So I've been looking over this forum and the amount of discrepancies on how to play Highlander priest is just insane. Everybody has their own idea, and honestly that's what the game is about, but after 311 games and 11 revisions with my own version of the Highlander, I hope you listen to my own 2 cents and think about what I got to say here lol.
A quick note: I've been playing priest since Goblins vs Gnomes came out, after I was rank 25 and someone shadow word pain'ed my frothing berserker, which was my first rare. I thought that was OP as **** and decided I'll do priest. 1559 wins later I finally hit legend lol
Ok so let's get started.
I see most people wonder about is the inclusion of Prophet Velen. How is this even up for discussion? YES. If you don't have prophet velen, who buffs your hero power, what is the point of playing a deck that is centered around using your hero power to finish off the opponent, be it to clear the board or go for lethal, or to complete your OTK? Auto include.
This begs the inclusion of Mind Blast. If you don't have it, auto concede all mirror match ups, cuz you either rush your opponent down with your borderline combo deck that's missing pieces, or wait long enough for your opponent to draw into up to 40dmg in a turn, and all the armor in the world isn't going to save you at that point.
At this point to any logical person it's becoming obvious this is a combo deck. Not midrange, not aggro, not really control because you're going to cough out the FINITE amount of damage you can deal. Combo-deck. Let's say this again, RAZAKUS is a COMBO deck. What's the most important thing in a combo deck? I'm no expert but probably card draw. And some people leave this up to chance and tech in oozes and geists and make excuses that "it helps in this meta cuz weapons and jade and stuff". You know what else helps in this, and frankly, any meta? Drawing your win condition. Bloodmage Thalnos, Novice Engineer, Gnomish Inventor, Shadow Visions, Power Word: Shield and Acolyte of Pain are the bare minimum. BARE MINIMUM.
"I don't have kazakus is there a replacement?" NO. There is not. Not in standard at least, and in wild the replacment is either Lightbomb or Reno Jackson. Kazakus is there to make your RNG based deck even more RNG based, and win you games by creating unfair advantages. It's a must have because it improves the consistency of the deck. It's like
not including Raza. are you kidding me?
Elise the Trailblazer. THIS IS ALL IN CAPS BECAUSE HOLY CRAP I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH. DON'T EVER PLAY ELISE!! "Oh but it won me this game and that game and I like her and she cost me 1600 dust so I have to play her, also, value" NO. STOP. I don't care which pro players you saw include her in the deck, they might not have ever played priest before and if they include elise "cuz value, especially with shadow visions", you and them are really missing the point of this deck. Cuz it's combo, not control. You HAVE to finish the game by the time you draw for the 26th time, cuz if the game got to that point you're playing vs someone who created their deck to beat u in the long run anyways, and 5, hell, 10 more random cards are not going to do you any good vs mill warrior or jade druid that now spawns 10/10s. "oh but that's why i tech'd geist in".. well then play secret mage if you wanna play geist cuz you must've cut card draw for it, and if you're cutting card draw from a highlander deck... most of my wins vs priest came off guys who ran elise, and all my losses were vs big priest or a highlander that got the combo faster than i did.
with all this said, there isn't all that many flexible spots in this deck list. honeslty you know what the most flexible card in this deck might be? The Northshire Cleric, but then again no, because it draws removal, stops early plays, and draws you cards. 2nd most flexible is Curious Glimmerroot, because you could actually swap it out for more of your own card draw.
These are just some things i noticed that are simply misplays that happen before the game even begins, and I've seen priest, my all time fave, go through some serious slumps, so it'd be nice to cement him as an all time great for at least a couple seasons, like when dragon priest was annihilating the ladder.
This is obviously all just my opinion, and I'm really interested in what you guys might have to say, cuz maybe it'll open my eyes to something im missing from the picture and ultimately lead to an even better deck list for everyone
Thanks for your post. I think those are pretty solid opinions. I don't understand why so many lists include prophet Velen without Mind Blast. If you have one, it makes sense to me to have the other.
no, opposite, most lists include elise and the top list on hearthpwn even goes as far as to include cairne bloodhoof, lich king, and n'zoth, while ommiting velen, which is actually ridiculous. so no, not everyone knows the list, and this has nothing to do with net decking, it's about tech card selection; did you bother to read the post or do you just like the sound of your own voice lol?
i tried bully for a while but while it can be really good if you get all your combo pieces out, it also means you need to hold on to 4-5 coins for a long period of the game, and if the opponent knows what they're doing and u have say 8 cards in hand and play bully, they cast 3 spells and u start milling yourself unless u throw all ur coins away anyways

Kabal Talonpriest - I ran this card for a long time. I'm trying the deck without it for now. Most of the time it's simply a 3/4 on a bare board. I thought, if that's the case, what is it really doing to support the win condition? Not much. For now, I'm trying a second taunt minion, Second-Rate Bruiser. The only other taunt minion in the deck (Tar Creeper) is - in my opinion - somewhat weak because it lets the opponent dictate trades and doesn't allow you to make favorable trades of your own. Also, unlike Tar Creeper, SRB isn't vulnerable to Shadow Word: Pain (arguably the second best target in the mirror, after Priest of the Feast).
Acolyte of Pain - this is almost always a 3 mana "draw one card" and often a 3 mana "use up removal". I honestly don't see this card getting a lot of value in most matchups. In the mirror, it's vulnerable to Potion of Madness and Silence, and does not contest any turn 3 board whatsoever.

yeah for sure;
Kabal Talonpriest is not much help, you're right, and I can totally see the argument for Second-Rate Bruiser. This spot it seems in my deck is occupied by Lyra the Sunshard though, and if i had to choose bruiser vs tar creeper, I think I would stick with creeper because it's important to know that you can 100% play it on the curve or on an empty board without draw backs. when playing this deck im not really worried about sub-optimal trades, im more worried about how much i can draw and how well can i stall the board
Acolyte of Pain though - you make an excellent point really, this could be replaced by any other card draw out there, now that i think about it the only time i get real use out of it is when i hit it myself after anduin's been dropped. there is however a reason as to why the acolyte under performs, which you pointed out yourself; it gets swiftly removed or silenced or played around. if you drop it on turn 3 vs rogue or paladin, and they can't play around you, you might as well just block a few initial plays they had in mind, and the further you make it into the game with highlander, the better your chances of winning are, while the opposite is true for your opponent.

As a curiosity, though, just today an Elise Highlander Priest has replaced the Velen Highlander Priest as the highest winrate priest deck at HSReplay. Velen has dropped to the 4th place, losing about 1-2% winrate, after two Elise Highlanders, one Big Priest and one Lich King Highlander.
Out of curiosity, I've been saving up to craft more stuff for priest and the obvious next in line was to complete the Velen deck. Taking into account that right now I have enough dust to craft one Lengendary and one epic and that I'm using Tainted Zealot for Spell damage... would you first craft Velen or Thalnos for this deck? (for me the obvious answer would be Velen since it opens new possibilities for the deck I already have whereas Thalnos would just give me one more extra card draw for 1600 dust, though many people are telling me otherwise).
Out of curiosity, do you think Stonehill Defender instead of Tar Creeper would even be a consideration as a stall card? What are your thougths in general on Stonehill for priests?
Velen is definitely more of a key card in this specific deck, although Thalnos is versatile in nearly any deck or meta. You lose the ability to Thalnos + Spirit Lash if you don't have him, but you can still Velen + Spirit Lash if you need to heal back up to full (if you didn't know, Velen makes Spirit Lash deal 2 dmg aoe and 4 dmg lifesteal).
Tar Creeper > Stonehill by a long shot. I'm running Second Rate Bruiser as a second taunt and it's working out great (hit legend last night!)

definitely velen, because he also buffs your hero power, and it's double, not +1. thalnos can be replaced by zealot, and to compensate for the loss of card draw you can drop something for mass dispel.
also as far as hsreplay goes, it doesn't give me access to all of it's stats, so i see what you're talking about, that big priest is top of the list, but it's not constricted to rank 5-legend, which in my opinion is what matters here, and where the most refined versions of all decks reside and duke it out for supremacy. it's also hard for me to tell what period of time they're recording these stats over.
metastats.net has elise less HP as the most successful deck in all of the meta over the last 4 days right no, standing at a whopping 81% win rate above rank 5. 81!!
I was grinding all month with a version of highlander priest running Elise the Trailblazer, The Lich King, and Obsidian Statue for more late game value, as well as Holy Nova, cutting some of the draw. I had tried a draw heavy version of the deck early in the month, but it was teched hard for Pirate Warrior, including Acidic Swamp Ooze, Golakka Crawler, Gluttonous Ooze, and Cabal Shadow Priest, and no Prophet Velen either. This deck did badly, but with the heavier late game version I reached rank 1 3 stars and stalled out hard, falling back to rank 3 for a while.
After reading this thread I cut late game plus Holy Nova, and added in Novice Engineer, Acolyte of Pain, Gnomish Inventor, and Mind Blast. The changes made a huge difference. After grinding like a 54% win rate from rank 10 to rank 1, I went 16-6 with a way more consistent deck and hit legend for the first time. Thanks for the advice.
I want to talk about Lyra the Sunshard for a second too. For the same reasons you don't include Elise:
"Oh but it won me this game and that game and I like her and she cost me 1600 dust so I have to play her, also, value".....most of my wins vs priest came off guys who ran elise, and all my losses were vs big priest or a highlander that got the combo faster than i did.
I don't run Lyra. You know what you need to get value from Elise? Cheap spells. You know what cards I don't want to cycle that aren't being used as the finsher? Cheap spells. Running Lyra means you're wanting to cycle spells while simultaneously spamming 2 damage at face each turn, which means you're running a card you cannot play until you've drawn and played both Raza and DK. Like your situation with Priests who run Elise, most of my wins in the mirror are also from players running Lyra. Lyra wastes a turn doing something fancy that doesn't contribute to the win, IMO. The dream of using Lyra + Radiant to cycle and burn your opponent with repeated cheap spells just doesn't happen often enough. And like I said earlier, the list I'm running includes specific cheap spells that I want to use with Radiant + Velen for upwards of 28 burst from hand.
tl;dr - I think Lyra is fun but doesn't belong in an optimized Razakus list

What do you use as replacement?
idk if you consider it a replacement, I'm just running a different list.
no this is what this thread's about, it's great to see so much input; i agree that n'zoth could change this deck into control, but now that i think about it maybe mind blast isn't what should be cut. if there was a way to put ANOTHER win condition into priest, without sacrificing the consistency of either by having them interfere with each other (for ex. cutting card draw for deathrattle cards, or vital combo pieces), that would be mint.
just taking the list on top of the page as an example, if Cabal Shadow Priest, DoomsayerCurious Glimmerroot and Lyra the Sunshard made way for N'zoth, cairne, shellraiser and say polluted hoarder, and if novice engineer would be swapped for loot hoarder, this list would not only get another win condition, it would also get +1 card draw and +3 draws from playing n'zoth, never mind the ability to play on the curve a lot of time and not rely on board clears..
holy..
@SchruteBucks yeah i hear what you mean, lyra in a lot of cases is like acolyte, it's impossible to get 100% of value out of her, but she forces removal and often your opponent wastes a turn standing on their head trying to remove her, be it with swipe or leeroy or twisting nether; it takes away their cards and buys you a turn, and if she lives, you can start cycling your larger spells that you can determine you might or might not need later on.
TLDR i dont think any single card in this deck gets used to its potential, besides raza and kazakus. the power comes from the sum of all parts. if lyra was to be dropped, i would include another threat that forces immediate action, and i can't really think of one. or more card draw (mass dispel?)
TLDR of TLDR good point lol
and on the topic of Cabal shadow priests in the original deck, only reason she stayed instead of more card draw is because shadow word horror is now not the only card that benefits from pint size potion
yeah i always try to wonder what else could i run instead of her, but i can't think of what to put in instead of her. i've been really tempted by mass dispel but, out of all the games i've done so far without it i never really thought "wow, i wish i had mass dispel now", but i did sometimes wish i had the distraction of lyra to throw on the board
maybe there's some hidden replacement out there for her, besides tar creeper, but it's imperceivable to me

Yepp, I use Metastats as well and it has many features that HSReplay lacks (specially all those rank-specific features that HSReplay hides behind a paywall, though the problem with it is that it does not have nearly as much data as HSReplay, so the statistics tend to lean towards the extremes. (It's much easier to see a 81% winrate in a Metastats deck that has only 200 games played than a 60% winrate in a HSReplay deck with 1500 games played).
The one you are talking about has some very reasonable 550 games played, but exactly the same list in Metastats, with 3200 games registered, has just 55'7% winrate (though your point about that being over all tiers still stands, it might just be people not playing the deck properly, as a matter of fact in Metastats the deck has a 78% winrate in high ranks and just a 42% winrate in low ranks, which makes me think that a guide on how to properly play the deck might be far more important than the list itself).
Being it still too early since the nerf patch and being myself still poor (and not very fond of Velen as a card), I guess I will wait a bit to see how the meta settles. speciallys since I still lack cards like Ysera, Elise, N'zoth, Umbra, Awaken the Makers, Glimmerrot, Gluttonous Ooze...
Thanks for all the tips. I think you made some great points. I am running deathrattle version. And as you mentioned, I am running Prophet Velen without Mind Blast. oop, sorry, didn't see it for some reason; if you start ahead on health and you've got the OTK, then it is pretty much a 5 mana OP velen, but there's a high chance this could backfire pretty bad at first glance. i never actually thought of it, i'll do some testing and let you know, and maybe you can run him for a bit yourself and see what you come up with, post results here?
another thing is that in WILD there's so many cards that you can now play around with, i wonder if there isn't just better cards to take his place like lightbomb or velen himself, who doesn't get the nod in a lot of decks, but it is hard to resist a 6 dmg to face per hero power use. would take 3 cards to kill an opponent at 20 health
