In the last 3 seasons i went in wild to legend, rank 4 and now climbing at rank 3 with:
Odd Pala (legend)
Spell Mage (rank 4)
Zoolock (currently 3)
In standard i went also with a zoolock and Zuljin/Vereesa Hunter to rank 5.
Yeah...i probably rather should stick to one format:)
What made the differencr for me to previous seasons where i didnt get that far?
1. Not switching decks
Usually i switched all maybe 5-10 games because i get bored or wanted try new cards/classes. I never believed it, but it actually takes some time to learn a deck and its not just about bad luck topdecking in the long run.
2. Focus on the game
Most of the time i played infront of the TV or alt/tabbed all the time.
3. Know what your opponentbis playing and adapt your game.
I'm getting to rank5 day one each month, but this season I've started on rank7 and I'm still stuck on rank7 no matter what decks I'm using. HALP ME TOO.
If you are a beginner and struggle to reach rank 5, you have to play easy decks first to learn when to trade, to go face, to manage resources, etc. The easiest tier 1/tier 2 deck for beginners right now are bomb warrior, token druid and bomb hunter. Don't bother to try to add or remove any cards, you will decrease the winrate of the deck, play the meta version.
You have to stick with one deck and learn how to play it. Don't just give up if you lose 10 games in a row. These decks are 53% winrate decks, the best 5 decks of the meta so it's not the fault of the deck if you are losing, keep trying. You will need more than a hundred games with the deck to really master it. Analyse each of your move, even if you misplay, knowing that you made one is already a great achievement, you'll be angry at yourself but you won't do the same mistake in the next game.
Watch some streamers, Misplaytv on youtube is a great pedagogue.
Like the others said, if you can reach rank 6 you can easily reach rank 5.

Stick to one deck. Refine it ( wich usually means; don’t make it all too greedy). Only include Tech cards if they are absolutely needed. Get your winning streak.
With this i can even get to Legend with non meta decks. But it obviously takes time.

The highest i have ever been was rank 6, any deck suggestions to get me over the hump and to rank 5, either wild or standard?
maybe this
Just git gud.
Play more games. You'll probably get to rank 5 if you just put in the time.

There are so many decks atm in both standard and wild to go with
Standard options are Tempo Rogue, Mech Hunter, Control Warrior, Token Druid, Summoner Mage.
As Cokrok said stick with one or two decks and play only those two. You are already 6. Its a matter of some time to get that 5. You can do it
This. If you can hit rank 6, you can hit rank 5. You can do it.
I'm getting to rank5 day one each month, but this season I've started on rank7 and I'm still stuck on rank7 no matter what decks I'm using. HALP ME TOO.
I got past 5 i wild with Kingsbane rouge this season. It's a decent deck against big priest or control warlock.
Wild Mech Hunter is also great to reach rank 5, getting legend with it isnt that easy, but for rank 5 its very cheap, around 3000 dust or so.
Hitting rank 5 doesn't depend on what deck u play. I have personally hit r5 with Whizbang

To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffer!
All it takes is time and a winrate over 50%
The question you need to ask yourself is: Which meta deck are you happiest to beat?
Choose a deck that counters that one, and you'll get there eventually.
