Tempo mage using secret synergies.
This deck moves incredibly fast in the early game with cards like Kirin Tor Mage, Medivh's Valet and Arcanologist. Mana Wyrm has high damage potential and can set your opponent within burn range very quickly.
Counterspell is fantastic at protecting your board, and can be a win condition against Druid or Big Priest. A previous weak link in this deck was Mirror Entity, but Explosive Runes is a perfect fit for the deck and replaces it well.
This deck has plenty of burn in Firelands Portal, Primordial Glyph, Fireball and Frostbolt. Aluneth is a win condition, allowing you to draw into all of your violent cards.
Cheating out Kabal Crystal Runner for 0 and 2 mana is also extremely satisfying and hard for your opponent to deal with.
Mulligans:
Hard Mulligan for Babbling Book and Mana Wyrm. Two-drops are also fine to keep, especially if you are going second. Never keep secrets in hand. The reason secrets are good in this deck is because they can be cheated out and provide synergy. Individually, they are pretty slow cards on 3 mana. Even when you have both Kirin Tor Mage and a secret, it is generally best to mulligan both unless you also have a turn one play.
Note: Mana Wyrm is one of the more valuable cards in the deck because of the damage it can snowball. Sometimes it is a fantastic turn one play, but if you have nothing to follow it up consider holding it. For example, turn one Mana Wyrm into the opponent's Flame Imp is pretty poor without a spell to follow it up.
Tech:
Gluttonous Ooze and Acidic Swamp Ooze might be more viable as the KnC meta develops. Possible one-of's replacing Meteor or a Sorcerer's Apprentice.
Golakka Crawler is a fantastic card against Tempo Rogue, Midrange Hunter, and Token Druid. Possible replacement for Sorcerer's Apprentice.
Edit: Removed Meteor and Bonemare for two Corridor Creeper
Removed Corridor Creeper ahead of nerfs.
Whats your game plan when Aluneth is drawing you in to fatigue ?? You dont have anything to unequip your weapon...
If you haven't been able to kill your opponent with burn by the time you hit fatigue, then you have most likely lost anyways.
On a related note though, I want to try out a deck with both Aluneth and Medivh. You could run the big spell package, which Medivh fits into naturally, and then have a way to stop the draw before it gets out of hand.
Archmage Antonidas is a pretty awesome card, but I'm not sure how well it can slot in for Aluneth. Aluneth is intended to increase the winrate against control decks because you can draw enough burn with it to contend in the later game. If you're finding that you lose to control decks too often, I would recommend cutting Archmage Antonidas and putting in a Cobalt Scalebane or even a Corridor Creeper. If you have Patches the Pirate , you could also try to cut both Babbling Book for two Southsea Deckhand (Who sometimes get charge) and then run Patches the Pirate instead of Archmage Antonidas.
True!
To try to get around frustrating RNG, you can always keep Aluneth in your starting hand against priest and warlock. You might even want to hard mulligan for it if your hand isn't that good to begin with.
Awesome, thanks dude.
would Shifting Scroll be an okay card to sub in for Primordial Glyph?
Primordial Glyph is a very unique card in that it can gain tempo on a different turn than on the one it's played. Addditionally, it can get double discounts from Sorcerer's Apprentice. If you want to climb with this deck, I highly recommend crafting it. Otherwise, I think a better replacement for the card would be Golakka Crawler or Breath of Sindragosa. I haven't experimented with Shifting Scroll yet, but I think that it is likely more at home in a control mage. Those decks can afford to wait several turns for the card to turn into a good spell, but it's too slow for tempo mage.
