i am a seasoned (since beta) warrior (p. much only) player. I always played control war archetipe and left in mid 2015. I loved that deck so much (thaurissan boom grom alex varyan and many more, not mentioning the grim patron list....what a time ) and i was really good at playing it. In the last period before i left i could easily hit 8-ish rank playing from phone.
Fast forward 3 years and vicious syndicate says that warrior isn't played anymore. Indexing warrior decks on here returns a real desolation. I had to change race since control warrior always was expensive so it was not an option to build one (i don't even like new concept...) and i bought some 100 packs and built a zoolock with heal package and an hooktusk rogue. With both i did literal crap couldn't hit rank 12 in the first month of my comeback (november 18) and stuck at 13 for this month. Can you give me some advice on how to improve my skill? resources are so outdated that are the same i was looking at 3 years ago.
I noticed that people are now generally aware about concepts like mana management efficent trade curve and so on; i also noticed that everyone now has a fat collection even at low 20 rank you see full build decks with 5-6 legendaries. what's happening? am i out of curve or the new expansion gives me a shot? is the level of players increased over time (i would have said the opposite: the wider the audience the lower the skill level...)? What happened to my beloved war? Will rastakhan help my race to rise again in pure control? like remove everything that touches the board and then drop legendaries until your opponent concede? Don't tell me stuff like hunterstone and such because hunter always was cancer and will always be. Have you ever played wow? Hunter is cancer. You shouldn't even be friend with hunter players irl. it's a known thing between seasoned blizzard players. :)
I really need some angel to chime in and update me on the game since i feel really out of it... very thank you
I did pretty much the same, I left the game after Naxx and came back this year during Witchwood. In the old days I was a Zoo and Druid player (I hit Legend once with these two decks then) and on my return I started with Zoo again (it was the cheaper option since I had to craft just Keleseth).
After struggling for a few months I finally hit Legend again on November and the same I did this month.
From my experience till Rastakhan Zoo was still an option to rank up, now not really, in fact I crafted a new deck to help me being more consistent in some match during the climb (you can check it in my decks, I called it Midrange).
Going back to your post, I don’t think it’s about the deck or class you play, but more about not knowing all the cards and strategies of your opponents. After being away for years you probably have lots to learn before shining again.
Can’t say much about the Warrior, never played it, but lately against Zoo it used to be OP.
Warrior struggles a little because it is impossible to outvalue your opponents most of the time (which was core to the archetype). You either get infinite value nowadays or can't compete, also there are very strong otk decks that don't rely on 30 damage, like old freeze Mage, which warrior prayed upon.
Ironically the warrior DK is the only one that gives you 0 value, and Dr boom is fun but it's a little unreliable.
Basically you either:
Face rexxar, and deathstalker rexxar grinds all your removal and overwhelms you
Face Jaina, and she out values you with infinite elementals
Face Gul Dan, and he blows up your deck
Face one of the current combo decks and lose pretty much against any iteration because you can't apply pressure.
Odd warrior was good last expansion because odd rogue was very prevalent in the meta, now people are experimenting with dragon warrior (which seems pretty fun but haven't tested it).
On the bright side once rotation hits warrior keeps supercolliders, and all the DKs and most combo decks die out, so you can start again playing a classic value game (unless they add some bullshit) on which warrior would thrive.
Lower ranks are a lot tougher than 3 years ago, to be honest I think everyrank is harder than it was years ago. I think a big part of why lower ranks are harder is because of the rising popularity of streamer and website such as hearthpwn where newbies can get info on how and what to play. I remember when I started just after Black rock launched I tried to make my own stuff for a 2 months and was stuck at rank 19, after that I watched a few youtube videos and got some deck ideas from online and I hit rank 10 almost immediately after that.
Thank you for the rundown. Just what i was looking for :D I will try the dragon warrior also, even though i am quite skeptical on its "fun". i Can see it being really frustrating on the rng side
With less Togwaggle and Taunt Druid, less Kingsbane and no Shudderwock (all of which were close to unwinnable for Warrior, especially Odd) it might become one of the best classes in the next few weeks.
Warrior right now is probably the second best class with Paladin, after hunter. Quest Odd Warrior is probably tier 1.
Completely false lol
???
HSReplays is tracking Odd Q Warrior near the top of Tier 1, about half-a-percent behind the top deck, Even Shaman. Odd Warrior, without the Q, is near the bottom of Tier 1.
Warrior doesn't have value issues. If that was the issue, warrior would run 2x Dead Man's Hand which literally gives infinite value. The dragon synergy cards released this expansion are also high value. The real problem with control warrior is that value decks are inherently bad in the meta because of the large amounts of viable OTK decks. Most other control decks combat this issue by having disruption effects like Demonic Project or some proactive way of killing the opponent themselves. Some odd warriors run Fire Plume's Heart for this purpose and you could give it a try but IMO it's not very good (nor fun)
Furthermore, control warrior has an abysmal winrate vs hunters, which is the undisputed tier 1 class after the druid and paladin nerf recently. Combo decks that warrior also suffers against like the 2 types of OTK paladin and various OTK priests are also becoming popular because they are good options vs hunter
QED: I would not recommend warrior for serious laddering. If you are struggling to ladder, I suggest you stick to zoo. It's relatively easy to pilot yet extremely powerful. It also traditionally counters hunters, which are spamming the ladder right now. You'll only run into trouble if you match into people who are also trying to counter hunter, as most of those decks will also counter yours in the crossfire. Luckily, this should only be an issue at much higher ranks
If you're craving "real control" gameplay, which by that I assume you're referring to attrition decks, I suggest you play control warlock. It's the only real attrition deck left in the meta because warlock is the only class with disruption tools to deal with OTK decks
As for player skill, you've got the logic right, but applied backwards ;) The average player skill is increasing because the audience is becoming smaller, not wider. The playerbase is in fact slowly shrinking. Perhaps the casual population is quitting over time but there are not enough newbies coming in to replace them, leaving behind the trihards to crowd the ladder. Of course, this is only a theory but it's a known fact that rank 20 today is much harder than rank 20 3 years ago. Blizzard has acknowledged the issue and tried to fix it by adding 25 more ranks on ladder, not that it helped much

In wild warrior is still quite strong, pirate warrior isn't too expensive and it's quite strong

Um what? Warrior is currently fine. Odd warrior is a control warrior archetype and the most played type of warrior. You can also play dragon warrior
The rank where is most played is between 14 and 10 with an astonishing percentage of 1,77%. dragon warrior doesn't even make up 1% in any rank.

I think you are right at least in part. Will def try your list! thanks for sharing :D
