Got several legends in both formats (14k ranked wins), got all heroes golden (grinded out just recently), and I got some 2.5k arena wins before I recently started playing Arena again. I used to play Arena more extensively a couple years ago (had a few 12-win runs) and now that I don't have anything else to do in HS I've returned to it to try and complete my card collection. But God is the experience unpleasant.
I don't think I've ever averaged more than 6 wins, but now I'm averaging only 4.3 over some 40 runs. It doesn't matter whether I use Overwolf or make my own picks. It goes as follows, and it NEVER used to be like this before:
- my opponents are mostly golden hero portraits with either the Legend or Dungeon Run card backs who know what the F they are doing. Seldom do I see a "basic" player in the first few games
- said opponents drafting pretty much the same stupid powerful decks. If your deck is not stupid powerful like theirs, say good-bye to going infinite
- mages, how I hate them. I mean I can win against them but the times they do win (which is pretty often) it's always on account of stupid RNG cards like Tome or Glyph
- I've now drafted almost 40 decks, was offered 4 legendaries total
- play Hunter they said. It's OP they said. Too bad it cannot deal with the few Sleepy Dragons and Hungry Effins my opponents all seem to throw at it consistently
- play Priest they said. Too bad I only drafted 2 Free From Ambers during my 7 priest runs. With that said, I went 12 wins in one of them, somehow
I mean, am I just bad, or are only the hard-core playing Arena nowadays and I shouldn't expect to win more unless I get a lot more experience in the current meta?
P.S. Look at this exemplary 2-2 game, and how the pala (oh look, a golden portrait at 2-2!) is standing against my deck and draw luck. He managed all that by turn 5. I was dead on T7. Another fun 2-3 run. Incredible!
Standard, Wild, and Arena all have drastically different metas.
You have to practice a lot in each format in order to succeed because like you mentioned there are hardcore players who specialize in their favorite game mode and know the meta very well.

Well, i will admit that RNG in arena can suck, and micro-adjustments actually have impact on how classes perform lately, hunter was top dog when KAC hit, but it is no longer the case. It is still decent due to the cards it got, but they r not being offered as often as previously. I would suggest to kinda keep an eye on this thread (Arena K&C Meta/Class Tier Report) ppl discuss the changes in meta in there and this one (Kobolds & Catacombs: Arena Impact) where there is still ever so often a continuous discussion on how certain cards feel atm.
One thing to note tho, if you didnt play arena for a long time and came back with the idea you can just jump right back in, you will be sorely mistaken, as you im sure already realized. I mean the basics still apply, but you will have to learn how the meta develops and adjust to that. Id say its a greedstone right now, with priest and WL having rly good control options and prolonging the fights and winning by value.
OK so I've played HS since launch,
