I just hit rank 12 and I struggle to go further because like 70% of the enemies are playing with one annoying mage deck - mana wyrms, secrets, many spells, alexstraza and medivh.
The only chance for me to win is to hit enemy hero (that's what's called face I believe) and kill him asap, but it's hard because he always have those annoying ice blocks and then they use alexstraza to get hp back and I have no cards then, coz all my minions were dead by mage spells and shit.
I want to create a deck to counter them but I don't know what deck it should be, could you guys help me? I don't have much dust to spend on it, so I'd like it to be a budget deck.
Eater of secrets are obvious, but then? Mages can kill many low hp minions with flame strike/blizzard, they can destroy buffed minions with fireball/meteor/sheep spells...
Think of a control style priest I guess. Make sure that you run weapon removal, water of secrets, dirty rat (for Alex/Medivh) and a card like binding heal in case your opponent uses Alex offensively.
Control Paladin. Very one-sided match up. I rarely lose to any mage deck, be it freeze, burn or secret. It can't keep up after you remove their threats and when they are forced to use their spells on minion removal. If they go for face, you can easily heal up and can even remove Alex on the same turn.
Eye for an Eye from Hydrologist also allows you to play around Ice Block quite easily. Obviously, keep it in hand until they are at 1 hp.
If you specifically want to counter Mage, consider Eater of Secrets or Forbidden Healing. You can also remove the Hungry Crab for another Beast (e.g. 2nd Kodo) or Mistress of Mixtures or any of the Oozes - it'll devalue your Curator slightly tho.
Look for cards that generate extra resources and will trade for more than 1 for 1. If u cant kill mage fast enough, then u need to outvalue and outsustain him.
U could also try face/aggro/midrange hunter with Flares ;-)
C'Thun Warrior can armor you out of burn range. Even if they reduce your health to 15, they will struggle to put a dent in. Make sure you run weapon removal and play more of a control style. Armorsmiths, Shield Block, Eater of Secrets, Shield Slam.

True. But that one will have more bad matchups than Midrange Hunter, sadly. @OP: If you really meet A LOT of mages, then you could give it a shot, since it will win you a lot in no time.
Otherwise, the aforementioned Priest and Paladin variants are a safe bet.
I'd say go with an aggressive/midrange Hunter deck and a Flare or two. After popping their counterspell it should be enough to kill them. Eater of Secrets is just a very underwhelming card to use with poor base stats and a dead minion in case your opponent does not run secrets. At least Flare costs half his cost and draws you a card in case your opponent does not run secrets.
Jade druid is the best. Its rock vs scissors matchup. They cant keep up with removing jades but they mostly can keep with removing your beasts if you play hunter. Also flare dont work on counterspell, so if they play counterspell + iceblock, icblock remains. You can try to play arround ofc.
Oh guys, I didn't expect so many answers, thank you!
I will check the decks you guys recommend, but I think they're all very expensive, just like Zukuu's deck - it costs me 9500 dust to create it and I got only 7k dust over all these years lol (I'm more of a casual player tbh).
@GutsHS - I have a midrange hunter deck that made me climb up from 17 to 12, but they I kept losing big time. Actually what I said in first post was my midrange hunter/rage warrior experiences - I managed to get mage to very low (1-5) hp, but then the mage always uses ice blocks (and sometimes Alex~) and I have no cards and almost nothing on the board by then, because I lose everything due to flamestrike/blizzard/meteor/sheep/etc.
And I just found more decks that I need to counter. I played many games today and I actually encounter mostly 4 same decks over and over - Secret/Burst Mage, Pirate Warrior and Jade Druid/Shaman and sometimes Murloc/Token Shaman.
Is there any chance of making a deck that would do well against at least 2 of those 4 decks?
Mage throws many spells (aoe or direct), Pirate buffs his minions and Jade summons tons of jade golems and get many minions with getting much armor. These are three really different decks so I don't think it's smart to create three countere decks, because you never know who you'll fight in next game. In this case I'd like to create one deck that'd have a chance of fighting against these three decks. It doesn't have to be OP deck (if there were one everyone would have played it) but I believe there can be a decent deck that would deal with these three most played decks. I'd love to climb to 5 or at least 10th rank.
Yoi say that midrange counters control deck but how come? I usually used to play aggro/midrange decks and I got crushed by any type of decks, mostly by midrange/control because they just kept clearing my board with all those aoe spells or buffed op minions and it always came down to situation when I had no cards in late turns and enemies had at least 3-5 cards to play.
Big (ramp) druid is your best bet against both jades and mage. Unfortunately it's one of the most expensive decks. Pirate warrior is slightly unfavored but you can win with a good ramp start and teching golakka.
Alternatively there's probably a priest list that's reasonable against all three. Something like a combo priest that runs priest of the feast.
Diamond - I used budget versions of midrange hunter, rage warrior and secret mage. They are kinda early/mid decks. And it usually came down to situation when I had few minions on the board (buffed or not) and enemies used some spells like flamestrike/blizzard/aoe potions/aoe misions (such as dragon that deals 2dmg)/single control spells and I was like dead. Or they used some good minions with high hp and taunt and I had to trade to destroy them. Usuallyin 6th-7th turn I had like only 1-2 or no cards at all on my hand and all my board was destroyed while enemy had half/low hp and several cards to use.
Well I always liked to play mage because of many damage, Tempo Mage/Burst mage was my favourite, but it doesn't require skills and I would like to craft a deck that isn't a "noob deck" or "one type" deck such as aggro deck or control deck but is versatile and works in every stage of the game.
I think it should be a "combo" deck, it should have like 20 minions in vary mana type and 10 helpful spells/abilities that would rather control the board than deal face damage. I think that'd be a decent deck. I remember having a nice mage deck few years ago - it was similar to the "classic mage" deck - it had ogre mages (+1 to arcane missiles/explosion and they could survive priests word spells or frostbolts), water elementals (high hp for cheap mana cost) - that's what I'm kinda looking for. Medium mana cost minions with higher hp than attack to survive enemy spells and win trades. But I'm not sure if that build would be good, because new cards are much stronger than classic cards.
my mistake - it shouldn't be a 'combo' in meaning of things like OTK, coz it's imo too random to work out. As combo I meant that the deck would be a mix of early/mid/late cards.
So, if I understand your deck idea, you're searching for Value-heavy Midrange ditching most synergy for raw card power...
When we have the Frost festival now, I'd advise checking Arena. Might sound radical, but deck like you described are actually some of the best in Arena. In Constructed, however, they fall short to synergy-based decks of slightly lower raw card quality, but making sure all the cards help each other - such as Secret Mage, who is basically this in a synergy-heavy packet.
Yeah, I think you described it really well! I think such deck would be good in overall, but as you say - there are decks based on new strong cards that base on synerging, buffing each other and that's what creates a powerful deck. And my "wannabe decent deck" wouldn't have any chances with that powerful deck, because sadly it's all about buffs and other tricks last years. I tried Zoolock yesterday and it was really bad... Thats why I dislike idea of having 3-4 expansions every year - they have to make more and more powerful cards and old playstyles have no chances against them.
We don't know much about the next expansion but I think those new cards will be really powerful and I think it's smart to safe dust for them. But on the other hard - they will be really specific - will the lifesteal cards be useful in next expansions or will they be useful only for lich king expansion?
As for the arena - it's weird, because I've played like 3 or 4 arenas this week, I used to create versalite decks and I never won more than 1 game... Maybe I had bad luck in cards and enemies or maybe I just can't craft a good deck :(
Play Midrange Hunter with pirate crabs, murloc crabs and one eater of secrets.
Yeah, I kinda modified my previous midrange hunter deck (which was losing against all decks I mentioned in the first post) and added those cards you mentioned. Added a flare against secret mages, will see if it works.
----
DiamondDM13 thank you very much, I will take a look at it! Just two questions:
1.I don't have Pyro nor Elise and I'm not sure if I want to craft them. Any replacemenents? 2. Shouldn't this deck had at least one Flamestrike/Blizzard spell?
Yeah, I kinda modified my previous midrange hunter deck (which was losing against all decks I mentioned in the first post) and added those cards you mentioned. Added a flare against secret mages, will see if it works.
Keep in mind Flare is not good against Counterspell, so consider teching in an eater or if you are on the coin save to proc counterpsell 1st. good luck to you.
Thanks Diamond <3 I will think about it, I don't have Antonidas either lol. I think I will destroy all golden cards and get some dust. Maybe I will even destroy some old legendary cards that aren't useful anymore, but tbh I like collecting cards.
About that "heavy midrange deck" - I met a priest with similar deck to this and I think it may be a good one. It has many nice minions with much hp (which can win trades or survive some enemy spells), some nice control spells and some buffs. Unfortunately I don't have 6 purple and 2 legendary cards from this deck :( But it's just an example of what I am looking for.
i was stuck at 12 this season mainly playing murlocadin and secret mage...used pirate warrior to break through the wall of clumsy_priest.dec, annoying_mage.dec, and net.dec
only one person added me to complain after i beat his annoying_mage_quest.dec while he was on rank 10 floor

So you thought only Mage had an exodia combo eh
Seems that when I tech in Eater etc. 2 counter Mage I see very few of them, odd how that happens...

@DiamondDM13 Imo Secret Mage and Jade Shaman are Midrange/Late decks in which case I think I should play a midrange deck. All these control/late decks are too expensive for me, I can't afford all those legendaries.
What midrange deck is good and provides me stable amount of cards on the hand? Paladin/Druid/Mage seems to be the best.
Swap out two cards and add an Eater of Secrets or Flare (If you play hunter) and a card that deals with weapons, like Harrison Jones, Acidic Ooze or Gluttonous Ooze. Tech in a silence card too, for unexpected taunts. Good luck!!
