I believe the reason is because most people are lazy and short on patience when it comes to building new and original decks. The truth is, they can be good. I've done well this season with all new Priest, Pally and Mage decks, but it took time and refining to make them good. Yeah I lost many times and then refined refined refined until A) the card choices were working and B) I learned how to properly play my own decks. It's not easy and if we are being honest most players want what's easiest and most powerful. I can't blame them for that.
I think the main reason why people don't use original deck is that they don't have infinite dust. When building a deck, you have to invest a lot of dust for cards that may not be good, and then you end up with a bad deck and no way to craft a Tier 1 deck anymore.
If you give people infinite dust, I'm sure there will be more original deck, at least in casual.
If you built it yourself, that's original right. It would better clarify if you can hint us on what makes it unique, like your twist on the deck.
I dunno. I decided archivist wasn't necessary. I just try to out value her in mirrors. My last game was just this vs a bomb warrior with archivist. I also don't run executes or shield slams. I rely on my minions for removal. Makes my deck very threat heavy.
Nothing unique. But, definitely my own deck. Just climbed to rank 4 with it, so it's not bad for a homebrew.

Great! Now you've revealed the secret and it's going to become net decked and no longer original! :)
Well, I personally have never copied a deck and I've been playing since Beta. Of course, I learn and adapt from other decks I've seen and played against. And with the 30-card deck size limit the overlap between most of my decks and net decks is often very high. For example, there are only so many card choices to include in a Disco Warlock deck. And my win rate? Well, I usually end up around Rank 10 in Wild. And I play to have fun; not necessarily to be OP. According to Deck Tracker which I installed a few weeks ago I win 51% of my games. That's good enough for me.
I guess I'm a cross between Johnny and Timmy.

Dependable loan sharks since 1960. We sink our teeth into every deal we make.
So many people copy each others decks, I only see original decks at the beginning few days of an expansion release. It's really sad to my eyes.
What do you guys think? I think it's one of the main reasons why HS becomes boring (couldn't find a better word) very quickly, and it's more of a grinding procedure playing the most flawless/high-performing decks.
I am playing my own version of control priest this expansion but also silent priest and control shaman. Building decks is fun and is a process that i love but in a very competitive meta game you need to know the limits of your building skill and the amount of cards you have. Create a legendary or epic card for playtesting is expensive already for some players (for me hurts like hell becuase i F2P for persona reasons) and there is a lot of new decks ideas for persons that already have all the card of the expansion and they are already on Legend but you probably dont match that people if you are wrinting this. People in Ladder uses ladder decks.
How can you win against the meta decks with your own idea if you dont try it again and again for teching and replacing some cards? in the end your original idea will transform into a meta deck pretty much everytime. People that "copy" decks are just cutting the testing of the process. You know pretty much that you need a way to counter big value in this meta for example even when is very limited for only 4 classes, like Warrior or Shaman, but you also need removal or ways to generate big cards on mid game to counter Mage. All this "you need..." will let you to a meta deck or something similar to that. So its not like "people is not original" is more like "people know that they will face this and this and this" they need to play something that not super lose to meta decks, in short, other meta decks
There are only so many ways to build a good deck of a certain archetype. Many people start with a "netdeck" list and then change a few cards to fit their preferences. Newsflash, however -- changing even just 3 cards is 10% different from the original deck, and is enough of a change to count as a new deck. So, there ya go, that person just made their own deck.
Also, when a new expansion is released. A f2p has a huge disadvantage.
Most people open 100-120 packs. And if you check out the cards they have, they are barely enough for "creative" purposes.
How long does it take a f2p to get 100-120 packs? Can a f2p even get them during the expansion? By the time a f2p even gets them, the end of the expansion have come and possibly everything have been discovered already.
Theres a 4th type, i hardly have any fun because i cant make my own decks with my ideas, i dont win because my decks are crap and i cant make weird and fun shiet because again i ont have the cards.
Many people say that if you want to play non-netdecks, just play against friend. However, your friends are not always online so there should be a mode that people cannot grind for gold, which are mostly the cause of the downfall of casual mode. This fresh mode should be named "Casual" and the old "casual" should be renamed "Unranked". Casual is meant for fun and pure meme decks while Unranked is for gold grinding and meta-deck testing.
thats it. Maybe choose a tribe or a legendary and add its key cards in. Now you need taunt for anti Aggro. A weapon breaker, an AoE. Oh and my deck is already full. Wow.
You know what? I have completely bonkers and unique deck ideas but the cards are missing. They don’t exist. I always wanted to build a deck around stalling my enemies turns with mana ghost like minions. But mana ghost is actually unique. And its weak af, too with only 2/2.
There are several options of why they play netdecks -They do not have enough dust or cards so they copy a deck with their resources with optimal results -Create a deck with some interesting ideas but lose often -Nobody likes to lose all day -The most common cards in the netdecks are good in their deck that in the end the original idea is going That of testing your deck again and again and that the result is always the same, the frustration therefore play decks with a high of victories. It is understandable to play optimal deck.
Well, you can't control what others play, but you can play whatever you want, Id' played Dragon Paladin this season and I plan to play Pirate Pogo Rogue the next one. For me the problem is that casual is not casual anymore. Of course people plays what is better to climb in ranked, but not in casual, casual needs a fix SOON.

That would work perfectly. But I don't think Blizzard wants to add a new button to the interface to have 1 additional game mode.
There once was a tale of Timmy, Johnny and Spike. Three Magic players.
Timmy liked to have fun and do weird and strange things and just have fun. Enjoying a deck is the most important part for this player.
Johnny likes to make decks and see if he can make an interesting card work. He sees making deck not as a part of card game, but THE part of the card game.
And Spike likes winning and to feel powerful. For the Spikes of this world winning equals fun. If they are not winning they aren´t having fun. They don´t care where the deck comes from, they care if it wins.
This applies to every card game. Now it´s difficult to fit exactly into this and a lot of people have a bit from another, but these are the general archetypes of the players that exist in card games.
Moral of this story everyone plays the game for a different reason, and neither of them is playing the one true way to play a card game. And neither of them is entitled to another player playing the game their way.
Oh man, I remember reading this when Mark Rosewater wrote this in his article.
You're wrong. Lots of people create their own deck orelse gets a base netdeck and change it so much that it's not even close to the original(thats what I do).
I have a friend who creates every single deck of his based on his own creativity. And through loses and adaptation.
They could if they wanted to make sure (since they're already gathering that information for the auto deck builder) that if you're joining thequeue with a deck thats very close to a net deck that you'll get queued into people doing the same.
Of course with the advent of the deck builder it will turn your decks into "net decks"
That way johnnies and timmies wont be bothered by spikes all the time. The spikes can go play each other
The other issue is card collections, not everyone has the money to time investment to have all the cards to make the net decks (at least the non-budget ones)

I am playing a dragon control warrior I built myself.
Does that qualify as original? Or just a netdeck.

yea its very easy to just copy and play the best decks and very hard to make ur own
people usually dont want to spend time doing that
i sometimes make entirely new decks but they dont perform that well even after a lot of refining

Final thought on this topic:
There are only so many ways to build a good deck of a certain archetype. Many people start with a "netdeck" list and then change a few cards to fit their preferences. Newsflash, however -- changing even just 3 cards is 10% different from the original deck, and is enough of a change to count as a new deck. So, there ya go, that person just made their own deck.
One of the main reason behind netdecking is the f2p model and dusting, let me elaborate.
Any player should at least have 1 competitive deck (Unless they're super casual).
There are 2 ways for a f2p to get there:
1. Just open packs and hope for the best
2. Dusting
The problem with dusting that it limits the card choices for new decks, there are less cards to use to be creative with.
So you'll have to play for several months until you have enough cards to build a new creative deck and this may not be enough.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, when a new expansion is released.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is WHY it is INCREDIBLY hard for a f2p not to netdeck.
But f2p make up the vast majority of ANY game.
Theres a 4th type, i hardly have any fun because i cant make my own decks with my ideas, i dont win because my decks are crap and i cant make weird and fun shiet because again i ont have the cards.
This is the F2Player

There are not enough tools for being creative?
ok, so you don’t netdeck, what you gonna build?
aggro
combo
control
thats it. Maybe choose a tribe or a legendary and add its key cards in. Now you need taunt for anti Aggro. A weapon breaker, an AoE. Oh and my deck is already full. Wow.
