Kobolds and Catacombs theorycraft.
New Combo
Draw one natural Sorcerer's Apprentice. Use 2x Simulacrum on that Apprentice giving you 2 that DID NOT start in your deck. Use Leyline Manipulator on those 2 Apprentices making their cost 0. Play one full cost Apprentice for 2, the two 0 cost Apprentices and Archmage Antonidas for 7, leaving you 1 mana to use Molten Reflection on an Apprentice, giving you a Fireball that costs 0 because of the 4 Apprentices on board. Endlessly Fireball your opponent in the face.
The combo is less cards than the standard Exodia version and you don't have to run or complete the Quest. This frees up room in the deck for a couple Frostbolts to help against early aggression and lets us run Aluneth for more card draw to find the combo more consistently.
2.0 Changes
Cut the Babbling Book in favor of Medivh, the Guardian. This ensures we can override our weapon if we are going to overdraw. Also limits the number of low cost minions and lets us play Simulacrum more consistently.
testing this deck.. not sure If i'm just unlucky.... or I can't seem to win with it. I always end up needing 1 more card for the combo and it's the last or 2nd to last card in the deck.. seem to always be 1 turnish off from pulling it off.
I guess maybe a bigger question is how should I handle mulligans?
Hey how are you!, thanks for this list I have been using it but I have some thoughts I would like your opinion on! Aluneth is an Amazing card, but just not needed in this deck. My hand has always been pretty full because I come across cards that I need for the combo but can't use until the right time. Another example is getting two ice blocks. If you play an Ice block and have another in hand, you are stuck with it until Ice block is triggered (Not that it's bad but it is a pain). All the games I have won I have won hanging on for dear life lol, so I put in a Alexstrasza to help me in the late game Health wise. I only play this when I don't want an ice block to get triggered and still missing some cards for Combo. Taking out Aluneth also takes the need to have Medivh, the Guardian. This leaves one spot open that I use for Acolyte of Pain. This deck is really fun although I feel like it is going to have a lot more potential when I finally get a hang of it. Please let me know your thoughts, thanks!
I haven't actually tested this deck yet to see how the draw situation is. I'm glad to hear your are playing with the list and enjoying it so far. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I would definitely run 2 Ice Blocks, but cutting Aluneth and Medivh, the Guardian might be viable. I would replace them with 2xNovice Engineer or 2xAcolyte of Pain to draw but not overdraw.
-1 Medivh, the Guardian for +1 Zola the Gorgon
No one has mentioned the Gorgon giving a free Apprentice that didn't start in the deck. Might be something worthwhile, might make no difference at all.
How is it a waste when you literally get the same card back in hand? This isn't something (unless you're dumb) you do in separate turns. Turn 6+ you can easily drop Apprentice and Zola to get immediately refunded while having two bodies on the field now.
Zola the Gorgon just makes the combo cheaper which we don't really need to do. You will rarely, if ever, have all the combo pieces in hand and discounted by turn 8, and it's just one more card clogging up the deck that doesn't really do anything.
I think it's a pretty good idea, at least as an alternative. Zola the Gorgon can be considered as a Simulacrum [/card]with body. Though mostly situational, it could work when you have 2 original [card]Sorcerer's Apprentice but is missing another Simulacrum.
It can also be used (if really needed) to get another copy of the minions. I think it will provide versatility.
I'd love to test but I don't have enough dust to craft Archmage Antonidas yet which sucks.
-1 babbling +1 novice.
Nice suggestion, thanks. We might have enough card draw already but Babbling Book is pretty useless in this deck. Best case scenario you get another freeze effect.
this is looking pretty sweet. not sure which version of mage I want to run, but this is more within my price range than big spell mage... also if I get aluneth from the freebie then I'm laughing.
Another good suggestion, thank you. Burning the combo pieces would be pretty horrible. This deck doesn't run Cabalist's Tomes like Quest Mage though, so I'm not sure if we will have the same full hand problems. I did add a second copy of Molten Reflection to make the combo more reliable to find, and we could possibly cut that or the Babbling Book which is pretty useless.
