I too had a really hard time getting started; even now, the "Practise" AI curbstomps me most games against it because it simply seems to have a counter to everything I bring out, and most "Casual" games I play the same thing happens.
Usually it *seems* to me to be that I just get utterly horrid draw (nothing usable until at least turn 5 or 6, anyone? :D) but this is quite likely more a comment on my poorly-constructed Shaman deck: Not enough low-cost starting minions (I don't have many available to me that I really like) for the payoff of some mid-game combos and late-game stomping; this relies on my opponent not flooding the field with low-cost, buffable stuff. When it works, it works well; when it fails... It's embarassing. My mana curve is maxed on 4-cost, for instance, while I have no 0's, two 1's, three 2's, etc, and I haven't even unlocked all the Basic cards for the Shaman yet due to mostly getting stomped and not getting the EXP to get to Level 10!
You might be in a similar situation to me - you may just need to play some more, watch a heap of YouTube streams, and if you're having a bad run, quit for the night and have another stab the next day with a clear head and a desire for vengeance. I've been watching TotalBiscuit's "Lord of the Arena" series, and a lot of my current combos (which, with a better-constructed deck, I feel could be AMAZING) have come from watching that series and thinking "Well in that situation, I would have...", then getting similar situations in my games, testing my theory, and stomping around like a +10 / +10 Puss In Spiked Boots.
Oh, and maybe not rely *too* much on "Tier lists" and the constructed decks of others - Half the fun is experimenting and coming up with something that your opponents don't expect / can't react to easily.
TL;DR: Don't let the losses get to you (there will always be losses!); with experience and experiment come many stomps on your enemies' faces.
I am rank 10 with 4 legendaries without spending any money and without playing ladder very much. It takes a lot of time, but if you can average 7-10 wins in arena, you never run out of gold and have an unlimited stream of packs.
@OP I guess that only shows that you can't simply "buy" your way into a high rank. It's not simply a matter of how much you spent on the game.
Also, 4 days against people farming for 3-4 months, DAILY (sometimes for 10+ hours, doing mostly arena and getting cards and dust left and right). What exactly did you expect? To spend 200 dollars and magically "get all cards" and own everyone in ranked? (some people with a lot more experience in card games than you?). You're clueless of your own situation...
New players are going to come in, hit the card wall, and be face with 3 options.
p2w
quit
slowly grind forever
The ones who p2w, will continually keep hitting the card wall again and again, and be faced with the same options. Eventually, most will get sick of it and quit, but Blizzard keeps the $.
It's like a scam! They are pissing on us without even the courtesy of calling it rain!
I'm a new player... (in the sense that I only started playing one or two months ago, because I wasn't sure if there was going to be another wipe, when I found out, I started playing again).
I don't have even all the common cards, probably not 10% of all Rares, 0 epics, and maybe 1 or 2 Legendaries (weaker ones, like Antonidas and Onyxia).
Explain to me again how I can only have fun if I'm "placing high in a Ranked mode" (that still has no rewards) or only by "winning" (whatever the hell that means for someone like you)? Please, do explain.
If a new player is not having fun, and the only way they can have fun is by having a "fair" competitive game from the start (which, mind you, NO TCG/CCGwill ever be), I have some bad news for these players. Either way, stop judging everyone as if they're all like the tryhard morons who can only have fun in a game if they're "winning" (again, whatever that means in today's games), instead of actually having some legitimately good time.
I've had my ups and downs with this game for awhile now. I will really enjoy it one week and then totally hate it the next. There is alot of RNG involved in how the game plays, and playing well can only help so much against better draws, better cards, or total RNG madness cards like Knife Juggler , Nat Pagle , or Mad Bomber .
Now I 'm not the highest ranked player ever, but I've played just one deck, for about 50 games and got to rank 12 before I couldn't seem to catch win steaks and stopped playing to go back to Arena'ing. Here's the deck
Now this deck isn't super expensive, but it does have a fair amount of commons and a few rares. You could replace any of the rares if you really had to. Spellbreaker could replace Keeper of the Grove, Gnomish Inventor or Cult Master could replace Nourish, and Acidic Swamp Ooze could replace Knife Juggler. You could also change out some of the commons in the deck for a whole spell power package. I'm not saying this deck is totally amazing. But its a cheap deck that can win games, especially in basic play mode.
I'm not sure why you directed this to me, nothing has shown me that you can't just buy your way into winning games, because that's exactly what you can do in this game, at that point all you need to do is buy, buy, buy, buy until you have 2x each card in the game, visit hearthstone fansites and construct decks and win win win, with maybe a few losses. As per my original post, the issue I am having is simply that I don't have enough of the cards, however in my defense I've only spent 32.00 dollars, and finally played Arena last night where I went 2/3 which I don't think was too bad for my first real shot at it, but that again forced me to use money. I'm not quitting HS just yet, going to give it some time and try to learn better strategies, watch more streaming in both Arena, and Constructed. I won't be playing RANKED constructed, and have yet to even try that until I have all the cards I need for top tier decks, and at that point I will try to use my own head to come up with better decks to try to have the element of surprise when playing a mirrored image, who knows.
The OP has a very good point and shows a very weak point in HS match making.
New players (no cards - no experience) ... who are losing too much will quit the game rather fast.
Every time you make the same mistake. The MMR in casual mode ensures that this doesn't happen.
New players clearly shouldn't expect to get very far in ranked mode; but casual mode is perfectly ok for them. They may still get a few wins or losses in a row - but that happens to the people in the top ranks with a tonne of legendaries too. That's just the random nature of the game.
finally played Arena last night where I went 2/3 which I don't think was too bad for my first real shot at it, but that again forced me to use money.
Not too bad for your first arena. But the thing I don't understand is why you had to pay - the first arena match is supposed to be free!
Also, if you've done a few dailies you should have enough gold to pay for at least one arena (although I suppose you may have spent that gold on decks, of course).
my advice to you is to play arena. I played a good 2-3 weeks in arena alone, then I started playing constructed. tbh I still think arena is a better experience overall (more fun , more gold, etc) btw right now im ranked 8 and I didnt spend any money at all.
Tried posting this at the actual Blizzard forum for Hearthstone, but I get this message
You need a BattleTag and a trial game license or a full... a trial game license or a full license to post on the official Hearthstone forums
Okay, let me first start out by saying I think I've purchased about 40 dollars worth of cards from this game so far, and only started 4 days or so ago. With that said, all of the decks that everyone are playing after you reach level 10-20 seem to be filled with really hard cards to achieve in the game, and it used to be that I could play a deck (basic high rated deck from hearthpwn or hearthhead) and win 40 coins for quests, and then maybe 20 or 30 per day for 3 wins in a row, but now I can't win one game meaning I'm not getting coins for quests and I'm not getting coins for winning 3 in a row, thus I am at a stalemate in being able to win matches until I cough up more dough to Blizzard.
Can anyone please please explain to me why this is so? I was really loving this game, and I don't mind spending money, but OMG how much money do I have to spend regularly to be able to play this game and have fun anymore? I'm not rich, and I have a feeling this game is going to lose a lot of players with lesser bank account balances.
It's possible I'm missing something. So far I've gotten all the basic cards from every hero, and have a few legendary, rares, etc. I don't have all the cards needed for any popular deck that everyone is playing. I watch streams on twitch and ustream on how to control the board, and manage your cards, and make them work with others in a deck and yet still I never win anymore.
Just some information about me, and I'd appreciate any advise. I really do like this game, but no game is worth 40.00 per month to play, sorry.
I'm very frustrated at this point.
This right here is why this game is going to fail!
It's so p2w, it's very unfriendly to casuals. They are going to be faced with shit they can't deal with, and have no choice but to quit.
I am very tired of hearing how this game is pay to win. It is in so such a pay to win game. The definition of a pay to win game is when you must spend RLC(Real life Cash) to get something and that is the only way to get it. This game is pay to accelerate meaning you can spends months accumulation coins and doing arenas for gold, or you can spend money and buy the packs to help you accelerate this process. please stop lableing games P2W until you are sure it is one. Thanks!
Hey guys, just an update. I tried the Druid Spell Power (http://www.hearthhead.com/deck=9757/druid-spellpower) and won 3 games in a row, and got my 40GP, my 10GP and I even won 300 more GP for having won 100 games in Hearthstone (seems I've been playing a lot in the last couple of days)
In fairness, I don't think he was expecting to be competitive in ranked play. He just wanted to be able to do his dailies.
I suspect what happened is that he won enough games in casual to increase his MMR so that he ended up losing a few games in a row before it fell back down to a more reasonable level.
finally played Arena last night where I went 2/3 which I don't think was too bad for my first real shot at it, but that again forced me to use money.
Not too bad for your first arena. But the thing I don't understand is why you had to pay - the first arena match is supposed to be free!
Also, if you've done a few dailies you should have enough gold to pay for at least one arena (although I suppose you may have spent that gold on decks, of course).
The first arena run is always free of charge, no gold needed so I guess he had some arena runs before that "didn´t count"
I mentioned earlier on that I screwed up and played the Arena once on my first day having no idea what it was, so yes this time I paid 2 bucks.
In fairness, I don't think he was expecting to be competitive in ranked play. He just wanted to be able to do his dailies.
I suspect what happened is that he won enough games in casual to increase his MMR so that he ended up losing a few games in a row before it fell back down to a more reasonable level.
That's exactly what happened. Once I gained 10's of levels in non-ranked play I began to lose non stop. I believe it was from 8am - 3pm ET non stop until I finally won a match using a Druid Spell Power deck, and then I won a few more, and then I tried my first 'legit' game of Arena where I went 2/3, and got a little extra, plus 300G for 100 something or other, lol.
I love the game, and I love strategy and I know some people want to say "this guy has only been playing the game for 4 days and wants to be competitive!", well hell ya I do, it's not like I'm jumping into Ranked which I wouldn't last in yet, but I sure as hell would like to play the game and have fun winning at least a few matches every hour or two, not play from 8-3 and notice a repetitive play from all mages, all paladins, etc, using the same cards, strategies, etc. My concern is still a valid one for this game, the cards are difficult to get to compete in even general play, and when you don't have them you can't build decks capable of winning so you are put into this 'cycle' of sure losses until you eventually come across someone newer like yourself where you have an opportunity, but if that can take up to 6-8 hours to come across well then there is something seriously wrong with the MMR algorithm that Blizzard has in place.
Maybe that algorithm needs to consider the mana curve, the rarity of cards, and the players level and win/loss ratio - however being a programmer myself I can tell you that would not be the easiest algorithm to write as a programmer, especially with the ever changing environment with card meta changing and new cards coming into the game, and old ones potentially leaving, etc. I would assume there would need to be a guestimate based on card type and hero you're playing in order for it to have any real significance. I'm not quite sure what their MMR is considering right now to determine its values. Regardless, maybe Blizzard needs to offer a free Arena match daily, A free pack of cards weekly, or something to help players who are having a hard time winning get cards. Not only that but I think it needs an export option to share libraries of cards with other players in or out of game and maybe some 'deck' tutorials built in the game, your average player may not know to look online at great sites like hearthpwn.com - Just a few things, but it is beta so I can't complain too much yet!
I am only putting money into 2.00 arena battles every so often for a while and see how it goes. The more I play the more I understand how each class plays and what I can do to combat it, but it doesn't work out 80-85% of the time! But hey! At least I can play music and rock out, right? :)
Believe what? I didn't say anything that needed to be believed in, it was all factual.
Yes, you said "They are going to be faced with shit they can't deal with, and have no choice but to quit."
But if you play in casual and lose a few times, your MMR will drop until you are facing players who you have around a 50% chance of beating (unless you really are one of the worst players in the bottom 1% of course).
So what you said is factually incorrect, because you completely ignored the effect of the MMR on who you get matched with in casual.
Actually, because of the win streak bonus, you are always higher than you should be based on chance.
Blizzard has invited over a million to closed beta, but there weren't even close to that # playing. Guess why? People kept quitting! This game isn't about the long haul, it's about getting new players in, and making them feel obligated to spend $ to advance! After awhile they catch on though, but not before dumping near full retail, $60, on a game worth about $10.
f2p is a misnomer, and generally a scam with very few exceptions, like LoL!
I expected more from blizzard though, it's too bad.
How do you explain people in legendary without spending a dime? There was a guy streaming it a while back.
Oh that's right you don't know what you are talking about.
No one listen to this scrub. Get good at arena/drafting and u will be MORE than fine.
