So far two maps were announced: Direct Strike (A premium version of Desert Strike, an already existing map) and ARK Star, a new map commissioned by Blizzard that is paid only. So right off the bat, we’ve already hit the wall that was hit when paid mods originally were tried with Skyrim: A mod that was originally free getting a paid version for no reason, and a new mod that is only paid, like the Skyrim Fishing mod. They aren’t cheap either. When mods were monetized like this it fractured the mod community bad, as several modders stopped making free mods and went to make paid ones, and those who made mods out of the goodness of their heart were left cheated, same with the players.
How can Activision Blizzard do this to their fans again?! They’ve already ran Starcraft 2 into the ground by spliting the game into three games each costing $60, on top of adding paid campaign DLC with the Nova Covert Ops, then adding a microtransaction store for things like announcer packs, THEN adding cosmetic loot boxes, and now this. A feature that has been free for 9 years with content that was made with passion and not for monetary gain, now has content locked behind a paywall.
If you want a game to be alive and stay alive you need DLCs or something like this.
It's additional content you don't have to buy. As long as the main content for the initial game is good enough to be a full priced game, everything is fine.
You don't run an online game which makes no profit or at least only has a small deficit. And games never grew in price since gaming is mainstream, it was even far more expensive in the 90s. That minus inflation....voila
Greetings, a developer
EDIT: The gaming community became greedy bitches, not Blizzard ;) You just have to know basic market economy to understand this. But I will probably be flamed again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
A paywall is very controversial isn't it? Is it right to expect content for free from a "run for profit" company forever? I don't think so. I don't know where I sit on this. The core experience is free and I'd have more complaint over the lack of internal currency for StarCraft 2 that allows you to get this for free over time.
I haven't played SC2, so would you say that these maps are essential? Are Blizzard monetizing a necessary component or is this optional?

Did you already miss the part where the game is $60, has campaign DLC, on top of a microtransaction store AND cosmetic loot boxes? They already have so many ways to monetize this, so why paid mods?

Extra credits is a youtube channel I think is quite well run and they have a series about this from earlier this year, including inflation, monetization models and the whole Star Wars issue. If you can spare an hour, they make some sound arguments, as far as my knowledge as Business Administrator and Consultant goes (never worked anywhere near the gaming or entretainement industry, tough).
Blizzard should make a special stream lessons or youtube videos in which they explain the the only way hs should be played is with supa dupa 1000 IQ control/combo homebrewed decks and 30 minutes long match is a minimum time period that proves you're not braindead blah blah something etc.

It is completely free to play the arcade currently (And the base game i think now?) Them providing an improved (? remains to be seen) service for a premium for that area of the game isn't much of a stretch.
If they're not making previously free content paid content, then why does it matter? Just don't buy the premium arcade stuff.
Actually they are making previously free content paid content. Direct Strike is literally Desert Strike, a previously free mod. The premium version is gonna have exclusive cosmetics and modes that only those who paid can play.

You’re literally using the same excuses Bethesda shills used when Creation Club was announced.
Who actually cares though, its just extra content. The game just went f2p anyway, so they have to earn money somehow.
Except for the fact the game isn’t free to play. Wings of Liberty is free to play, but the other campaigns are still paid. There is also a DLC campaign with the Nova Covert Ops, a microtransaction store, AND cosmetic loot boxes!
And WHO CARES?! IT’S PAID FUCKING MODS! If people accept this, it’ll become the norm. People accepted Overwatch’s cancerous loot boxes, and now others are copying the system. People accepted Overwatch timelocking new gamemodes and PvE to events, and now others are copying that. If people accept Premium Arcade, then paid mods will start to become the norm even after we fought against them.
you do undrstand that there is nothing worng with the conept of paid mods we are talking about teams that create exstra content that want to be paid for there work and considaring pepole barley donate to moderes this is the best way they can earn that money the reason creation club is a mess is because the sold mods are at best skins that already exsist but if the content is actully worthwhile I dont see a problem if you want an exsample of a paid mod going well look at sonic mania

Sorry to tell you but Blizzard is a greedy bitch

Golden Hero Collections thus far; -
Europe: Druid, Hunter, Paladin, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior (9/9)
Americas: Druid, Mage, Paladin Shaman (4/9)
Everywhere else: Workin on it.. (0/9)
Tbh its all fairgame imo. Starcraft arcade is free to play as it stands at the moment. If you dont like it, dont buy it. Simples.

Why is this on Hearthpwn?
The man, the myth, the Legend.
(wait, I've only gotten rank 2, not legend)

Unpopular opinion: Rogue is OP
Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.

If you don't think a thing is worth paying for, don't buy it. It really is that simple.
