i feel like even with the tempo loss from the 5 mana spell, by having the potential for almost infinite value, not to mention the fact that the game is balanced around having 2 copies of any given card, so getting the chance for 3-4 fireballs, or 3-4 iceblocks is crazy. I think That this card provides to much value.
example
I won this match as big priest, but he ended up having 4 counter spells. Caught my holy nova with one, I caught the next one with a wasted silence. Assuming I’m in the clear, which I wasn’t, he got the 4 mana Rez. And his last one got my dragon fire potion. secrets are twice as strong when you can realistically play around them. I won by a sliver using dk hero power, he was playing ele DK mage.
I just think it's worth pointing out that you play a deck in which you instantly win if you draw a certain card by turn 4. And you're saying one of the slowest cards in the game (that's also completely random) is OP.
You are talking about Cabalist's Tome ? No, it is not OP by any means. It is random, and while it is true that getting 2 more ice blocks is really good in a deck like quest mage, getting 2 times Arcane Explosion is not. It is a 5 mana card that has the chance of providing you with value. 5 mana for drawing 3 cards is standard in hearthstone (see Thistle Tea , Nourish or Devour Mind ). But random cards are generally worse than cards from your deck. So you have a 5 mana tempo loss for a questionable value gain (with the upside that you don't get closer to fatigue which is only relevant in very few games).
On average, this is not a good card in a minion based deck in my opinion. It has its place in certain decks (mostly in Quest mage), but beside that, it is not a strong card.
As with many other RNG-style cards, it can be great, but it might as well be incredibly bad - and in my experience, most of the times it is OK at best.^^
Also, is nobody going to mention that tomb =/= tome? That kind of bugs me.^^
I mean nourish is strictly better and flexible, even devour mind is too unless you want those spells for quest, this thread belongs in a tomb, I mean museum.
I get that 5 mana is a tempo loss but playing that card turn ten for me ends up looking like this. Cabalist tomb +frost nova then a possible doomsayers if I have it. So even though yeah I lost that 5 mana to generate 3 spells, in the late game situation that’s 3 cards and a clear board or at least a frozen one. I guess my issue is that even though they are random, I rarely see the freezing potion + arcane nova + glacial mysteries. I just think more often then not getting that extra, blizzard, or frost nova, or meteor etc, is worth the other cards not being great. But they CAN be great. like I said the game is balanced around having 2 of any card in your deck, with the amount of spell generation for mage it make “smart plays” almost nonexistent cause you have no idea what the 12 cards he pulled out of thin air are. I’ve seen, rarely, people with 5 copies of cards and I don’t think that’s kosher.
Side note- I was playing big priest to finish the “play priest cards” quest. I get having Barnes on curve is strong as hell.

Of course Cabalist's Tome can be great. All rng cards have this chance (as you realize with Barnes yourself). But what you experience is called confirmation bias.
Just do what always help if you think something is majorly overpowered, but doesn't see a lot of play: Play it yourself. Take two copies of the tome in an elemental mage and go to ladder. You will realize that more often than not you do not have the time to play it (sometimes it is already hard to squeeze an Arcane Intellect in). And when you play it eventually, it gives you one usable card and two crappy ones. And then you die because your opponent used the tempo you lost for his advantage.

What meta are you playing in where Doomsayer goes off? We have tempo rogues with vilespine, jade druids with spellbreaker, shamans with devolve, priests with shadow word horror, pain, silence.
This card is not a problem. The problem cards are the "discover a spell" cards like Primordial Glyph. When you build a deck there should be limits to how many of each type of card you can have access to. This means you have make choices about what to include and what to exclude, and play intelligently during the game.
But these discover cards for Priests and Mages in particular allow someone to now possess potentially 3 or 4 versions of exactly the same type of card in any given game, each time being able to answer the opponent's moves.
(In fairness to mage players, Priests have it even easier with Lyra, which allows a ridiculous number of cards to be generated out of practically nowhere.)
I JUST READ THIS THREAD AND THOUGHT LOL ITS NOT OP AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT I HAD AN ARENA GAME WHERE I WAS 3-1. I WAS WINNING AND MY OPPONENT GOT CABALIST FROM PRIMORDIAL GLYPH WITH 1 CARD IN HAND. HE GOT ANOTGER PRIMORDIAL GLYPH WHICH GOT HER A FIREBALL. THE OTHER SPELL WAS FREEZING POTION WHICH SACED A 6 DAMAGE FACE HIT / TRADE. AND TGEN WHEN I THOUGHT OH IM GONNA FLOOD THE BOARD SHE CANT HAVE FLAMESTRIKE AND BOOM SHE GOT IT FROM CABALIST. I WAS STILL WINNING BUT MY COMPUTER DID THIS THING WHERE TGE SCREEN GOES BLACK FOR 2 SECONDS AND THEN EVERYHING IS NORMAL (NORMAL FOR THIS LAPTOP TYPE) AND THE HEARTHSTONE FROZE SO I HAD TO RESTART. MY OPPONENT GOT A FREE TURN AND I LOST CAUSE OF IT. WHY DO YOU HATE ME BLIZZARD. IM JUST A FREE 2 PLAY WHO WANTS TO PLAY ARENA AND NOT GET DESTROYD BY DEATH KNIGHTS AND RNG. I NORMALLY AVERAGE ABOUT 6 WINS AND NOW ITS LIKE DOWN TO 3-4 CAUSE MY OPPONENTS ARE SO LUCKY AND HAVE THE CRAZIEST CARDS EVER.
I DONT CARE IF THIS IS SALT THREAD OR NOT I JUST WANTED TO BURST MY ANGER

No, slow random value card.

Cabalists tomb is weak, idk what your smoking. Not doing anything for 5 mana is ridiculously bad.

Its OP when you are lucky. Therefore, not OP for me at all.
I do hate this card as i remember it wrecking my countless times when palying control paladin. Infinite removals and fireballs to the face.
But its just bad luck. Also it got worse as mage got some bad spells lately.

Yea getting 3x freeze potion is amazing!
oh come on, I only came here for the cabalist tomb comments and we only have two!!!!111!!!
:D
Yeah, that tomb is a nightmare in Wild. Always snatching my Tirion to put into a priest's deck.

You wouldn't be asking this question if you'd ever gotten 3x Glacial Mysteries lol.
