I could get to legend if I wanted to, but I literally never play a standard meta deck, I will be like, this netdeck looks cool, but screw the consitency I like dumb combos. maybe freeze mage would be the only meta deck I have played when it was meta. I often play fringe decks and I will play like 5 to 10 games of good decks to learn what they are about basically to help inform my play against them, but I have reached rank five using my terrible decks, if you can reach rank five with a terrible deck without doing insane grinding then you are probably good at hearthstone, if you can reach legend with a terrible deck you are absolutely good at hearthstone and if you can reach top 10 legend at all you are good at hearthstone.
rank 13 is about where you start encountering people who don't suck and have reasonably full collections on a consistent basis, but the average player does not reach that point because they either suck or don't have the cards. often both. sucking is not bad thought because we all had to learn at some point.

Just fill your deck with one drops, that is creative deck design, right?
I can relate to that. The path less traveled tends to be more scenic anyhow if you ask me.

I hit rank 5 for the first time ever yesterday, before that rank 6 was my max. In arena I average about 5-7 wins with MSoG. It often goes beyond 7,good warlock and priest decks that got me to 10 + wins. I'd consider myself decent at best.
I dont really believe rank should determine your skill as its very easy to fall or climb in the current system and as already mentioned... bots can climb to rank 5 with ease...
I believe to consider yourself a "good" hearthstone player is about using what you have. Let me elaborate.
Even if you have the cards to perform a sick combo right away, its about waiting for the right time, the right moment, to counter the enemy when he is about to play his biggest cards...
Or even if you are in a bad spot with a bad draw or a bad situation with few minions on the board you should know how to manage them effectively to minimise damage dealt to you.. now some might just call this "luck of the draw" but again.. its about using whatever card you have been drawn effectively.
Its like in any card game for that matter... for example Poker... you may not be dealt the best hand... but you gotta know how to use it.
And sure, i don't consider myself good yet even in arena, it's just a path i have to use if i ever want to catch up with my collection, and so far it's proven itself extremely beneficial for me.
There's currently some imbalance in arena in the form of warlock absolutely stomping other classes.
I guess my point was that arena unlike ladder puts players on even ground when it comes to deck collection. You take what you get and try get as far as possible.
But in ladder you can be a good player and lack the cards, and you can be a horrible bot and play a fool proof deck.
Reconsidering, rank 2 and above i respect, anything below is more or less pointless to put a skill label on
The topic is a little interesting because most people have different opinions on how to be considered 'good'
However there is one myth I want to trash: If you can reach rank 5 but have never reached legendary, then you cannot claim it it solemnly because you don't want to grind because most rank 5 players will never be able to reach legendary because they do not have the skills.
Given infinite time it will be possible, perhaps easy, but given a month, it will not be easy.
Rank is not 100% a measure of being a good player, i've had quite a lot of skillful opponents at lower ranks as well as opponents at rank 2-5 who make a lot of mistakes.
Generally the more or less competitive game begins at rank 5, so its safe to assume that most players are "good" there.
Well it depends on how much you play hs. If you play whole day 5 days a week and you are still rank 13 than you are either bad player either you have really bad decks. But if you are playing like 1-2 hours a day than you are potentially good because you just need time to get to rank 5 and then maybe legend.
And sadly in this meta stupid aggro warrior (not talking about dragon aggro) can get to legend easily and you don't even have to play whole the time so I quess even 7-year old boy can get to legend right now.
From my point of view, rank has nothing to do with skillset. There are people who with the same deck, can rank higher than other depending on mistakes and missplays.A good player on the one hand can understand and examine his mistakes while a bad one doesnt recognize them and just goes by "never lucky".Another thing to consider is ofcourse time. And above all,is arena. Not just averaging above 6 wins, but have the ability to draft good decks.Ofcourse luck is a big thing to consider too.If you know what to craft but still get bad draft choises there's nothing you can do.
I've seen some of the worst plays in my life that made want to puke in high legend ranks. The game is about grind. It's a blizzards policy to always exist a deck that can carry even the worst of noobs to legend if they play enough. For example the worst play i recall was by secret paladin at 400 legend(i was 700 something, before standard).I had a 7/5 dr boom and he had a almost a full board.Instead of clearing my minion he wen full face leaving me at 7 hp as a handlock..He was punished my a shadowflame +double molten giant and sunfury.I would swear he was a bot if only he wasn't trying to add me afterwards.
Anyway skill in this game is hard to evaluate and ranks doesn't mean much to me.There are great players that don't bother to grind and there are horrible players at legend ranks because they grind with the easiest deck possible.
I experienced the same issue but then I see pros doing the same mistakes. It can happen to everybody because of distraction or unawereness. I usually cook, skype or read newspaper during playing and I do lots of misplays because of it. But it doesnt matter at all

I would say 10 makes you competent, while 5 makes you determined. Legend is just the extreme of rank 5

All valid points of course

Question everything.
If you hit legend at least once I think you can consider yourself a good player .
The rank doesnt say much, arena average or tournament statistics say much more about a players skill.
None. This game requires very little skill and mostly playing on curve / being lucky / having the perfect netdeck for the matchup.
Player's actions rarely count for anything concrete.
The topic is a little interesting because most people have different opinions on how to be considered 'good'

So to sum up:
Rank 15 -> 5 is grind
Rank 5 -> Legendary is a skill game

20. I'm sure I'll get there someday mark my words !
Rank actually does not matter.... You think someone who hit legend with pirate warrior is better than rank 10 control shaman? LoL
actually i want to see you how you did legend with pirate warrior :D
