt account by picking garrosh, letting him hit face while I armored up, and once his weapon was gone I used vanilla minions like yeti and boulderfist ogres as well as korkons and shattered sun clerics to completely take over the board. You might use war axe for removal but save your reapers till he has no cards and you have board control to ensure he won't heal from your reaper damage and go in for the kill.
Pretty easy. Did it with priest for the lulz. I did find a minor Easter egg though.
And it is what exactly?
Take control of Blood Beast and Saurfang will tell you something along the lines of good luck getting those blood stains washed out.
If you equip a Gorehowl when facing him, Saurfang would say "Impressive!"
After accidentally putting it in my deck, I learned where Fool's Bane got its name from
Control Pally with DK Uther: constant heals and taunts ran Saurfang out of cards and Four Horsemen win condition works.
Used shaman doomhammer and weapon buff approach
same. I smiled when he acknowledges the Doomerang with "I should get one of those"
