I remember when they said that and that was the reason for nerfing Illidan.
With the current state of the game, if feel like the old Illidan, 7 mana 7/7, discard 3 cards and draw 3 cards for both players, would actually feel right at home and have real synergy with some cards.
It would be a much more busted HS version of Yu-Gi-Oh's Delinquent Duo. You'd never be able to have a competitive combo deck and even for other control decks you'd have warlock abusing the hell out of it. Pump your hand full of cards to reduce the chance of discarding your crucial cards while the other control player is more likely to have key cards like DKs, big value generators, and limited answers potentially getting discarded right away since they would often have a smaller hand size than the Control Lock.
50-percent deck destruction is a gamble I'd rather take. Make things interesting than "wun drop-wun drop-mushroom powah" aggro swarm garbage like odd/even Silver Hand Paladins or Zoolock, which is farking boring to play against.
If your deck recipe doesn't have a ton of early game removal or taunts, it just doesn't fly, and that limits the potential of Hearthstone. And it's nauseating enough to make me leave this game.
Also, this one card might be BURIED in the deck. So there's always the odds of the mulligan not going the warlock's way. Highly unlikely or worth carrying a second copy, probably.

This old version of illidan would have been broken, dr boom tier in vanilla.
Now it feels pretty on curve thanks to power creep.
Calling it a counter is being generous and acting like this is even close to anything people were asking for is being flat out disingenuous. People want neutral hand disruption or at the very least, more hand disruption spread throughout the rest of the classes. This card is garbage, that is why it makes people angry. Anyone who thinks this is going to break the meta or stop combo decks is a moron.
Blizzard: "We don't want to give players the ability to discard opponent's cards, because that might take away the fun of the game."
Also Blizzard: (Makes spell which literally destroys half of opponent's deck)
I mean, did their design philosophy change when I wasn't looking? What is this?
Are you retarded or what? People want a card like Duress or Thought Erasure. No one was asking for this card. It's not neutral. It doesn't help any class but warlock which is the only class that has hand disruption. It's way too expensive and slow to be reliable. It hurts your own decks and pushes warlock further into fatigue than their opponent if they have used their hero power at all. You are being deceitful as fuck with your argument here. People wanted Dirty Rat, and now you are like "well blizzard printed an 8 mana warlock card that destroys half our decks so what's the big deal!?"
That is not what the community was asking for dumbass. It's like comparing Fan of Knives to Twisting Nether. Just because both of them are technically aoe, doesn't make them somehow the same.

Aggro is the poison destroying Hearthstone.
