Boss Overview
Sun Raider Phaerix is the second boss in the Temple of Orsis wing of the The League of Explorers adventure.
This fight has a unique mechanic which states the controller of the Rod of the Sun is immune. You're going to have to kill the rod in order to start attacking him. It is assumed you could completely remove the rod from play via silence and then by killing it.
On Heroic difficulty, his hero power, Blessings of the Sun, instead states that only he becomes immune when he controls it, so its no longer possible for you to gain any benefit from it. Additionally, there is a buff called Heroic Mode, which it looks like the Rod itself gets if Phaerix is in control of it which grants in +3/+3.
- Normal: Tol'vir Hoplite
- Heroic: Tol'vir Hoplite
Pro Tips and Strategy
- The Rod when its on his side of the field makes him immune. If you can get it onto your side of the field and silence it, he can't ever go immune again.
- There's a cheese tactic which relies on obtaining the staff on your side, silencing it, and placing a taunt minion up. The AI doesn't know how to react.
- Use the priest deck below, and just win with Shadow Word: Pain, Silence, and Deathlord.

Finally made it with this deck, which is a slightly variation from Zelgraz's deck below.
Good luck!
Won in fatigue, good deck 2nd try :)
I just got extremely lucky and beat him on heroic in 5 turns using a Priest deck. It was pretty much a perfect topdeck draw sequence :D
Turn 1> Nothing End Turn
Enemy> Attacked with Rod dealing 3 damage to me
Turn 2> 1x Shadow Word: Pain - Killed and took control of the Rod
Enemy> Used The Coin and Summoned Tol'vir Hoplite
Turn 3> 2x Power Word: Shield on the Rod making it 0/9 Drew and played 1x Goldshire Footman
Enemy> Summoned another Tol'vir Hoplite and attacked the footman with the first one, killing it
Turn 4> 1x Divine Spirit 1x Inner Fire Attack using the Rod (now 18/18) for 18 Dam
Enemy> Summoned a weapon and attacked the Rod along with 2x Tol'vir Hoplite which both died and dealt 10 damage to each of us.
Turn 5> Attacked using the Rod for another 18 Dam FTW!
Looks like the cheese tactic no longer works. He attacks exactly the same no matter how you do it.
I was doing the warlock class challenge and right before I killed this guy I got disconnected; I did't even know that could happen against bosses.
Thank you for this - I kept trying the gimmick deck but never got the right draws. After 20+ tries I gave up and this worked on the 2nd try. Lesson learned - screw gimmicks.
One thing to add, Djinni of Zephyrs really shines in a priest buff deck. Also light wells and power word glory(which also works for the Djinni), easily overwhelms the guys damage output.
Use the standard Divine Spirit + Inner fire combo. Works for most cases.

I had the rod return to my hand and ended the game easily with rogue
Pretty sure the bug has been fixed now, so the exploit deck isn't relevant any more. :)
Another strat that I used to deal with the staff on heroic is to steal it (either by killing it or by using a card like Shadow Madness) and then bounce it into your hand via a Panda (Youthful Brewmaster is likely best cause it's cheap). The AI will never replace it and you never have to worry about it again. Makes the rest of the fight SUPER easy.
Doomsayer make the staff disappear.
Beat him first try with secret pally
In Heroic mode, just Silence the staff in the beginning.
As with Zinaar, the Goblin Blastmage plusFlamewaker deck works very well against Phaerix.
I changed the staff into a sheep and played game as regular, pretty easy.
In case you didn't notice, he has 4 legs 0.0
