Kripp did a great video outlining his love for the new set, but also voicing his concern over the price of the new expansion. To avoid coming off as salty, I'll leave my own experience out of it - how much I spent, and how many legendaries I managed to (not) open.
There are 22 legendaries in the new Un'Goro expansion. The pity timer has us opening them at a rate of 1 per 40 packs. I'll be generous here and say that we're opening them at a rate of 1/30 packs.
In Canadian dollars, we're paying $2 per pack. With those numbers we're paying $60 for 30 packs, and getting one legendary.
$60 x 22 legendaries comes to $1320 for every legendary in the set. There are other factors to this such as being able to dust duplicates and then crafting legendaries you don't have. But there are factors on the other side in that I'm assuming you open no duplicate legendaries, which is a very generous assumption. So let's say those 2 things balance out.
Magic: the Gathering lists the price of 1 of each of their cards (in the brand new expansion. evidence - US prices listed, I converted to CAD to make it all even in this thread) at $79 Canadian. Since you can have 4 of any given card in your deck, multiply that by 4 and we're looking at $316 for the entire set.
$1320 vs $316.
And then we have the fact that MTG cards are trade-able and they are purchasable, so you don't need to keep ripping open packs like a crazy person to get what you need.
The whole reason I bring this up is because I'm someone who is willing to sink a ton of money into my hobbies, and in every other Hearthstone Meta I have had no problem sinking enough money into each expansion so that I could play each deck in the current meta.
With so many decks in the meta (which is definitely a compliment to this expansion's card design - great job there), this is the first expansion where I am left out in the cold on playing some of the decks that I would love to play just because of the cost of entry.
Hearthstone is asking (at minimum) 4x more than the competitor. Is it really sustainable to continue to ask for this amount of investment for a digital product? Keeping in mind that we have two more big sets coming at us this year.
I don't know about anybody else, but I'm not willing to invest $4000 a year into playing Hearthstone (3 sets x 1320 = $3960).
The data of the Link is slightly contradictory since they say you need to open on average 18 packs to get a leg, but they also state that you get only 4.5 legendaries when you open 100 packs (expected would be 5.5 legendaries if the former was true). But for the sake of your calculation, I'd take 20 (also easier to calculate with).
I have zero dollars to spare because I'm on welfare. I want to play a card game. Mtg looks good, can I start with 0 dollars? No? Damn. Guess I can't play card games :(
oh what's this? The makers of Warcraft made a card game, but I don't have money :( oh I can play? Nice! But how can they afford it if I never put in any money? Oh some other people have disposable income? Lucky >.< oh I got a legendary from my free packs! Oh another!
/end sarcasm
This is the world of economics. Don't just think about the people that HAVE money to spend, think about all those that don't, and those that live in countries with horrible economies. In the grand scheme of things blizzard NEEDS to do this in order to sustain the free to play model.
I bought 50 packs with gold, got 2 hemits and the Mage legendary. my friend opened 40 and got 4 legendaries. My brother bought the 50 preseason thing and got only 1. Yet, money or no money we can all play!

At 20 packs you're stlll looking at $880 for each set, meaning it costs you $2600 / year to play hearthstone with all the cards. An embarrassing number really. I don't really buy that average though; not from this last expansion anyways. The number also doesn't take into account getting all the epics, which are often an even bigger issues than the legendaries due to being 2-ofs.

The whole point of this was to suggest that Hearthstone is going to lose those paying members because of the astronomical price of entry. And like you said, no paying members, no freebies.
I'm sure as hell not going to pay $1300 for all the cards - but I'm also not going to be willing to pay $325 for 1/4 of the cards soon either. I can buy 4 premium brand new release PS4 games for the cost of 1/4 of the cards? Sign me up.
I spend 250 euros per expansion and have basically all the cards thanks to daily quests. In MtG there is no such things as daily quests or 10g per 3 wins, in my experience they are actually comparable in terms of cost.

I didn't draw any conclusion whether hearthstone is cheap (also because I do not really care), but I wanted to give you some actual data on which you can base your calculations.
As is, you based your calculations on an arbitrary assumption without any factual basis. And whether you "buy" these numbers or not, they have at least underlying data.
This card is a staple at 4 if you play with Black in Modern. Also, the set you listed was essentially a failed set and you don't need a ton of cards from every expansion to be able to compete anyway. I have more than half of Un'Goro and I've spent about $120 on it so far. I couldn't hope to get nearly that far with that much money in MtG.
All these kind of thread have a common pitfall, they assume that you need all Legendaries of the expansion to be competitive/enjoy the game, that's far from truth.
Yes the flavor of some Legendaries is cool but you can leave with having less than half of each since most of them are not that good to start with, most of them are just shiny that's all.

My information was based on the fact that I opened 90 packs to the tune of 2 legendaries. Not based on factual bases? First hand experience, actually.

You got 11 legendaries for $120? Kind of hard to believe.
Why are we assuming people need every legendary? Why are we not factoring in all the quest and win gold? Why are we calculating based on a terrible legendary rate? Why are we not calculating dust and how much can be crafted from duplicates?
This seems like an absurdly off base calculation of costs, considering I have most cards and have spent nowhere near the amount suggested.

That's pure bullshit mate, unless you're bloody lucky! I've been opening Un'goro packs like mad, 68 packs now and I opened one legendary. F2P player here.

Yeah sure, your 90 packs is surely more reliable than the several thousand packs they opened.
I got 6 legendaries out of 100 packs. That's even 10 packs more data. Do I have a different game than you? Or do my numbers count more, because more packs?
But really, I wanted to help you and I don't care on which basis you make your claims. But don't complain if people do not take your statements serious then.

They also assume that 75% of the hearthstone community is not retarded. I always forget that when I try post something that makes complete sense here once a year.
many blizzard worker will come here said 5-10 packs 1 legendary. Wtf.
average 40 pack 1 legendary.
MSG. 60 pack legendary x1, 10 trash epic.
new expansion 40 pack, 1 legendary. Trash tier.
consider half of legendary are trash. You need open 400-500 packs to have full collection. Or 200-300 packs for all the meta decks.
blizzard system also trash. It quite common to get duplicate legendary. The odd is less than 0.01% but still get. Legendary 2%, got 20-30 legendary per expansion. You can count what is the odd get same legendary. Blizzard do in on purpose to boost packs sales.
sorry for my bad English. My phone have crap browser. Cannot go back to edit the grammar or spelling error. Only can delete all and retype again.

Either you lie or you opened other kinds of packs in between the ungoro packs...if you open 68 packs without interruption you get 3 legendaries...eod
I opened 90 packs and got 2 legendaries. So not really sure wtf you're talking about.
Actually it is possible to only get 1 legendary in 68 packs. Pity timer is 40 packs. Opening your first leg after 38 packs and then opening another 30 packs without getting a legendary could happen.
