I honestly don't see any reason for emotes to be in Hearthstone than for people to be assholes. I'm very easily butthurt when someone is emote taunting me and if i forget to squelch my opponent it usually ends up with me being pissed off and losing game to stupidest of reasons. Why can't we have option to mute them?
They are in the game so overly sensitive whiners can get upset.
Including an auto squelch feature would be an implicit admission that emotes are an unpleasant form of interaction, plus Blizz is slow to include these sorts of quality of life improvements that don't impact the game.
And OP if an opponent emoting puts you on tilt, that shit's on you, not Blizzard. Work on your mindset.
I personally love emotes. I'm the guy who always greets my opponent on the first turn, "well plays" an impressive turn, and "wows" when the RNG gives you the same gold legendary in a row. We are social creatures and the game wouldn't feel online without them. Like mentioned before from Brode; it adds to the sensation of playing an actual player and not a bot.
Also if you are a fan of Warcraft lore, it is fantastic to see your favorite characters come to life! It adds depth to the styling of the game. Is it necessary for a card game? Nope. But all the "unnecessary" polish is what makes this game a work of art and a labor of love. I'm a sound designer, and let me tell you, Hearthstone has some of the best design around. Each emote feels unique to the character, and the voice actors Blizzard works with are top-notch. Not to mention the scoring and audio queues from the cards have become iconic! Think about how the entire game's levels drop when you move your cursor over to play log on the left. It adds so much to the effect of stepping aside to check the records, and matches perfectly with the background greying out.
So much thought goes into all these emotes, however simple the may seem on the surface. They even think about you, the guy who hates emotes. They gave you a damn option to squelch your opponent! They know they have different demographics and niches within their audience, and they try very hard to cater to all of us.

Can we play a few games against each other? I promise I'll be nice to you.
I sometimes use them to bait/provoke my opponent so that they get baited into trying to kill me so they forget about aoe or removal or whatever. I mean it obviously is rare when it works but it's worth the try.

Honestly, I get pissed when my opponent use them, but then I win a game and start emoting myself. We're people, we suck.

Maybe try this. GREET EVERYONE OPPONENT AT THE START.

Maybe it will be easier for you to remember to squelch your opponent. Works for me at least.
My apologies

I still don't get how people are overwhelmed to squelch their opponents if they hate the emotes.
I would love a chat for the salt. Even though I would be banned probably sometimes, too. Lovely salt ^.^
Hello !

To taunt butthurt people like you.
Because it's fun!
