Just to be strictly honest, my saved amount was maybe a couple hundred gold (more than one hundred, less than a thousand), as for the perfect time to save up, if the past is correct and expansions come out every 3 months or so, I would say maybe mid October, as something may come out near holiday 2017.
baasically you start saving right after you bought all you can. I am mostmy FTP (I never buy solo packs, and only bought one expansion pre order) and I have almost all legendaries I want. Came into KFT with 7000g, still have 2500 and I have like 6-7 DKs and few more legends, I had 14k dust. I also dust wild non golden cards

I started a week ago. I already have all the useful kft legendaries and 4000 dust. I even made an alternate account just for playing arena (it is my favourite game mode) and started saving on my real account

That's a lot of playing going on man. But why two accounts? Why not play arena on your original? I only ask because I may do it if it's a viable thing.
I have two accounts (regions). Each one alternates/staggers which expansion it "mains". So for this expansion, the one account had almost 15k to burn. That gives plenty of current cards and enough dust to craft the last expansion's cards still in the meta. Next expansion, the other region will do the same and become my main for a while.

Because I average like 5-6 wins on arena. It is proffitable (better than buying packs) but I am not an infinite arena player. I want to save gold to buy more packs and if I play arena everyday it will take years. I don't play arena for the rewards anymore, I already have all I need
started one week ago, too. Already at 2k gold again after I wasted around 8k on knights. The grinding will kick in in October for me after my finals, so I predict to be at around 6-8k again by early December.
Save all the time and plan ahead into future expansions so that you'll roughly the same amount of gold when each one hits. For me my target is to have around 15K gold at each launch. Sounds a lot but I don't spend it all at once, after around 120 packs you hit diminishing returns and it's probably better to craft what's missing and save the remainder for the next xpac.

I had 8,400 gold for KFT, it is my second expansion and I only started playing a month and a half before Ungoro. I bought the pre release of both expansions and I have most of the KFT cards. I started saving a week after the KFT release when I hit the pity timer and had most of the cards I wanted from the expansion. I now have 2,700 gold and will not spend it until the next expansion because of the success I had with KFT in getting the majority of the cards. I like Arena, but like constructed and ranked mode more.
So guys, when is the best time to start saving gold for a new expansion? And what is the largest amount of gold you saved pre expansion?
I found that F2Pwise 6k is a good amount to have. After that most of your packs are dust packs while you hope for epics/legendaries that you SHOULD be crafting instead of gambling. Helps A LOT if you are decent in arena.
As to when to start saving to hit 6k...honestly, 7 days ago. You typically start saving 1 month after the last expansion to be sure to hit 6k gold. *
(this is assuming veyr casual play: complete quests, that's it. If you are big on winning a lot of games and, thus, getting a good big of extra gold via the 3-win quest then you get to be more lax: 2 days per extra 100gold earned)
I started saving for Knights of The Frozen Throne as soon as it was announced, and it worked out well for me. I bought about 18 packs in addition to the preorder packs, and got most of the important cards from the expansion on launch day.
I've considered saving for the next expansion since I already have a good Jade Druid deck, but I'm waiting to see how the new balance patch affects things. Plus, there are a few other cards I'm looking to craft to round out my collection. Specficially, Tirion Fordring, so I can finally put together some good Paladin decks, and possibly The Lich King, because he is so versatile.
Start saving for the next expansion once you have all of the cards you want from prior sets, and you've max'd out your pity timers. I keep a notepad file that tells me if I just got a legendary in an expansion, so right now I have no reason to open Old Gods, Meme Streets, or Ungoro packs. Classic is a crapshoot since we get a free pack every week, so I won't rush it. I'll eventually get Yseraor Harrison Jones. It also depends on what decks you want to play, if you have enough cards for a few fun ones just stick with them!

I started saving a week or so ago, when i dropped my last KFT legendary.
If you are near pity timer, it's wise to buy more packs. Otherwise you're wasting your timer on a good card (or some heap of dust).
Otherwise, if you dropped an orange just a few packs ago, just start saving right away.
Tnx for your responses guys. Im going to start saving in a few days from now. ;)

If you are in your first year of playing please read this post.
Dust does not burn a hole in the jar. Be careful what you craft, especially before and right after a rotation.
One does not simply walk into Mordor,
unless they want to be the best they can be.
I think the time is right now. Started a few days ago, I have about 500 gold.
