I am disappointed in the Hearthstone community. The community seems so full of angst and anger after every match where a person loses. 90% of friend request sent my way are full of profanity and vitriol. Often times when I finish a really close match I send my opponent a friend request to genuinely wish them luck and say good game. 90% of the time these requests are ignored because people assume that it will be an angry rant. Also, I always say well played to an opponent win or lose and many times when I win people take it as BM and fire something back or in a nasty friend request rant. Maybe it is the old hockey player in me that believes in lining up and shaking hands at the end of a match but I think something needs to be done to improve the sportsmanship. I just have no idea what it is. Ideas?
Sports are a competition; not everyone needs to feel good about themselves in a lop-sided game.
Sportsmanship is a lesson for kids who don’t know any better yet. We should be allowed to do whatever we like as long as it falls into the rules of the game.

When I looked up "Ninjas" in Thesaurus.com, it said "Ninja's can't be found" Well played Ninjas, well played.
Tbh I think emotes should just be removed, or at least have an auto-squelch option. No one ever actually means it when they say 'Well Played' and 'Thank You' these days. It's just bm and it's really annoying.
You are totally wrong. There is a lot of people that emotes me "Well Played" when they realise I have lethal or when I win (although, this happens more frequently in arena than ladder), and I'm pretty sure it doesn't only happen to me. How do you explain this?
It would be nice to have a feature similar to that of DotA where people you've previously muted are automatically muted(i.e. squelched) on every following encounter.

I absolutely mean it when I tell myself "Well Played" after a nifty board clear or some such thing and when I turn around and tell myself "Thank you" right afterwords I mean that too.

I honestly have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but I've been playing since Closed Beta, and in all that time have only gotten two post-match friend requests - and neither of them were abusive.
personally it takes too much time to go through a friend request, which could be filled with profanity and vitriol, just to say good game. usually ill say well played after the lethal damage in a close game, cause sometimes it seems sarcastic when u do it in a blowout, or if you spam it..

I'm not sure if allowing people to actually type to their opponent would help or be worse. Of course it would have to come with a squelch button.

I have to disagree with this entirely.
OP is exaggerating... From my point of view, I see Hearthstone community like these:
