Every time a new card is revealed with "Spare Part" aspects, discussion about the Spare Part system inevitably rises. For me, it makes me think about what we already have and what the introduction of the Spare Part system itself inevitably means for the future of the game.
You see, the Spare Part system is not a new concept to the game. This idea of certain cards adding to your hand noncollectable cards from a select set already appears in the Expert set. Twice.
That's right, you see where I'm going with this now. Most everyone knows what Ysera is. And everyone should likewise know that these "Dream Cards" are quite similar to the Spare Part cards; the Dream Cards are a set of five, completely noncollectable cards that can only be attained through in-match means. Sound a lot like Spare Parts yet? Much like Clockwork Gnome being a means through which Spare Parts are obtained, Ysera is the only distributor of cards from the Dream Card set.
But maybe not everyone is all that familiar with the second incarnation of this concept already in the game. It's alright, I forgive you. Elite Tauren Chieftain isn't exactly a common card. But the Power Chord cards he gifts both players meet all the criteria described above.
Essentially, with GvG around the corner, there will be not just one but three total "sets" of noncollectable cards available only by the distribution of other cards through effects. As Follows:
Now what are the implications of this? Spare Part cards have an interesting extra aspect; they are going to be a fully implemented game mechanic. The Power Chord and Dream cards, while being quite similar to Spare Parts, exist presently only as a special feature of one specific collectable card each. The Spare Card mechanic can be put on any minion Blizzard likes, allowing multiple different sources for this set.
Considering this, how many more noncollectable sets will we see in the future? Spare Part cards seem to cover most of the basic and simplest ways to apply effects to minions. We could see a plethora of more creative groups of cards for future sets of this type, such as a set of Murloc-specific buff spells. Meanwhile, will the two sets we already have ever be returned to? Perhaps in the future more cards will distribute Power Chord and Dream cards. The only thing stopping it is the will of the game designers.
So will Hearthstone eventually become a game where knowing every noncollectable set by heart is required? How many noncollectable cards will be played per game? What do you all think of these advancements in "noncollectable card sets"?
That's quite an interesting post! I'll coment somestuff and answer some of your questions taking inot account my opinion.
There will probably be many, but it is impossible to know how much. These kind of sets are quite funny and interesting as they add new possibilities that aren't normally available for the players to use unless they run some specific card(s) in their decks. I think Blizzard likes these kind of cards so I think they may add about 1-2 per expansion, being them Ysera-like or Spare Part-like. However, adding too many cards can make new players confused and lost in the middle of so many possiblities and can make people that don't spend much money in the game feel quite excluded of part of the fun. Thus, I don't like adding more than 1 per expansion.
I don't think they will add new cards to a previous set in the future. The reasoning behind this is the same behind the fact that Blizzard doesn't like changing previous cards, but adding new ones to have synergy with the older ones. Therefore, I think they can make one set have some kind of synergy with each other but adding new cards to a previous set can be rather confusing and... well, it's never good to change a set after it's released.
Knowing about any card by heart is already required to do well in the competitive meta/arena. Therefore, this applies too to the uncollectible ones, even though they have minor importance since they're very niche.
I'd say around 0-2 sets per game, but it depends on how fast the meta is and the popularity of theme decks like Mech decks. Spare Parts will become a thing when the expansion launches not because they're good, but because they come along with the might Mechs as a prize. From December till the next expansion/adventure is released, I can say that you will see at least one set pert game most often.
I like them, but I think there shouldn't be an excess of this kind of card as explained previously.
Personally I like the Non-collectible cards aspect, and am sure there will be more. I think it is an acceptable form of basic RNG. I don't think it will be required to know every non-collectible set because not everyone on ladder will play that way. And there definitely wont be a meta based around it so rarely you'll actually play around them. IMO OFC
It would be interesting if they added extra Dreams for Ysera one day. That would be a good way to give her a subtle buff/nerf/change, without changing her text.
That thing about the Non-collectible cards is very important to think, cause it requires from players more skills and all, but imo adding more randomness to the game sometimes take off the fun. Think of how many times you lost a game because of a random effect (or worst, when you have board control and lost to it).
I think if each class could get just one kind of a Spare Part it would be awesome, for example, the Spare Part to a Rogue player would be always [card]Finicky Cloakfield[/card], for a Mage player a Emergency Coolant and so on. It would give mechs more synergy with each class.

Does Banana count as a set of 1?
