Would it be more beneficial to do Arena than to open packs? Would it be wise to spend 5,000 gold in Arena once the expansion hits? A mixture of packs and Arena? Just packs? How many wins is acceptable in Arena? Thoughts on this subject?
It depends on your skills in arena, but maybe at the beginning it's better to wait a bit before playing in arena, we don't know yet the impact of the new cards in it, maybe you can open 4k gold of packs and keep 1k gold for arena. You can see pro players like kripp for the first week and then start some arena run.... In arena with 7 wins you take back what have you spent just with gold, so already 4-5 wins are a little deal (it's like having a pack for 60 gold to make an example)
BTW, if you play ranked too some packs are necessary, having them just from arena costs you a lot of time!!! with direct packs you can have from the beginning some new cards
That really depends on what your average arena run record is. If you're averaging below 4-5 wins a run you'd probably be better opening the packs. 5 wins is the guaranteed "profit" point for gold investment versus reward. You're guaranteed a pack and at least 60+ gold worth of additional prizes, which would put you net 10+ gold ahead. 7+ wins is guaranteed run-back gold (i.e. a pack + 150+ gold).
Then would it be better to get gold or dust from Arena? If you get 8 wins would you want the extra gold or dust? The gold can help you do another run but the dust can help you craft more cards you want, even though the packs can give you 40 dust. You can also earn cards and those can count towards dust since you may not need or want the card.
If you average 4+ wins it's better to do Arena, but it'll obviously take a lot more time. Also keep in mind that there will be people in Arena with decks from pre-expanion/rotation that will potentially ruin your day if you try to play too soon after the release.
I would spend most of the gold on straight up packs. It would take far too long to use up 5k gold, unless you're an unreal human bean who plays several runs each day (like kripp).

hahahah its called not HAVING A JOB.....have at it! no better time spent than grinding 100 bucks worth of cards a month. Get a job and buy them. You can enjoy the game then and not have to waste your days for what amounts to garbage. Entertainment is entertainment...either you spend it on cards or go eat for $100 who cares. The people that cant spend money on things will always hate those who can. If you are on disability or have nothing better to do then arena all day man....

So you are telling me that you draft a deck a win 5 games you net 10 gold. so lets say it takes an hour to win 5 games to make it simple so you make 10g an hour.....wow. If your time is worth 10g an hour you have serious problems and maybe shouldn't be playing this game.
You can only do one arena run at a time. If it were me, I would do 4400 in packs and use 600 for Arena runs. This gives a decent opportunity to pay for the next run (7 wins) while keeping a rolling balance to account for some less than stellar runs.

I'm planning to start doing the arena a bit more serious (i.e. never buy a pack again), are the drop rates in draft increased for the new expansion for some time?

Well, that's certainly not what I'm saying. Presumably ANY of the games of Hearthstone you're playing are for the joy of the game itself. Arena is a different style of play than constructed. If you're playing Hearthstone JUST for gold, why play Hearthstone at all as gold only serves to help you play more? I was merely answering the question as to whether it's worth it to spend the gold on arena versus opening packs from the shop, and I think having an understanding of the realized gold cost/value of an arena run is the only way to help answer that.
In other words, it sounds like you're suggesting that if, say, an hour of arena you earned 10,000 gold, it might be worth it but my argument is no amount of gold is worth it if you don't enjoy playing Hearthstone to begin with.
