First off, who the hell is this new guy. Well, I have been around for a long-long time in hearth, but just haven't had the time ever to post.
This deck is not simple, it's not easy, but if you want true real results with having a lot of fun deciding crucially on every turn along with thinking about turns in advance give this deck a shot.
Those who post on here with epic 80% W/R's are just comical. Their sample size is with 20 games played from rank 20-15 range so they believe their deck defies all known mathematical variance and is the best deck ever created and their deck could even somehow finally solve Unified Field Theory.
This deck however was polished over many games and all living from within the fair early month grind stages of rank 10 to sub-500 legend. Yes, my proof is only a ~60% W/R played which is really close to a 65% according to my own programs, but unfortunately my deck-tracker doesn't show details from multiple accounts nor showing all of the numbed legged 3-hour long "Porcelain-Throne" toilet sessions that we are all guilty of playing on our phones.
This is a deck that has gotten me from rank 10 to rank 1 every season and QUICKLY and has the potential to take you into deep legend. If you want a quick grind that is fun to play and has some thinking and strategy behind it then pay attention and read on, if you want an easy grind to rank 1 then go play some mindless Jade Druid while binge watching Netflix and eating BBQ Lay's chips and I'm sure you will get there eventually.
The deck:
For starters, most of you notice this is a fusion hybrid of several mage deck types. Let me narrow down the uniqueness and why I chose these cards instead of taking away your time with useless information.
1. Why are their no Babbling Book and why only one Sorcerer's Apprentice in replacement of it. Well the answer is that it can allow you the ability to load more spells for clearing value. This allows you to manage aggro decks more efficiently, as well as having an actual mage minion that does REAL damage early with 3-dmg (or 4-dmg with hero power) not to mention allowing us the opportunity for a cheap spell or a cheap Firelands Portal
2. Why Gluttonous Ooze ? Well, this is simple. This single addition to my deck has allowed me so many wins it's not even arguable. With Medivh, the Guardian involved in multiple decks and the obvious Warrior and Shaman aggro value, this card is just insane. Let's face it, it has the potential to change the value of early-mid-late games in ~70% of circumstances for THREE (3) mana, enough said.
3. "WTF!!! 2 Kabal Crystal Runners and only 3 secrets are you on large dosages of bath salts right now or just insane!?" No, sorry to disappoint you guys, but neither. These are so viable in every situation that even forfeiting 1 or 2 secrets they still sustain their value for a 4 or 2 mana 5/5 that it is just disgusting. I can actually appreciate some arguments to certain mage deck models replacing these cards, but it's so situational that it doesn't make sense unless you are truly building a deck around not using these. @Surrender I am not hating on you bro, I just don't agree with the math ;)
4. Eater of Secrets well if you don't understand this then you should take a look at another deck that is better for novices or people that are newer to the game. The mage match up is one of the most common in the game right now and they all play secrets. Pally secrets are nearly 100% in every deck, so having one Eater in any deck is ALMOST justifiable.
5. Flamestrike well this is debatable, but through all of my aggro match-up sample sizes replacing this with Volcanic Potion was proving to be a success for me. With the early clearing of Sorcerer's Apprentice allowing early clear spells along with the minion damage and focus, it proved that by the time it got to late game I was either praying for a Primordial Glyph to get me Flamestrike or Blizzard. If you choose to replace it with Blizzard it can be justified with the freeze and hero power. But this is a tender subject in general with mages and is an interesting topic in itself.
6. Ethereal Arcanist this card has won me so many games I can't even begin to describe to you. Play it wise, play it smart and it will change the game. It also had the odd usefulness to absorb the other players turn completely as they are terrified of the +2/+2 ramping that they borderline OCD obsessively clear this minion. It is a deterrent even with no secret (although I am NOT recommend it to be played that way).
7. Medivh, the Gaurdian if you don't have a strategy for this card or understand the mechanics i.e. if you are coining out Medivh, the Gaurdian with zero spells while having 3 minions in your hand, well then you should try a different deck because you aren't ready for this type of game play yet.
8. Yogg-Saron. Hope's End I should copy paste what I said for Medivh, again if you don't understand when to use this card, or you blame this card for your losses then you don't have the strategy yet to begin discussing or even playing this deck.
Final Notes:
I would love to hear feedback for this. I imagine this is going to take a lot of heat and flack from non-legend players or even Rank 5-1 players expecting an easy flawless run that other post's promise. I was upfront in this deck and it's potential as long as you forecast and plan EVERY mulligan, EVERY turn, EVERY counter and focus multiple turns ahead then you will see quick results. It's not the easiest deck, it's not meant for mindless players/grinders, but it got me to sub-500 (late season) quickly with very few class substitutions.
Leave some feedback I am eager to hear it, if there is enough talk or if you have some sample sizing showing some good changes let me know and I will definitely check it out for the interest of us all!
Thanks for reading and goodluck in the felt.
Interesting choice. What secret did you decide to run?
Ice Block
Thanks! I appreciate that man, enjoy the deck!
Why no Arcane Giant?
Well the reason is that it isn't a real viable minion until 6-7 spells in and by that point your on turn 7 or 8 playing Flamestrike or Medivh or countering something. It is an OP card for sure, but I just couldn't find a place for it in this deck.
Instead of Yogg-Saron, Hope's End, wouldnt be Archmage Antonidas more consistent, in most games it will give u at least 1 Fireball?
p.s. also its like a soft-taunt that must be removed and gives u a turn to play Medivh, the Guardian
Could do, another Ice Block or Mirror Entity for counters and to aid in Medivh Vallet value. Pyros is also a viable option. One could even justify another Ethereal Arcanist as mentioned in my guide explanation of the deck it has huge obsessive clearing qualities to your opponent and even if your opponent doesn't focus on that turn it ramps up at a berserker rate however I have never play tested 2 Ethereal Arcanist. If you do try this combo could you let us know if it works well?
CrazyLP you asked a good question and asked it well. Here is my idea on Pyroblast it is 10 mana and you run only 1 of it. This means your odds of playing it viably by turn 10 (presuming you have Medivh) is roughly ~45% so, if you have the card in your hand early it disrupts flow, if you have this card in your hand and Medivh is late it is just a 10 mana 10 damage card which is really not that good. So, for this card to flow with flying colors i.e. having Medivh and Pyro in your hand before your weapon runs out of durability is around a 30% chance and that is being very generous with that % evaluation just to be the devil's advocate for my own point.
I'm not going to presume your rank Crazylp in anyway and I would never purely justify a player based of his legend status alone as some brilliant players just don't have the grind time to get there, but a lot of players struggling to get to legend or even sub Rank-5 is because they are focusing their game and deck around 1 or 2 play combos. If that is the case, as in the case for this, you could be a perfect minded player but your combo will only get there 25%-30% of the time and the other 75%-70% you will fall short. We all already understand Yogg he is a game changer if you are behind, Pyroblast is not really changing much other than a few scenarios where you win from that alone (low percentage) most times double fireball, or an 8-mana Pyroblast from Primordial Glyph along with a Frost Bolt or Hero Power gets you there much more efficiently. Or Primordial Glyph giving you Fireball, Frost Bolt, Arcane Missiles, etc.
Answer short: Medivh is a card that is played with the idea that it is a BONUS for your counters or aggro spells plays as it rewards a random minion of that cost. To devote 1 card of your 30 card deck and use it in combo with another 1 card of your 30 card deck and in a situational combo and justify it in a mathematical and statistical sense doesn't work that well, not to mention these combos don't include that you could have already won or lost having this combo in your hand before it even is viable.
So... focus on the deck as a whole, if you can do some odd things midish-lateish and have some cool combos that you can still recover from if went bad, or exploit if it went good then this is better then using 2 out of your 30 cards in combo of each other in a LATE turn environment because then it is a dream combo and those are just that most of the times, dreams. :)
This deck, like every other deck has their dis-advantages to each class. I hear what you are saying Ropeli, but what can be focused with a control warrior is that you wouldn't run out of steam if you properly planned the hand. Let me run an example.
It is turn 8 you've dropped Medivh however their are 2 big taunts on the board and his next turn he tosses out Primordial Drake for 3 big taunts and goes face. By turn 9 Medivh has granted a 5 mana minion with 5 damage if you use Firelands Portal combo you now do 5-dmg (6-dmg with Hero Power at turn 9) and you get 2 minions a 5-cost mana and 7-mana minion! That turns the game drastically. Point is if you are running out of steam with this deck and don't have minions it's either from one out of the two combos: 1. You ran bad and didn't have Medivh playing vs this specific deck, or 2. You didn't plan your cards in a combo form for this deck. Justifying an epic 1-card combo like Pyroblast with Medivh or something like that and winning doesn't make much sense, but justifying a multiple card combo in this case 5 cards that could help get you minions and regain control of this Warrior match up by destroying his minions with Medivh along with the combo of i.e. 2-x Firelands, 2-x Fireball and 1-x Flamestrike, will change this match up.
Don't just focus on a couple games with this match up, is it a counter most of the time, yes, but it can also be countered and will mitigate your losses if planned out correctly as you play into the match up. Much like in poker, just because you lose a match up or situation doesn't mean you lose over a life time, sometimes just mitigating the amount of times you lose in a certain match up i.e. control warrior and exploiting the times you crush in a match up, i.e. Rouge makes a huge difference in your W/R.
After all, if there was a deck that owned every match-up it wouldn't last very long as it wouldn't be much of a game to play ;)
Good stuff Ropeli. Keep killin it, again if you notice anything that is working for you for this deck let us know.
What do you do against combo priest with this deck without Alex?
My guess is with all the extra spells you just get rid of all the minions before they grow. Hard match up for most mage decks and I find myself having to offensive alex in a clunky manner most of those games.
Good question Leviathan, and I will answer your question for all of the other Alex questions. Alex is great in a lot of cases, but for ours it isn't really viable. We run 1 Ice Block only, why don't we run 2? Well, simply put because of our deck flow. Alex will not change the game by turn 9 or 10. By then you have most likely played Medivh unless you had bad variance (look up variance to those who do not understand what it is) and even if you don't have Medivh you will have plenty to counter. Dropping an Alex for a defensive isn't really going to do much for our deck, by then you will be playing either Yogg as a pray card to get back into the game, or Medivh with spells as an offensive.
I've had Alex in my deck in almost all of my mage decks before it was even a thing haha. But, Leviathan and others, just because Alex is a legendary card that is used or was used in a lot of decks doesn't mean it's great for mana/turn based flow.
KEY POINT: By the time you play Alex for survivability in this deck you will already be out of flow and that 15-dmg to bring you down for lethal next turn (permitted you have the block) will happen 8 times out of 10 scenario's. I would rather replace that 20% chance of Alex saving me with a card that can put me in the offensive and burst down or gain minions for focus.
Hey just wanted to know if i can swap in an alextrasza because i don't have the yogg. so would it be a massive loss or do u think that the deck still works as fine as it should? :)
If you don't have Yogg you can justify Alex to an extent, but keep in mind we only run 1 Ice Block. Another combo for you would be double Ice Block, Mirrors Entity, or even (as long as you understand mana/turn flow, Pyros. But, as I mentioned with @Leviathan's post it just isn't a flow pattern with this deck, it will only save you 20% of the time, vs you play something else for a greater edge to win on the offensive.
I am a believer in Pyros in quite a few mage decks to an extent as long as you understand the flow pattern. How this deck is formed is through flow. Very few times are you left empty handed with 2+ extra mana to even drop the original Pyros. Arcanologist flows into a spell, which flows into next turn Kir Tor/Spell, which flows into next turn Frostbolt/Hero Power or whatever (x)-combo. What I am mentioning is if you can find a viable place for a card substitution and can validate a flow pattern to it as well then I'm all ears. Find a good card substitution and get some games in and let us know how it turns out.
Remember in a deck like this it's not always about minions, but more of countering your opponents plays and exploding with damage late game. Pyros doesn't counter much until only at turn 6 and by turn 10 you most likely won't have time to play it, you will either be dead or would have won by then because you will most likely be playing Yogg or spells to counter or burst dmg them down. Dropping a 10/10 doesn't seem to be viable with no attributes like battlecry or deathrattle to help it, it's just a 10 cost 10 dmg minion at the end.
But play test it and let us know! Thanks for the feedback :)
Cool stuff Mrkangawanga! And I've dealt with this Ex-Girlfriends and it's better to run into a Yogg throwing out a Twisted Neither while your own board is maxed out with minions then having to deal with that...
Keep us posted on your sample sizing. If something is working we will build this deck up greater for the community.
I don't have Yogg, and I kinda "hate" it. It's a deck based on Yogg's RNG or it could have gotten you from rank 10 to rank 1 anyway?
Not sure what you are asking HereticBill. How Yogg got me to rank 10 to legend 378? Or how you don't like it's RNG.
If you don't have Yogg you can still add quite a bit in replacement for it. Mirror Entity or another Ice Block could be justified, tons of options. If you wanna discuss some let me know and we can bounce ideas off. But yes, this deck got me from Rank 10 to 378 (current) in very little time.
Thanks a lot for your feedback DoidaozHS, I am eager to see your results. Let me know if you see any deck changes or viability!
I just imported this deck and won 4 in a row lol. I have been looking over your point over Etheral Arcanist, should I keep it as a mulligan if he is so turned focused?
