Lord Marrowgar Boss Guide - The Lower Citadel
The first boss of the Lower Citadel you'll encounter is Lord Marrowgar, the Gatekeeper.
Fight Details
This fight will require that you kill Lord Marrowgar in one swift hit to the face due to his Hero Power, Skeletal Reconstruction, fully healing himself at the end of his turn. To accomplish this, we're going to need a One Turn Kill style deck which will require some setup, or a way to steal some of his overpowered cards.
One fun and easy way to deal with this is the old-school Divine Spirit + Inner Fire combo on top of a stolen Bone Spike. You don't even need to get it crazy high, just doubling its health once (to 16) is enough since at the start of your turn you'll hit Marrowgar for 15 automatically followed by 16 for the kill.
Special Notes
- Mindbreaker does not work on this fight.
Watch Out for These Cards
- Bone Spike - This needs to be removed immediately. Stealing it is also an option.. an incredibly rude one at that.
- Bone Storm - Good luck with super aggro decks, a couple of these and your board is wiped out. The card draw for him sucks too.
- Bryn'troll, the Bone Arbiter - Having some form of weapon removal is a very good idea. This can deal a total of 18 damage over 3 turns.
- Skeletal Knight - Killing this could give you a fun way to swing things into your favor.
Rewards
Unlike previous adventures, this boss does not reward you with a new card. Instead, you will receive a Frozen Throne card pack upon completion of the Lower Citadel wing.

I just spent 4 hours trying all the listed decks I could find that supposedly make this an easy fight and can't draw the cards, and if I do I'm dead before the combo goes off. I hate this game so much right now. I feel like I'm rolling a dice over and over and losing.

Hey guys! I started playing hearthstone 4 days ago and I tried to beat this Skeleton Lord. Actually after studying a little bit this kind of fight(few tries to understand how the AI played) I managed to beat him with a priest and I would say a basic deck in just 3 tries:
If you have questions please contact me in telegram @DotDot92
Anyway basic strategy: I understood that the only way to kill him was to deal a critical shot. So I had to lest say "pump" my lightspawn with power word shield and then double two times the minion's health with Divine spirit. Obviously I had to collect all these four cards and cast them in only one turn so I had to resist and heal myself for many turns until I reached 10 mana. This is why I am full of cards with taunt and spells to kill his terrific 15 damages minions. It was quite easy and with a little of luck I overkilled him!
Hope this helps
I started playing a week ago and managed to kill this boss thanks to this deck, i tried others and failed a few times and with this one i killed him in my 3 attempt, thanks for the deck.
Thank you! I killed Lord Marrowgar with the first play using this deck. This basic deck saved my sanity. I only needed 80 dust to craft the 2 x Lightspawn to build out the deck, so this was perfect for my frugal self.
Thank you for posting! It took me longer than some of the other posts I saw that used your deck, but in the end it worked. This was a great basic deck for beating Marrowgar.
Very solid deck for a beginner, +1 well deserved, job well done! Having played for a bit more time than you I had the deck very much improved with these cards to easily deal with Bone Spike:
Taking out:
I tried this deck for 3 hours and didn't win. I don't know what kind of voodoo luck you guys have but I sure don't. He puts out so many cards I can't do anything about it.
can you please tell me which cards replace which..specifically..im confused between the cards that cost different
I just did it at first attempt with a Budget OTK Dragon Priest very similar to this one
I was lucky though, and discovered Scaled Nightmare, so if you have this one in your deck, it might be a good trade instead of the Ooze, that there are no use of anyway, since he doesn't equip a weapon.
57 attempts and I give up. Every time I steal is cards, I get Bone Storm or Tomb Pillager. EVERY TIME.
GG Blizz, first time I give up on your expansion at 1st boss, thank God it was free. Now I remember why I stopped playing since last expansion came out... all about luck and no skills.
Check my basic deck(first comment) maybe you will beat him!
C'Thun priest worked well for me with this one, in terms of having cheap removals (Shadow Words) and buffing up C'Thun to deal large amounts of damage at once.
Genius plan by Blizzard. Release missions for free but make the first boss so hard and rng based for f2p players that they will have to buy more packs to defeat it! Genius!
Exactly! I'm stuck on this boss, 57 losses. Tried all decks posted here, I die by round 3 all the time with double Bone Spikes. I give up.
look at all the dust i have to craft all the cards you need.is this suppose to be fun or? you have no chance as a casual player to actually beat this without grinding some dust
I defeated the boss in 2 tries with a slightly modified mill rogue deck (I didn't have preparations and was still able to win). This definitely takes a bit of luck but if you're familiar with mill rogue it's actually quite easy because he keeps filling his hand with the 1/1 skele's and coins from tomb pillager. Also is much easier if he rolls the bones for a full hand lol. I included stubborn gastropod, ironbeak owl, doomsayer, assassinate, and acidic swap ooze to the core of the mill rogue deck and was actually pretty easy and an extremely satisfying win. I'll probably make a deck list later on, I'm on mobile and this website is incredibly laggy
I used a warlock deck with a bunch of random demons and the death knight, with the hope of just bursting him down in one turn. This strategy didn't work, so eventually we were both in fatigue, and I only had 2 6/6 minions and a bone drake. Knowing that I wouldn't have a chance of winning, as we were both in fatigue, and the boss would just hero power every turn before ending his turn, I used my hero power on the bone drake to kill it, and got a Cobalt Scalebane. After a few more turns, I was only 5 off the damage I needed, and the boss just conceded.
