Pretty good synergy with Antonidas and good for early game tempo. Also a minor nerf to primordial glyph, a card that is look a little less good now! Happy with the mage set thus far as it brings the power level of Glyph down a tad.
You can put this in any other control class and it will be really nice and descent. But no, give it to mage because mages must have flexible OP spells because they are mages. If this spell is not included in mage decks is because they already have good turn 1 and 2, not because the spell is bad.
Mage got a tonne of terrible cards in this expansion for Arena, both the epic spells are trash, for example, and so are the minions. So one good common is hardly the end of the world
But this isn't even good!

The important difference is this card has utility outside of just Freezing an enemy, unlike Freezing Potion. It can ping a low-health minion in the early game, especially in Arena. I don't think that makes it a good card, but it makes it more practical than Freezing Potion + Shatter.
This being random isn't a big deal, either you deal 2 damage to a minion it can kill or you Freeze a minion it can't kill so either outcome is OK, Regardless, it's one more removal option for Renomage so ironically for an RNG card it makes the class more consistent.

You can combo this with apprentice on turn 1/2 (depending on coin) to have a 3/2 value boosting soft taunt on your board AND remove whatever 1-drop or even 2-drop your opponent played with 2 or less hp (which is a lot of them, if not everything) or freeze and damage it which is almost as much tempo loss for your opponent.
Flamecanon was a 2 of back in the day because it just vaporised whatever early drop your opponent played, this is cheaper than that, and unlike mage's 1 mana 2 damage spell, useful in other situations without putting spell damage in your deck.
If you play Tempo Mage you dont want the enemy to build a board at all (so there wont be many targets each round) + its zero mana with sorcer apprentice = great start into the game.

This card is not good, and it's not because of its randomness, but the usefulness of the card.
just think about what kinds of mage decks out there and what we got so far from lich king.
I have to say ,there aren't lot of space you can fit this card in.
I heard some people made a a freeze tempo mage deck, but there is no ice lance anymore. and tempo never worked because there is no flame walker.
might be freeze tempo will be a thing, but I don't think the deck going to be in tier 2 or higher.
