It's time to bring back Design Duels. For those who have not seen any of the previous threads, these Design Duels are always a 1v1 design competition between two anonymous players. The two competitors don't even know each other. For those who like to compete in one of these, simply send me a PM and I will set you up for a match. Lately I have been trying to do 2 duels at the same time, one New Comer Design Duel (for those who have not done a design duel before) and a Veteran Design Duel. Anyone entering duels for the first time is automatically a New Comer, but once you've completed your first New Comer match you're bumped into veteran status. If you are interested in joining a duel, just send me a PM and I will add you to the queue. Now for Veteran Design Duel #10:
Since Hearthstone is no longer "Heroes of Warcraft..."
Prompt: Design three different cards from different Blizzard games.
interesting prompt this week. Some interesting cards tho some are less interesting:
This week 2 of the cards seem too simple to me as the design soace had few limitations. Treasure Goblin seems like another version of the Tomb Pilager. And Dark Templar is in my opinion wasting the design space Starcraft cards could have as some characters in starcraft have much more flavour than a 6/3 stealth that seems to belong in the classic set.
The overwatch heroes are the most interesting and flavourfull of the bunch from both entries. Mei seems to carry on her ultimate ability from Overwatch. Maybe it is a bit broken as the opponent needs to waste a removal spell or a weapon or a charge on it but the card has some nice potential. Mercy also seems to carry on her abilities from overwatcb but in my opinion it tries to put too much in one card amd I think maybe something along the lines of "Battlecry: Summon all friendly minions that died this turn" would fit the character more. Also for me the 5 lines of text is a no go. I made that mistake in a duel awhile back and it recieved a rather negative responce.
Nova Terra is by Far my favourite card of the buch if I understand how it works correctly. From what I get it summons 3 minions in random order that appear as 4/1s but only one of. them is real and once you attack with the real one the enemy sees which one is is and can deal with it. Quite an interesting design but maybe a bit too complex for the game.
As for my least favourite card it is the one i didnt talk about yet which is Marked for death. The reason I dislike it is because it is simply an underpowered card I see where the designer was going with it but i think it is poorly balanced. The closest comparison for the hunter class that I can think of is Hunter's Mark As it is a hard removal for hunter which is far more consistent than marked for death.
Overall Im strongly leaning towards #1 but havent decided yet and want to see what others think incase i missed something.
Well this is an interesting prompt. Considering this is a veteran duel a I bit disappointed with the results though. There are wording issues and general text flood issues as well.
Entry 1 starts off decently. When noting the number of minions spawned by a spell or effect you use the written number, so the stats of the minion aren't mistaken when read. Otherwise the card is flavorful but a bit weak in my estimation. Even if you don't kill the right one right away you're not taking a lot of damage and the tokens don't do anything. Card 2 on the other hand crazy powerful. The flavor is good, but man its imbalanced. Its worth noting that if something freezes on your own turn it stays frozen though your next turn as well, so this is effectively double freezing the opponents current board as well as being a 2/4 for 4 mana. If they can't kill Mei or the Drone then things just spiral out of control extremely quickly. The last card is just boring. I think there was potential to let this add a Random Weapon as well as a Coin to your hand and make it even more like a real Treasure Goblin instead of a 3 mana Tomb Pillager. Underpowered, then Overpowered then Boring. Overall I'm not impressed.
Entry 2 starts off insanely weak. I'm just completely confused by this card. Its so utterly miserable and shows what appears to be a total lack of forethought or research into balancing the card. I almost have to expect the creator wanted this to cost 5 mana, and even then it wouldn't be that impressive. I think Stranglethorn Tiger is still leagues better than this and Ravenholdt Assassin even does a better job at 7 mana. Next we have a total disaster of a card. Its horrifically over powered, and its got way more text than it should, including running what I assumed is supposed to be a constantly triggering ability into its absurd Battlecry. The flavor again isn't bad, but the card itself is executed poorly. Card 3 is horribly underpowered. Hunter's Mark does almost everything this does but cheaper, outside of one specific minion, Wrathguard. Also, I think trying to be too much like Diablo and not just letting this double the damage is a mistake. It leads to weird clunky wording. So here we have Underpowered, OPOP, and Underpowered. Again, unimpressive.
I really don't even know if I feel like voting for this one. Maybe someone else will come along and convince me otherwise, but ATM I'm not happy enough with either entry to vote for it.
Nova Terra is not a new concept, but cool nonetheless. Mei-Ling Zhou is cool (hehe), but essentially forces removal, which is probably too punishing against some decks. I really like the flavor of Treasure Goblin. I remember doing one for a WCDC two or three seasons ago, but it's so obscure nobody remembers it probably.
Dark Templar is too simple, as some people have said. I'd prefer not to have more Worgen Greasers. Mercy is not only too text-heavy, it's also overcosted. Just look at N'Zoth, the Corruptor and Ragnaros, Lightlord to see that such an effect is not worth an abysmal 0-attack body. And Marked for Death seems needlessly complicated. Taking double damage would easily be the same flavor.
Although Mercy has the Lightwell effect as a bonus, she has 0 attack, meaning she's no threat on her own.
Conclusion: not overpowered. Just too much text.
Well that was my personal opinion, and considering N'zoth can't summon you a Ragnaros or a Y'shaarj, it's more overpowered. Please don't put words in my mouth, thank you.
Thanks guys! @Sivalt I know you were pate to answer so I assume you had little time to actually make the cards and it really showed. Good luck in the next Duel you participate in. :)

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women.
Ahhhh, too much text on Mercy!
