looks like while kabal and jade classes dominates the meta, goons beaten very hard. Didn't blizz test those mechanics before realese ? What an irresponsible behavior.
It's an incredible lack of foresight to print cards like patches and STB and then leave paladin completely vulnerable to it.
While Paladin isn't very good in constructed right now, it is amazing in Arena and in my opinion far better then Mage, because you are more likely to get a good deck and reach 6-7 wins consistently. If the meta slows down and we see more Midrange instead of Aggro and Reno (which will happen with the next rotation) then Paladin has a good chance at returning to full Power.
What makes you think aggro decks will slow down with next rotation? The most important cards are still there.
paladin is not bad in lategame...tirion,nzoth,good rag,syl...all is in place to have strong late game...problem is a we suck in early, and we are AT best mediocre in mid game..i hope a blizz will give us rly GOOD 2 and 3 drop after challenger rotation...or some control tools (fiery war axe-like weapon,3 dmg 2 mana spell, solid boardclear, hard removal..just freakin anything : D) or mb moar survival tools like prevent fatal damage, give your hero div shield...whatever.
Exactly my thoughts.
The place where paladin shines is late game. That makes paladin more of a control class. But problem is, paladin is centered more around playing minions and buffing them. It is too clunky with answers. Equality combo is powerful but it requires 2 cards. Paladin doesn't have good answers versus minions. Consecration is 2 damage, rather low. Truesilver is 4 damage for 4 mana. It is still good, but not as much anymore. Hammer of wrath is bad, 3 damage for 2 mana is standard. 4 mana is way too slow. Hero power is not really useful for any archetype; bad for aggro, bad for midrange, insignificant for control. The way the class is structured, paladin doesn't have good ways to benefit much from tokens. Quartermaster used to solve this problem, but blizz didn't introduce anything to fill it's place.
Since paladin lacks answers, and has buffs; paladin needs good minions to play early. And paladin doesn't have good early minions to take the board.
On the other hand, paladin has good healing cards for control archetype. So, if paladin gets good early minions (non-conditional) or good answers to opposing threats in the new expansion; it can suddenly be a good class. Or if someone figures out a way to handle this weakness. But all that is unlikely and unnecessary right now. Because Reno Jackson is a better healing mechanic. So paladin doesn't have an adventage in this field, while being weaker in other aspects. With reno rotating out of meta, paladin can be among the strongest healing classes again.
Paladin really got that shaft. Not only is goons the worst faction because it is too slow and weak for the meta, its directly antithetical to the Paladin strategy Blizz has pushed since the beginning. Paladin has always been about buffing on the board with spells. Goons is about buffing in the hand. For goons to be successful, you have to have essentially a zoo deck, which eliminates all those board-buffing spells that have been staples since basic. Blizz has continued to release Paladin Board buff spells in expansions until this one (TGT: Seal of Champions, Competitive Spirit, WOG: Divine Strength, Karazhan: Silvermoon Portal). Not to mention, the new hand buffs have anti-synergy with Steward of Darkshire and Stand Against Darkness, which were also designed for buffing minions on the board.
Honestly I don't know what Blizz was thinking except maybe they feel bad about the way they "fixed" Paladin last time and think that the community is still so pissed about the abomination that was secret Pally that they want the class to languish for a while.
Give them a break. They took a risk, didn't work, because Patches meta is too aggressive and filled with amazing minions that can't be outtraded by buffed up minions. Paladin is definitely not tier 1, but it's OK if you are not tryharding for legend. You can get to high ranks and still enjoy the fact that people DON'T see Paladins at all.
Paladin suffers from too few generally good minions. Back when we had Shieldbot and Muster we had things that were just generically good drops. Too many of the pally cards right now are situational cards which are still good cards but we need general value that really dropped off when standard rotated last. Since the last standard rotation we have had what, N'Zoth which we have one class card to support, and Anyfin combo (which is a meta dependent deck).
What pally lacks right now is just generically good standalone cards. We lack removal so what we need is generically good value minions that are not situational or build dependent (aka things they dont want to do now).
