Hello everybody! This topic is for discussion of Week #23 of our Weekly Card Design Competition. One of the awesome things about this competition is that it gets us all talking about what makes a card balanced, fun, realistic, interesting, unique, innovative, exciting, and more. However, to make sure that everything runs smoothly, we need to reserve the Submission Topic for submissions only. Everything else goes here. What is everything else, you might ask?
Rules or Process. Do you have a question about the competition's process? Do you need clarification about one of this week's entry requirements? Are you not sure whether your entry adhered to the rules? Ask here!
Feedback or Ideas. Do you have some ideas you'd like to run by others before settling on one? Do you need help balancing or wording your card? Do you need help finding art that will fit your card? Or do you just want feedback from the community on your entry? You're in the right place! Remember, although you are allowed to make minor tweaks to your entry after you've submitted it, you're only allowed one submission per week, so make sure that you've settled on your card for sure beforehand.
Discussion! Do you have thoughts on other people's cards? Are there directions you don't like that you're seeing too many people take? Or directions you'd like to see more people take? Would you like to help others and contribute to a greater community understanding of Hearthstone card design and balance? This is where you want to be!
Poll. As you may have noticed, we have a poll in this thread. We have gotten complaints about so called "troll entries" which some people think ruins the fun. So, it's time to settle this: should we, the mods, be able to disqualify troll entries? If the no-side beats the yes-side I, DialM4Murloc, expect everyone to stop complaining and just enjoy the competition :)
WARNING:
Please refrain from the following...
Advertising Your Card. This is a new rule during Season 2. Please don't pop in here just to advertise your card only to never be heard from again. This includes only asking short, generic, or insincere questions like "Thoughts?" or "Do you think this is balanced?". Yes, getting feedback on your card is one of the purposes of this topic, but we're not just here for other people to help you. We're here for you all to help each other.
12 hours after this competition begins, there should be plenty of other posts here for you to give specific feedback or for you to comment on a trend. If you post your card for feedback after this time and do not also offer some form of substantial commentary, critique, or praise of others' work, you may find your post deleted.
Plagiarism. Many people post their ideas here before finalizing them in the submission topic. Directly plagiarizing those ideas to post in the submission topic yourself is absolutely not acceptable.
So, without further ado, have fun and get creating!
Some feedback on the following things would be nice :3
The poll
The new qualifying system
The new rule
This week's topic
Thanks in advance, people ^^
in the case of troll picks: Meh, I don't really care that much. I only recall face hunter making it to the finals, as every other troll post hasn't done that great (unless you count fantastic four from the old minions week.) also, some troll picks have been genuinely funny, so I do like seeing them.
Qualifying: I like it. it seems to reward cards that have heavy competition on later pages, which I approve. I'll have to see how it works in practice before I render judgement though.
Image hosting: Thank GOD! I feel that we should have been doing this from the start. good on you.
this week: Yes! I can use my favorite card I've created:
The 'splash' mechanic has always been my favorite mechanic in the game (Foe Reaper 4000 being my favorite card.) I've always wanted to incorporate that effect into a card myself, and this was the result. I especially like this card because of the plays it's mana cost facilitates. turn 3 Hobgoblin into this on turn 4 for a 3/7 with splash is damn strong, and this into turn 5 Demonheart Turns it basically into Foe Reaper 4000 with charge for 5 mana and a discard. also, dat art is my favorite piece.
No offence, but I think you should rethink using that card. It's just Foe Reaper but weaker basically. Maybe base something on that effect but do it differently?
We have an equation that gives point to each eligble entry which is supposed to make things fair, so the final isn't dominated by early posts. However, I think the equation has failed in some aspects, hence the new system for this week. Hopefully that will make things better.
You Orc Like?
fair enough. I'll save it for some future expansion competition or something then. hmmm...
How about this:
Will upload (rebalanced version) tomorrow.
This minion causes totems with effects to be more effective.
Flametongue now gives +4 to adjecent minion.
Healing totem now heals 2 at the end of the turn.
Vitality heals 8 to your hero.
Mana Tide draws 2 cards.
Wrath of air is Spelldamage +2.
Other totems are unaffected.
Thoughts?
Give a man a Murloc, and he'll eat for a day.
Give him a Murloc Knight, and people will hate him.
Wonder why no one thought of this "positional" thing. It sprang right into my mind, since I thought about that conditional placement long before. I'm not sure of the writing is the best in its current form and I'm not sure about the balance. You can play around the card quite easily, by playing a minion to change position. If it has no enemy in front of him, it does nothing, too. What do you think, too strong? Too weak? Initially had it as 4/3, would that be better?
I appreciate any comments and will review back everybody who gives me one. :)
Nah, I think the wording is clear. it is definitely worse than foe reaper, or such variants though. that lack of damage to the 'Target' is actually pretty big.
Question: If our submission is removed from the competition for not complying all the rules, are we allowed to resubmit an entirely different entry that does follow the rules? Or would this fall under the rule of You may not significantly alter your card once it has been submitted. (Although minor tweaks, such as to adjust balance or correct spelling errors, are acceptable.)
Hey guys, I am relatively new to the competition but just wanna say I enjoy it very much. You guys are doing a great job! Just a couple comments and questions here.
1st - I voted yes on the poll, only because I don't think troll votes should be able to win or advance to the final poll. The troll cards can be funny and I think its only necessary to disqualify them because they tend to get a lot of votes. I just think the competition is more interesting and fun without them, but that is just me.
2nd - I like the look of the new rule which allows entries from each page to move on. I don't know much about this subject, but its at least a step in the right direction. The formula alone is confusing for someone who doesn't quite understand just how much votes on later pages were valued compared to earlier pages (like me). This way I have something easier to understand accompanying the formula. Now I won't be so alienated by the process.
3rd - I have a question about the topic this week, specifically regarding what would qualify. I know stuff relating to adjacency, and left most and right most would all work. But what about other things? My specific idea involves a minion that takes up more than one card space on the board (that would be the minion board interaction). Would stuff like that work?
Poll
I voted yes, although it should clearly be a TROLL submissions, like Dr. Broom or Face Hunter. You can be meta, wity, funny AND be interesting and balanced about it. So I hope you will enforce it in the future. Maybe it's enough if you just exclude them from the finals (and ignore them for the page total).
Qualifying
I think everyone and their mother thought it works like that already. Top cards per page go on. I'm all up for it.
Rule
I don't think you need to enforce image hoster uploads. If people don't do it, it's at their own loss. I doubt you guys have time to check each entry anyway. And what if they break the rule, will the entry be deleted? Seems kinda harsh and pointless. You should upload every finalists entry to an imagehoster of your choice anyway for the voting poll.
Theme
I thought about positional cards in the past quite often, in fact the last time when I was scheming for potential cards for the classic set for the Hero contest, so I think it's fine. Initially there will be A LOT "adjacent minions" stuff I bet, but in the next few days, I'm sure people will come up with more unique and interesting ideas.
What's the new rule?
Otherwise I'm fine with the current qualifier progress.
And the pool, well I won't say my vote since it's private but I don't mind.
Seeing the votes so far, I lose more and more faith in the community. :(
Ok, here's a review of all of the cards so far IMO:
@lucalima99: Nice design, well balanced, just be careful because of the current Grim Patron deck, might be abused.
@Darthscion: This card, on paper, looks pretty balanced. The problem I see is the potential in Zoolock or other such decks as it could gain some serious value. This card's versatility is a nice feature but could also be a major downfall since it can be played in almost any situation.
@ThePokeMann: Solid card, balance is pretty good. My only concern would be that, relative to other people's ideas, it might not be considered as 'creative'. But overall, very nice card.
@Firebolts: Very, very nice idea. This would really push the use of Totems.
@Zukuu: Great card design, I don't think it's OP but other people might think it's OP at first glance.
@i3ackero: Very creative card design, good balance, overall solid card.
@nekromanton: I'm a bit unsure as to where exactly it gets it Attack from. Does it gain the Attack of the minion on its right? Maybe reword it to 'Gains Attack equal to the Attack of the minion on the right of this minion' or something like that. You could shorten it if it looks bad on the card though.
Also, here's my submission, Hakkari Sharpshooter. It's an option for Midrange to Control Hunter, encouraging them to at least leave their opponent alive until turn 7. Would appreciate any feedback on it.
Anyway, that's it for now, please get back to me with any questions at all! If you want to upvote my card, click here :D
.
At that mana cost it's like a mini-ragnaros that scales with with attack buffs. I have a feeling it might be too strong with 5/7 stats, since you can't effectively remove it, not even with BGH. The main problem that arises, is that the target is fixed each turn. If your opponent has only 1 minion, it will always attack that target. Even if he sacrifices one by playing two, you can easily just kill the other minion to position it just right.
You can play two, too. I'm not sure, tho - the effect is hard to judge. Might be fine, but I would feel better about it if it would have an attack or health less.
I definitely don't want to disqualify fun, well-thought submissions. I remember one of my favourite submissions, Fantastic Four, which was a silly but balanced submission that really embraced the fun side of HS. If the yes-side becomes the winners, I will definitely make clear that fun submissions are OK, as long as they aren't absurd.
Well, that's for me. Uploading 10+ submissions and then editing them in is time consuming and utterly tedious. Also this will solve the problem with submissions that belong in the final but disappears which happened to one in #22's competition. It's just easier and more secure this way and I can focus my time and energy on more fun and important stuff, like giving feedback in the CCC.
Thanks! ^^ I hope more do, even though they are very quiet :P It's harder being a mod than people might think and i definitely regret that I sometimes whined and was quite harsh at times when I wasn't a mod. This experience has definitely taught me to think from other people's perspective (even though that's easier said than done haha).
Hmmmm...I would say no. It doesn't really depend or interact with the board. Just to be sure I'll forward it to the other mods to see what they think.
I'm really liking this week's theme so far! I've come up with some two cards I really like. Hard to decide which to choose though :P Some nice entries so far aswell. Keep it up, guys! ^^
