With all the expansions that just came out now. I was just imagining, if it was my first time to play this game, I had to go through many expansions before I can really effectively win in rank.
That's why I'd like to throw a monkey wrench to Blizzard and to us players (especially F2P players), is this really still FREE TO PLAY or PAY TO WIN? What do you think?
Technically it is STILL a f2p game. Everything can be earned through grinding. However people opt to cash just to make their life easier and enjoy the game even more. You have to understand the concept of Free 2 Play
I know actually, but can you honestly say that you're playing HEARTHSTONE just for the sake of playing, or for winning? If you're here to just play, cmon, play another game. It's a waste of your time.
It's free to play if you don't suck. All sorts of budget decks these days can get you to legend. The reason to pay out would be if a certain deck with a higher dust cost looked like fun to play.
Blizzard has made it quite clear this expansion, regarding the direction of HS. No free packs for F2Ps, no free arena run, packs promo given to those who are paying only (preorder), best card of the set (Varian) further cements the number 1 status of Control Warrior on ladder.
Clear as day that Blizzard intend to put as much distance between F2P and players who spend money. Personally i think they are trying to make the situation so bad for F2P players that one might start to consider dropping some bucks for more packs.

Funny cause the concept of pay 2 win is the same thing. A Games that let you buy better gear or allow you to make better items then everyone who don't paid at a faster rate is pay2win
I think You are confused by the concept of free to play and pay to win.
Free to play means you have to pay nothing to have access to hearthstone. This is the case with hearthstone.
Pay to win means there is content that is exclusively available by paying real world currency that is necessary to be competitive. The only thing in Hearthstone that is exclusively for real money is Character portraits, which provide no advantage.
That being said, hearthstone definitely has advantages for long time players and players who pay for packs. But since packs are available with in game currency, it is well within the realm of possibility to be competitive without dropping a cent on the game.
So in the end, hearthstone is a free to play game with a business model based around a "catch up" system that allows new players to skip needing to have played since beta to be right up to date for a little bit of cash.

This is more or less the case in Hearthstone. First, the initial free "gear" is much more competitive in Hearthstone than in most other games/CCGs. With a basic deck with some commons you could easily get to rank ~15 if you are good, and Firebat got to rank 4 with f2p deck. Fireball is a common and it is one of the strongest cards in the game, Yeti and Sen'jin are very slightly inferior than the best 4 drops in the game, and they could be played in tournament level. Same can be said for many basic cards.
It is completely different then, for example, pokemon TCG that you start with a crappy pokemon that causes 20 dmg with 2 energy and when you go play you see the opponent with some ridiculously op lvl. N pokemon causing 100 dmg with same energy. Or like most MMORPG where if you don't buy stuff you are always behind and unable to compete.
Another point is that you get a chance to obtain at a minimum 140 gold per day, plus 1 pack per week. Not including other hidden quests and such. So in just 1 year a person can amass 511k gold MINIMUM which would pay for both adventures and another 504 packs plus the 52 free from brawls (assuming those continue) that's 556 packs plus two full adventures. So over the course of a year, F2p players have the opportunity to get at least 27861 cards. F2p is more than feasable its just more work than paying 60 bucks for 50 packs every few months.

That's good math. But it would really be sad for the first timer to wait for a year just to experience a great win against someone who has every card needed. :)

Have a great deck that's really, really cheap? Help the new players out

You'r whining about waiting for an update. That cute, let's talk about half life 3

What does "win" even mean in this context? Genuine question I honestly don't know.

free to play means money doesnt affect your performance in the game > League oL
if you think hearthstone is free to play you are naive and a fanboy
and this catching up system of your is for new players to buy two expansions straight of the bat and this is only enough for till rank 15
if he doesnt want to spend money this ftp player will have to invest 3 months of gameplay JUST to get the adventures
I guess it's free to play, but pay to win "consistently".

isn't it a little bit of both?

It's play-to-win...
Used to be a proud Handlock player.
Legend 17 times.
Still flirting with the ladder from times to times with Renolock.
You can play for free but you are more likely to win if you pay for cards.
Angry Chicken
Its free to pay!
Yeah go face hunters :)
