Recently, my girlfriend got into Hearthstone which was probably inevitable seeing how into it I've been for quite long. She started playing with her girlfriends, practicing and whatnot. I made a couple of decks for her (as she did not really want to play in my account so early on as I already have everything and she thinks she'd be missing half the fun collecting, oh if she only knew). I helped her through the initial tutorial and then I helped her grasp some of the main mechanics etc.
After a couple of days, she, you know, ranked up a little bit to like rank 23-22 and I would help her make some plays from time to time. Anyway, she decided to move to casual for a couple of weeks to really understand the different archetypes, level up a couple of heroes etc.
I can't help but feel so bad when I watch her play, wanting to have genuine fun, instead encountering non-stop tier 1-2 decks in casual. When that happens I immediately try to help her because those never legend plebs are bming on top of it all and we do steal some games with her basic decks, but I feel really bad and depressed when I see that.
What the hell? Why do people feel the need to justify their losses in ranked by playing casual, with tier 1 decks? This is retarded. Btw, this is the experience everyone has when they start out. This is just NOT right and I don't care what anyone says. We're talking about people who want to have fun and learn the game, and this is what they get? Point me to the salt thread all you want, but I'm just trying to raise some awareness here. This is someone I love, and yes, it is just a game, but it so happens to be my favorite and main game. This is just sad.
Sadly, this isn't a game for having fun (Because of people), the places for fun are rank 20-18, 15, 10, 5 and lower legend, these are the ranks that you can have more fun than others, casual can be really hard for newer players....
Don't pet her play casual or if you do commandeer her account and concede 20 straight games that should lower the hidden mmr enough for her to be matched with players that equally abysmal collections.
She'll have more fun next season when the new ranked changes come into play and the players who are better or have larger collections naturally rise to the top.

Casual is utterly abysmal right now. I've introduced some friends to the game and they've had similar experiences.
I am hoping that the new ranked changes will be enough that Casual will truly be casual, and the majority of players will be playing Ranked at a level they are suited to.
It could possibly spawn some "micro-metas". Where the top decks of 25-15 will look a lot different to 5-1.
We'll have to see. There are douche bags in every game that take pleasure in playing opponents far below their level. Low self-esteem does this to people.

I had a similar experience getting my son started, who is 9 1/2 and whip smart. I gave him two of his own accounts (so he could level it up and get Morgl, still hasn't happened and it's been 8-9 months). By now, we both have decent collections, both starting with Un"Goro, though he loses badly on Ranked every season, he kicks butt in Casual. Even for me, Ranked is frustrating and demands too much time to climb even 3-4 ranks below 20 each season. Of course, we both started with netdecking, but now I prefer to try brewing my own esp. with a better Standard collection than when we first started.
IMHO Netdecking for your gf is just one good way she will learn (esp. if she can craft some of the key legendaries/epics in her favorite classes), but much better off to start with the solo adventures and the K&C dungeons to learn the interactions, the synergies, and the value multipliers.
I used to do casual for completing quests but found ranked to be much easier. I now only do casual when I'm trying out stupid new decks I've made. I assume most people play it in order to get quests done, and legend and high (low?) ranked players would need to play casual to not lose ranks with less than optimal decks. It's an unfortunate state of affairs.

Wow! I actually never thought of that. Will try it! Thanks!
Getting your collection started is a real pain in the ass, there isn't another game where grinding is this painful and yields so little results. 30 wins for a card pack? Ugh. Many of the quests will be impossibly annoying. You need to pump some cash into that game, or have angelic patience for a very long time if you weren't "lucky" enough to start playing it back when Basic Cards decks could hit legend and grinded since then.
Yeah, I did try telling her it's going to be a grind if she does not use my account where she can play ANYTHING, but nope. She did open Alex and a couple of other legendaries like the pally weapon. So there's that.
Not surprising, the new player experience is awful. Anyone starting out in hearthstone are going to get farmed in casual or pleb ranks by players using tier 1-2 decks. Unless you spend real money in order to get the cards you need, the grind is painful and the quests are absolutely brutal for new players. I know sometimes the response to this problem I have seen on this forum is "Git Gud" but this is a legitimate problem for the game.
Hearthstone is a popular game played by many people around the world. But if the devs choose to ignore how bad the new player experience is, this is something that could end up biting them in the backside in the future.
I do feel that the new player experience is a big problem and that it should be better. However, the only three general directions that could be taken to make the initial experience can more or less only be taken in three directions; the amount of time your account has been in existence since creating it (leading to keeping you against players of accounts that are only so many weeks old for example), keeping your queued matchmaking games to be pit against players who have played/won below a certain number of wins/games, or restricting your opponents to only be against players who have a certain percentage of the total collection or less (for whichever format you are playing in).
All of the above three general directions all have their own flaws and loopholes that could still not fully 'protect' new players in their initial play experience, but I don't see how the early game experience can be manipulated in any other way that makes sense and doesn't cheapen the game.
Eventually though new players will have to have their protected bubble broken and eventually be exposed to all of the bming, super aggressive decks, super greedy control decks with all of the answers, sometimes demoralizing rng, etc. If players never experience that early on and then suddenly cross the thresholds where they have to no longer be considered new players (getting slammed by all of the problems suddenly) then don't they stand almost the same chance at quiting the game anyway?

The f2p experience isn't really something to "miss out on". You should really ask her if she's having fun right now with it. If she is, that's great but otherwise, it's not too late to start learning with a complete collection
I was in the same boat starting out except I took up the offer to play on an established account. I got tons of practice with every archetype and got familiar with the game there. I had "my own" account for practicing arena without spending gold on the "main". The only constructed I played on it was for clearing quests but eventually, I had some pretty good f2p decks lined up and wanted to try out "the f2p experience". It went fairly well and I reached legend a few months later ... but fast forward to today, I kind of regret going in on my own account since I we have to upkeep two collections now
I wouldn't wish this game on any of my friends. Blizzard needs to address either the cost or content of classic packs asap, or the new player experience will remain completely broken. The whales won't be around forever.

blizzard wonders why they can't get new players into the game anymore, well this is why. lol, the new player experience is terrible.
Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.

People playing tier 1 decks in casual and even casual wild need to neck themselves. "Deck testing" isn't an excuse

Mmm
What about the MMR? I thought people would get matched with others with similar win-rates in casual.
