Blizzard has a plan to over-time nerf all the good classic/basic cards. They cant get rid of all the classics cards and introduce some new core set or theyd have to either not give dust(not a good idea) or give dust(not a good idea)
Lets just go with blizzards plan to slowly make the classic/core set a set of cards that no one will ever play. If i was running Hearthstone I would also go with this plan. Nerfing all of classic/basic cards is the most profitable and will upset the least amount of players.
This will effectively reduce the number of viable cards, so with each new set we will see more movement in the meta. It may not be the best way to run this game but it is the simplest and most profitable way.
I have a feeling that most people support the 'core set' idea only because they think that it somehow means that Blizz would give away a lot of cards for free. Cards that other people paid for. That's not going to happen, get over it and enjoy the game for what it is. Or move on.
As I said in other threads, if Blizzard wants to slowly nerf or HoF all the classic and basic cards, then just pull the band-aid off already and get rid of it. They are going to make it so new players have no choice BUT to buy the new expansions to have fun or a chance at winning a game.
I would like a rotating Core (or whatever you want to call it) set. It's an easy fix. The team decides at the beginning of a new rotation (April), to remove some cards from the Classic and Basic set and move them to Wild. Then take some cards from Wild and put them into the Core set.
As far as new players or F2P, I actually support the new player or F2P experience because not only does it maintain the player base, but it keeps Blizzard and this game in business if these players eventually become paying customers. F2P players will spend money if they enjoy the game and they feel there isn't this arbitrary pay wall stopping them.
The Pay wall happens when you nerf basic or classic cards and then offer 'alternatives' in the newest expansion that are clearly more powerful.
The rotating Standard Classic/Basic set will not punish these players because when they open new packs, they will now be opening cards from the 'NEW' Standard pool. Will this be alot of work? I imagine so, but that's why you do it once a year at the start of the new season of Standard.
This is not about getting free stuff either, its about ruining cards that have been in the game for 5 years and claiming they are unhealthy for the game. If Blizzard wants people to play with Shrink Ray instead of Equality, don't nerf Equality, simply move it to Wild. The new player still has the card and didnt actually lose anything as they have it in Wild.
It's a very simple concept in psychology. You have the carrot or the stick. You can beat people into submission by threatening pain with the stick. Or you can offer them something rewarding by following the carrot. Positive or Negative reinforcement.
You know how you get F2P players to play with your new cards and buy new packs? Simple, create quests that encourage you to use the newer cards to finish those quests. For example, a Quest that says, Play 20 Rastakhan cards, get 50 gold. What this does is use the carrot. hey, you want that 50 gold, then you need to play with newer cards.
Instead, Blizzard is using the stick in the form of nerfing basic and classic cards. Blizzard is saying we dont want you to use these very powerful cards because you arent paying for new packs. So we are going to take away your old toys and force you to play with new toys. This is ignorant and not very good for long term growth of the game.
The carrot in a rotating Standard Core set (basic and classic cards) means that players will have to buy packs of Classic in order to get any missing cards. But you are not forcing them to do so.
It's a very simple model. Provide incentives to people and they will do whats best for their desires and they feel like they made a choice. (marketing uses this tactic alot) But if you threaten punishment for NOT doing something, your good results are temporary and cannot sustain itself.
You tell me what you would rather be told:
1. If you play with the new cards, you get 50 gold. (Carrot)
OR
2. If you don't play with the new cards, we are going to nerf all the old cards you are playing with. (Stick)
Blizzard, make a rotating Core set. You can dictate the direction of your Standard as well as providing answers to deck archetypes that can be problematic without creating new cards. New sets should not have 'tech' cards that tries to solve problems from previous sets because you made a design error. Use the new expansion to actually explore a new game mechanic and go with it.
I really liked the idea of these Shrines in Rastakhan. How many decks are actually playing with them in top tier decks? Do you know why? Blizzard did not explore the archetype enough. There is not enough support and some of the Shrines are basically garbage.
How many cards in Rastakhan are being used in the current Meta? What percentage? Whose fault is that? The players? No, its the design team. People play with Equality because its a strong card that no other card can replicate. Give players a GOOD alternative to Equality.
So the choices for Blizzard are easy. Get rid of the Classic/Basic cards altogether and move them to Wild and be done with it. No more balance issues. No more people playing with older cards. Your new sets will be played more often.
Or create an opportunity to shape the future of Standard and the game by having a rotating card set and explore the older cards in the new Standard.
