With Lone Champion being revealed, I thought about the different defensive 3-drops available to us in standard. If we ignore less than ideal choices like Tauren Warrior, we end up with these:
I find it interesting that all of these were introduced in the Year of the Mammoth. Some, like Crypt Lord or Tar Creeper are better at protecting other aggressive minions, while Stonehill Defender is unique in the way it generates value. Leaving class-specific cards out of it, I think the best two cards of this little lot are Tar Creeper and Lone Champion, but I'm not sure which one is better. I created a poll here to gather your thoughts. It is also available on twitter and you can check it out here: https://twitter.com/FlyingDingoHS/status/933358835888246786
In my opinion, Lone Champion might win its spot in control decks. Even if the effect is not guaranteed, the divine shield gets better as the game goes on, and 2 Attack is much better than 1 when attacking. What are your thoughts on this?
Stonehill is value no matter what turn you play it.
Well, yeah, but it also is very lackluster when defending against a Zoolock or Aggro Druid. I'd take it in control matchups, but I think the other two are better suited when you don't know your opponent's deck and need defensive tools.
comparing Stonehill Defender, Lone Champion, and Tar Creeper is comparing apples and oranges since they fit certain decks better. Tempo rogue (esp. elemental tempo) will likely play Tar Creeper over Lone Champion, as they generally don't want an empty board. Control decks will likely favor Lone Champion, as they don't rely on board control (priest, for instance). Stonehill, on the other hand, is always valuable and decks like Evolve shaman, will likely run that over the other two.
Okay, but in a control deck choosing between the 3 is not so easy. Stonehill Defender gives you more value, Tar Creeper consistency. However, Lone Champion attacks better and the divine shield raises in value as the game goes on. I think there is a lot of personal preference when choosing between them in a control or slower deck, even if you aren't playing any 2-drops consistently.
Im not sure if I like lone champion in every deck. Many control decks play 1 and 2 drops and you dont want to be forced to kill those off with bad trades. I personally see it most in Jade Druid or Control Paladin

Control Paladin wants to Hero Power on 2 though...

The class wich Control Paladin struggles the most is Priest . Even TarCreeper is better vs Priest cause the can only SWPain him . SWHorror and more notable Potion of Madness make almost every other 3 drop superior.
Seems like a decent card overall that can't be played in zoo. Could potentially see some sort of play in warrior but we'll see! :3
