Guide:
Mulligan:
Keep- Quest (obviously ), Doomsayer,Clockwork Gnome, Mad Scientist, Babbling Book, Novice Enginner, AI.
This deck is all about the draw, in 99% of the games you will finish the quest before drawing all of the combo pieces, so you need to go for the draws.
Using Primordial Glyph: the best cards you can get from Glyph are- Arcane Intellect (AI), another Glyph, Ice Barrier,Molten Reflection, Echo Of Medivh, Duplicate, and if you need to finish the quest at the moment then Cabalist's Tome. It is also great to get Frost Nova's, Blizzards, Removals, Cone Of Cold (for freeze, works like Frost Nova/Blizzard).
Match-ups-
Aggro- Warriors Druids and Zoolocks, all the same.
This match-up is a hard one, and you are going to need good RNG with your random stuff and your draws+curve to win this matchup. Basically try to get a big board and trade for their minions, get the Ice Barriers Quickly and get the Boardclears with Doomsayer and Glyphs+Babbling Books. In this matchup take from Glyphs Boardclears, and not tools to get the combo quicker. Good cards are: Volcanic Potion, Flamecannon, Cone Of Cold, and sadly even Arcane Explosion.
Against Pirate Warriors it is almost hopeless :(
Midrange+Control:
Here you keep the Board freezers for big boards, in this matchup I can only talk about noticing some things-
1) Paladins- Eye For An Eye is an option from Hydrologist that can destroy you.
2)Control Shamans run Devolve and Hex, so they can minimize your draws, do not use Duplicate against them.
3)Mages run Ice Block! if you can pop the block in the 1st turn and then kill them in the seconds you will win.
In this mach-up just draw as quickly as possible, and stay alive due to secrets and board freezers.
Some tips:
-When you run the combo, you still have +1 draw from the seconds turn so:
1)Fatigue will kill you if you are on 1 hp (opponent played around Block).
2)If you have 1 card remaining in deck and it's your last combo piece then use the combo NOW - you get the draw so you can play it in the seconds turn, notice you can play both Archmage Antonidas and the remaining Sorcerer's Apprentice/Molten Reflection in the same turn.
- Nothing can stop your combo- not Taunts, not 100 Armor, but Ice Block can! beware from other Mages, Beware from Priests and Rogues who steal cards from your deck/class cards.
- Clockwork Gnome can give you a card that Taunts your minions (as a defensive tool), and also a card that Stealths 1 minion, this is great for Doomsayer, because your opponent cannot kill it now, so it will wipe the whole board.
- Notice you do not burn your Quest Reward! if you play Glyph/Cabalists Tome/AI/Flame Geyser/Unstable Portal as your last non-created in deck spell to finish the Quest, your reward will be Discarded and you will lose.
- Always make sure you are not milling yourself.
Knight Of The Frozen Throne:
Quest mage may become OP in the new meta! If the new KOTFT control decks will succeed vs aggro and beat the aggro out of the meta this deck will become crazy good (it is countered by aggro and it is amazing versus control warrior and elemental mage and stuff like that).
Update 13/9: removed Giest due to seeing less Jade Druids (& seeing them play the Jade Idols at summoning instead of shuffle to play around Geist).
Added Blizzard against the Naga Giants deck (in case they don't have at the moment/run loatheb).
can u hit legend with this deck?
Probably, I think I will start playing this deck when I get to rank 5 and see what happens.
This deck is bloody good and quite fun to play. My thanks, to you. I wonder however whether Nexus-Champion Saraad has a place in it or is he just too slow?
I believe Nexus Champ is too slow for the deck, especially when you don't always want to use your hero power, and because of his high mana cost in comparison to Cabalist's Tome. Above all that, in control matchups he will almost always get removed immediately so getting only 1 card in lots of situations from him will be really depressing :C
I can't be 100% sure though, because I didn't really try him & I will not do so anytime soon due to the fact I don't own the card.
You should go ahead and try it if you think it should work- just hit a rank step (15/10/5) and try it there with the Nexus champion, get a feeling about how helpful he is to the deck.
Thanks for the deck! Been enjoying wild because there's less Druid, but with the Naga change now there's tons. Wanna run this to make them miserable. Couple thoughts:
1. Why Geist? Jade is usually losing to this deck without Geist since we have enough tools to win before the Jade cycle gets huge. We draw fast and stall the board before we get overwhelmed. Additionally, there's some rare instances where you can't play Geist because you're saving a spare part (obv if you play Geist the spare part is gone). I don't see Geist winning us enough games to be effective.
2. Why only one Blizzard? If we're trying to stall the game as long as possible until we draw combo I don't see why we'd cut one of the most important stalling cards in Mage's set. At the bare minimum, I'd cut Geist for a second Blizzard.
Awesome idea of using spare parts for this deck! I took the concept and decided to replace the Clockwork Gnomes with a Toshley. Toshley generates the same amount of spare parts at half the deck slots and is a bit stickier if you need to hold off the board during midgame. That extra slot can be used for extra draw, which IMO is most important for the deck.
Interested to hear your thoughts, and thanks again for the great write-up.
I'v stopped running this list in the last week because i was testing something, so when I last played there weren't giants yet & I saw lots of jade druids, + the matchup isn't really easy against them, if they know what they are doing it's around 50/50 maybe even favored to them.
edit: I did a Magma Rager meme OTK, it was really funny :DD, I filmed it & i'm thinking about posting it to youtube (my youtube channel doesn't really have vids yet :C).
Replace Simulcrum with Coldlight Oracle? I have 2 of them help ruin Highlander Priest
yeah, I really should update this page lol, I stopped running them :D
It looks great! Unfortunately, I don't have any Simulacrum. Another Ice Barrier, another spell generator like Shimmering Tempest or Spellslinger, Bloodmage Thalnos for card draw or something else can replace it?
Simulacrum can be easily replaced, you can put in a Novice Engineer + another Ice Barrier (if you are missing an Ice Barrier, put in another Novice Engineer).
I must say that at the moment i'm not even 100% sure that Simulacrum is even good in this deck, i'm still testing it, and at the moment this deck is really under powered because of the high percentage of Mill Rogues on ladder (or is it just me? seeing tons of them.)
I'm still thinking about replacing Simulacrum myself
Thanks! Sorry, my mistake, it should be an Ice Barrier - edited.
Any thoughts on this version with the quest and the version with Thaurissan?
The Thaurissan version is out dated and is really hard to pull of- it sucks
At what rank are you playing this deck?
currently 6, but I wasn't home for most of the month so I did not have time to play & rank up.Just came home from a trip :D ranked up to rank 2 :)
Hi guys I just posted a guide, if there is anything more you want to know/ask please write it here in the comments and I will add it to my guide.
ive been looking for the holy grail of otk, the testing is hard would like a guide
The Holy Grail of OTK is Combo Priest in my opinion, check that. It is one of the funnest decks i'v tried.
Up to 10 votes. Can we get a guide?
