Hi Hearthstoners!
I’m MessyOD, a competative Hearthstone player. Sometimes I stream on my channel Messy Casts and I want to share my thoughts and experience with the control warrior spellstone build. I aim to create a competive deck for ladder and tournament play. Please feel free to share your thoughts with me!
There are already a few cool strategies out there in theorycraft like 1-2-3 punch warrior and the EZ Big Warrior. Looking a those lists and the new cards upcomming I got this idea that solved problems with control warrior in the past. Back in the day control warrior struggled with tempo swings. You want to clear minions and develop a board or armor up. With new cards comming up like Arcane Tyrant and 5+ mana spells like Brawl, Unidentified Shield Lesser Mithril Spellstone and even Ironforge Portal this problem might be solved.
We are going to take a look at some new cards:
Bladed Gauntlet: I actually doubt this card. It's not good in the early game (you don't have armor and you cant remove a minion because you have zero attack) but strong in late game if you have a lot of armor. It has to be tested.
Yes you are missing Bring It On! and Reckless Flurry. I just don't want to give away my armor or reduce my opponent's minions. These cards are only powerful when you opponent has no cards in hand and a board. I think Brawl and any whirlwind effect with Sleep with the Fishes does the same. Brawl is even better because it ban be combined with Arcane Tyrant for a nice tempo swing.
Gemstudded Golem is a card I whould like to test. The stats are very good and you can pick up the win instantly versus an aggro deck. But, there are disadventages. It can be silenced or even worst, being a victim of Vilespine Slayer.
Unidentified Shield is a card i really like. I might feel random to some players but the bonus is very nice (Tower Shield +10, Serrated Shield, Runed Shield, Spiked Shield). The worst outcome whould be the Tower Shield +10 in my opinion. It just doesn't add tempo of value. Spiked Shield has his synergy with Lesser Mithril Spellstone and that's really nice :D
Geosculptor Yip: I also doubt this card. There is a decent chance you are over 10 armor and it's better to get a 8 drop out of this minion (8-drops are better than 10-drops in general. Too bad for Bring It On! XD). Here again, this does not work with Reckless Flurry. So this card in this deck might be added if you want to add value, but i think Medivh, the Guardian does the same.
Lone Champion look great versus aggro decks and it can dammage minions for a nice Sleep with the Fishes set-up. This also has to be tested and is meta depended.
Zola the Gorgon: I like this card. It gives value or just copy a minon you need like Gemstudded Golem.
Arcane Tyrant is the MVP. If you can combine it with your spells it gives you nice tempo and that's great while armoring-up. There are also possibilities to add Ironforge Portal if you want to be more minon heavy.
Well, that's it! Please leave your comment below and maybe see you in my channel!
Edit 1:
Removed:
Zola the Gorgon, Slam, Ravaging Ghoul
Added:
second Bladed Gauntlet, second Gemstudded Golem, second Lone Champion
Edit 2:
- Shield Slam is removed and is no longer needed because you run dubble Bladed Gauntlet.
- Skulking Geist is added vs jade druid and also helps vs Razakus Priest
- Dead Man's Hand is added because you need more value vs big priest. Make sure you have a good hand when use this cards.
- Lone Champion is removed because most times Tar Creeper is better and was underperforming.
- second Slam added for draw, Execute, Sleep with the Fishes and acolite of pain synergies.
- second Gemstudded Golem added. This guy is a wall and can be a instand win vs Zoo. Look uit for rogues with Vilespine Slayer
I've had some great success with this deck in control and combo matchups, but has trouble vs aggro if you don't draw Sleep with the Fishes and a whirlwind effect card early. Medivh the Guardian is the starring card of this deck, after controlling a while the huge minion swing turns with the spellstones are crazy.
The only change I made was switching out the two Bladed Gauntlet with two Ironforge Portal for additional synergy with MVP Arcane Tyrant and Medivh.
You are right about the drawing issue with Sleep with the Fishes. If you want to be stronger vs aggro you might try Tar Creeper or Lone Champion. Ally armorsmith might also do the trick.
I waited a week to start dusting and crafting cards from K&C, i really like this deck!
How about its performance, anyone into deck statistics? :)
Any ideas on a replacement for [card]Medivh, the Guardian[/card] would Malkorok be okay?
Medivh has synergy with the spell you play and tehrefore more value. Malkorok can be a replacement but is more a tempo card imo.
I don't have Arcane Tyrant, so I replaced them with Arcane Giant, and I didn't to play with Zola, so I put Yogg instead. Pretty fun deck so far, congrats!
Personally, coz of jadedruid, i took out shieldslam x2 and put in 1 dead man's hand and 1 skulking geist. Works wonders!
Did the same in my 3.0 version. If you run 2 Bladed Gauntlet, you dont need Shield Slam
That's better! I made a few changes as well. Gemstudded Golem is way better than i thought just like the Bladed Gauntlet. Enjoy!!
Good post, OD! I'm looking forward to see you try this one.
Over the past couple of weeks, as cards got released, people have been talking in general on how OP Exodia Mage will be, and based on how everyone will be trying some of those lists out, maybe Dirty Rat can also find a place on this list to target combo oriented decks.
The only armor generation in the deck comes out of Shield Block and a 3 out of 4 6 mana spell. Good luck getting enough armor for the Gemstudded Golem to attack. Especially, with almost no other taunts to conserve some armor as well.
Medivh, the Guardian may struggle to get any value in a meta with several weapon removal options, plus the gamble to get a good 7 drop like Archmage Antonidas or Swamp King Dred from the Spellstone will probably leave you very sad most of the time - there are so many 7 drops that do nothing or are simply bad/understated you might as well be OK just playing your Arcane Tyrant for tempo swings, instead of trying to make Atiesh work (so many bad 5 drops as well).
Furthermore, with such a low number of weapons in the deck, you might even struggle to upgrade the Spellstone to begin with. Those matches without Blood Razor will be so hard.
Are you sure the tempo you try to generate with this list will be able to beat Razakus Priest or Jade Druid? I think it will have a hard time to close some of those games out. The DKs will out-value this deck without any Dead Man's Hand tricks.
BUT, I don't want to be too negative just feeding some thoughts for your tinkering process. I think you should still try your original ideas and update this guide with experiences (and highlights!) after. You know I'd love some MessyOD-defined-Hearthstone-meta (Kappa). :)
Thanks for you ideas. I like the Dirty Rat part, it's also good with Brawl. About the arom thing, I think i need to cut out Gemstudded Golem and add Grommash Hellscream or something like that. Or maybe add Bring It On!
One of the challenges is that this list wants to do several things at once, while you would need to decide whether you want to go tempo or control oriented, although there may be some balance in between.
Another card I overlooked and could also bring a tempo swing is Corridor Creeper. It could be another free minion after a board clear or smart trades (as it also counts minions that die on your side). If you manage to drop earlier than opponent board clear turns, it can add that extra pressure from the start (in theory :P).
I’m a huge Control Warrior fan, and this looks promising. Love it! Really hope Geosculptor Yip works out, he’s super cool. Also not sure of Bladed Gauntlet, but hey it is like 2 Shield Slams that you have to take damage for so might be good.
+1
I think some card can be replaced by Grommash Hellscream for more burst potential or maybe a Scourgelord Garrosh with King Mosh for more removal.
Nice write-up on this deck, cant wait to give it a try! :)
