Come in and Warm your Frozen Boots by the Fire!
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Gunnolf, and I am originally from the Land Down Under a.k.a. Australia. I am an avid gamer that has acquired a real passion for card games, which originated from my humble beginnings as a Yu-Gi-Oh collector and eventually grew from my dabbling in Cardfight Vanguard and Buddyfight, until we reached the game we know as Hearthstone.
I've played Hearthstone since the days of classic, with multiple accounts on both EU and NA servers. Despite having reached the Rank of Legend and my own personal mentality of equating 'having fun' with 'winning', I am not really a fan of meta power-grinding & net-decking, not that there is anything wrong with that. Therefore, I enjoy thinking about new, cool and fun deck ideas that push boundaries while also allowing you to win and those are what I want to share with you guys every-time I post a decklist.
I have presently become a contributing writer to WILDHS and will be posting articles there on a semi-regular basis, regarding deck-archetypes the status of the meta as well as how to get the most fun out of this game even if you aren't a big spender. If any of this sounds interesting, then I highly recommend that you check out of the website, as the writers and the owner himself are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet with great in-game knowledge (link to be website can be found HERE). You can also follow me on Twitter for latest updates.
If you genuinely like my content and would like to see me produce more of it, then please consider supporting me on Patreon. This is by no means necessary but it will definitely help me out in the long run. Thanks for Reading ^^
Deck Introduction
Welcome back guys, today I have a very special deck for you in honour of the release of Marin the Fox. So when I first saw the card, I wracked my brain to try and see if there was any way in which the card could be used competitively. He has abysmal stats (6/6 for 8 mana) and a battlecry that can effectively be neutralised by silence or transformation effects. In essence, he is a very slow card that produces a win condition which can be interacted with by the opponent. So how could he ever be used competitively? Well, as I am sure people have figured out from the decklist, the answer comes in the form of an OTK Priest using the Divine Spirit and Inner Fire combo.
A Quick Thank You Before We Proceed!
Dear Readers,
Thank you so much for all your support of this deck and the other ones I have posted to date. It is because of your support that I am able to keep posting content, that I sincerely hope makes your gameplay experience (whether it is Ladder, Casual or just Completing Quests) that much more enjoyable. This list is considered as one of Hearthpawn's Favourite Marin related decks (the Link to Article stating as such found HERE) something which could not have been achieved without you. Thank you all once again and I'll see you all at my next deck posting.
Deck Inspiration
Funnily enough the card that actually made the idea pop into my head was Doomsayer. Anyone who played against any form of inner fire priest, whether it involved Djinni of Zephyrs, Deathlord or simply Purify, knows how game losing it can be to drop a high health minion that can be taken with Potion of Madness and used to smack you in the face for about 30 damage. This deck works in the exact same way, only instead of waiting for our opponent to play a minion we make it ourselves and use its absurdly high health to our advantage.
Playstyle
This deck plays very similarly to the Djinni of Zephyrs priest in so far as you need to stall long enough to assemble the combo and as such the deck has a reasonably high skill cap. However, I have made it a tad easier by including Deathlords which will allow you to develop a huge minion for an early push if you have the relevant combo pieces in hands.
Lyra the Sunshard has been included as a value generator and secondary win condition. However, if after extensive play-testing she appears to be a dead card most of the time, she will be cut in favor of something that fortifies the early game.
Combo Explained
Ok, so I am fairly certain that everyone reading this knows already how Inner Fire priest works. You have a minion, you buff its health with Divine Spirit and then use Inner Fire to match the minion's attack to its health for an incredible burst of damage.
Marin the Fox actually costs a fair bit of mana (eight to be exact) so in order to be able to use him in an OTK deck successfully we require only a single tick fromEmperor Thaurissan on two to four combo pieces, depending on what they are. Essentially:
-> 2x Radiant Elemental with one discount tick will allow you to complete the combo in one turn.
-> Marin the Fox + 2x Divine Spirit + 1x Potion of Madness or +1x Inner Fire with one discount tick will allow you to complete the combo in one turn.
-> Marin the Fox + 1x Divine Spirit + 1x Potion of Madness and +1x Inner Fire with one discount tick will allow you to complete the combo in one turn.
The combo is as follows: Play Marin the Fox, use Potion of Madness on the summoned 0/8 Treasure Chest and after buffing it with x2 Divine Spirit and Inner Fire, you smack them in the face for a total of 32 damage!
Ok so after playing quite a few games and gaining feedback from other players, I should state that most people do not interact with the chest AT ALL. So what you can potentially do, is just drop Marin the Fox on turn 8 and just do the full combo the next turn if you don't draw into your Emperor Thaurissan quickly enough!
Alternate Competitive Deck Building
(Read If You Want to be Playing a More Competitive Version Of This Deck)Ok guys and girls, after considerable play-testing and a lot of feedback from multiple players, I have decided to list a slightly different way to build the deck, as I would be remiss in my duties if I did not do so. The list below, removes the possibility of an uniteractable OTK as Emperor Thaurissan is being Cut. However, it has better early game consistency and allows you to completely demolish your opponent pre-turn 8 when Marin the Fox would become relevant thus becoming more Ladder Viable. The substitutions are as follows:
-1x Acolyte of Pain & -1x Wild Pyromancer / +x2 Zombie Chow
-1x Emperor Thaurissan & -1x Potion of Madness / +x2 Light of the NaaruNow, you are probably wondering 'what prompted me to consider an alternate means of deck building'. Well, the more games I played, the more I realised that people were not even bothering to kill the chest or damage it, therefore the one turn OTK with Emperor Thaurissan is quite overkill and simply delaying the inevitable as you could essentially just kill your opponent on turn 9 just by playing Marin the Fox on turn 8.
However, and this is the main reason why I have not altered the main decklist. Eventually, people will catch-on and start to play around the potential otk with the chest and when that happens, Emperor Thaurissan will once again be required to enable an OTK your opponent cannot interact with.
Author's Notes
This is a semi-competitive deck with a really fun, new and interesting twist. It is very close to an optimised version, however having said that it will still be prone to change pending additional play-testing.
Take your time to learn the deck. It truly isn't an easy one to master and if you are having trouble understanding the actual play-style then I would recommend watching any tutorial video that explains the premise and playstyle of Djinni of Zephyrs. Wowhobbs is actually quite proficient in such decks and my recommended go to for learning about combo priests if you are having issues (Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Wowhobbs, I just think the content he produces is quite entertaining and informative. Click HERE to be taken to his channel).
You No Break Chest. You use Chest to Break Face! SMOrc
(For those of you wondering, Shadowform came from Lyra the Sunshard before she was killed like always :'()
I enjoy deck-building a multitude of interesting decks that are both entertaining and Legend viable (with some odd Free-to-Play lists mixed in). So if you like this deck (or anyone of my other ones) consider leaving a thumbs up, as it really helps in the long run! :)
Thank you guys for all your support and if you have any suggestions, let me know.
I'm glad it's still as potent even after all this time. You would probably get even more wins if you cut Marin from the deck but sometimes it's just good to be different :D
after playing in WILD for few hours I STRONGLY recommend people making the alternative plays style changes mentioned in the guide.
Zombie Chow and Light of the Naaru totally makes the difference in current meta!
And thank you kind sir for reading through the entire guide! ^^
Doesn't work for me. Either I win early game with huge buffed minions (I run 2x Zombie Chow) or the game doesn't last long enough for me to draw/play Marin, let alone still have the combo pieces which are usually used on Deathlords or something.
Well he doesn't work every game.he is meant to work as an alternate win condition in the eventuality that your early game goes wrong. The most optimised version is of course the one that runs two Zombie Chows as listed in the deck description! :)
You do make valid points, however I will point out that I have included an alternative way to build the deck, that is less fragile and that includes Zombie Chow and thus is a tad more board centric. You'll be able to find all the relevenat information under Alternative Deckbuilding. I hope that clears things up! :)
Your suggestions are much appreciated and I will take them into consideration in future playtesting. I am reserved about getting rid of the Deathlords as you have to remember that Marin the Fox is an alternate win condition and not the primary one. Forcing yourself to pull off the combo will just lose you the game more often than not. I should get more playtesing done within a week and work on some changes in the meantime.
Thanks again for your feedback, I am sure your suggestions will prove valuable in improving this deck! ^^
If I am not mistaken, I believe the fixed the interaction in such a way that Djinni of Zephyrs no longer gains charge with Potion of Madness! :(
I never stated nor implied that I reached the legend rank with this deck, although it is very possible to reach the aforementioned rank with Inner Fire priest, assuming you are skilled enough in playing it. The alternate version with the x2 Zombie Chow and x1 Kabal Talonpriest, plainly listed in the deck description, is the more competitive version of the two lists.
All the decks that I have used to get Legend are clearly marked with the [Legend Tag], anything else is a viable/decent deck that is semi-competitive in nature. Kindly spend a little more time reviewing the text I have written as it does serve the purpose of informing you of the viability of these decks.
Unfortunately, if you have never played Inner Fire priest before (in particular the Djinni of Zephyrs version) then incurring some losses is only logical. Copy-pasting a decklist will not help you win if you don't spend some time actually familiarising yourself with the appropriate playstyle.
Edit: Dragon priest is an entirely separate archetype. If it chooses to run the inner fire combo as a separate win condition then that is what it does. This is a pure combo list and thus incomparable.
If you scroll down, there is a section labelled as 'Alternate deckbuilding possibility'. There I have included a way of building the deck that does not include Emperor Thaurissan. Hope that helps! :)
That moment when you do the combo, and opponent has Ice Block.
Oh God nooooo! Rest in piece dear sir! :D
I'm glad it worked out for you in the end haha. Sometime the issue with priest decks in general is mediocre draws, as I had the same issues last night. At first I went 0-5 and then 20 games later I only dropped a single game ending my run with 19-6 :D
This deck is amazing so long as your opponent never has anything you need to remove ever.
Yeah that is an issue that Inner Fire priests face in general. Thank God for Deathlords though, as they really enable the archetype! ;)
Hey dude, thank you for including your video as I am sure it'll really help players grasp the basic concept of the deck and in turn push them to win more. I'd make videos myself but I have no recording equipment so #feelsbadman. Great content, keep it up and hope to see you around! ^^
Thank you! Best of luck to you as well and keep up the good work too! :)
Fantastic! I've been playing the regular Inner Fire Priest in Wild, but this looks like an interesting variant with the cool new Marin the Fox card! I've taken out Lyra the Sunshard since I don't have her and will muck about with some of the replacements you've suggested in the comments. Thanks for another great deck!
Welcome back my loyal reader :). I just recently added a section to the deck description listed as Alternate Deck Building Possibility. If you're cutting Lyra the Sunshard, then you might want to go for double Kabal Talonpriest thus making your deck a little more board centric. But as always please muck about to your heart's content and tell me your findings! :)
Hey Gunnolf, another Aussie here, I've been following your decks for a while and they are really good, keep up the good work, about to try out this bad boy, i usually play Oil rogue / Mill druid sort of deck, but this looks like a perfect deck to try, I'm probably not the best with control but ill let you know how i go !!
