My name is Coldstory and I reached legend early in the season with this control Jade shaman. Ever since release of Gadgetzan, Jade decks have been my favorite decks to play because I just love the play-style of playing giant Jade golems late in the game. Mid-range Jade shaman has been my go-to deck for a long time. However when I played mid-Jade shaman shortly after release of Un’Goro, I never quite had the win-rate I wanted. That’s when I decided to go for a more controlling version that plays 8 AOE cards between maelstrom portal, devolve, Volcano, and Lightning storm.

A few notes about my climb

  •  I used a version that played -2 Azure drake, +1 Belcher, and +1 N’Zoth to climb from rank 5 to rank 3
  • I played other decks to around rank 1, then down slightly to rank 2.
  • At rank 2 I made the change to two Drakes, then I went on a win-streak to Legend. I won’t lie, I got pretty lucky with matchups during rank 1. (I beat N’Zoth priest 3 times and beat a pirate warrior twice)

Why should you play this deck?

  • You like to play huge Jade Golems and other big minions
  • You like to annoy your opponent with all the board clears in this deck
  • You want to play a control deck that can also win by playing Jades on curve
  • This deck generally isn’t vulnerable to Devolve, as Reincarnate shaman can be
  • Great matchups against Reno mage, Priest, Egg druid, and Reincarnate control shaman

Why shouldn’t you play this deck?

  • You like to play faster games
  • You don’t know how to navigate Control vs. Control matchups.
  • Bad matchup against Freeze mage. Renolock and Midrange paladin are also incredibly annoying.

A little more about this deck

  • the deck plays 2x Maelstrom portal, Devolve, Lightning Storm, and Volcano. All of this AOE enable us to be more passive in the early game and still come back on board. That doesn’t mean we don’t curve out in the early turns, though.
  • Maelstrom portal is good against pirate warrior, egg druid, and Paladin. It also clears any small minions left by Devolve.
  • I love Devolve. It lets you deal with difficult board states in control matchups, and sometimes it’s an instant win against inner fire priests and Egg druids
  • Volcano is just a board clear that can also act as a single-target removal. You don’t know how good it is until you try it or have it played against you.
  • Lightning storm is very good against Egg druid and Paladin. It can often be a coinflip against wide Shaman boards because of 3-health minions, though
  • At first I had 2x Mistress of Mixtures instead of 2x Golakka crawlers. Mistress of mixtures wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. Golakka crawlers are much more swingy and game-winning against Pirates.
  • Pirate warriors were by far the most common aggro deck on ladder, but Egg druids and Aggro shamans also run a few pirates for Golakka crawlers to eat.
  • Stonehill defenders almost always gives you a good taunt. If you don’t know, Shaman taunt minions have an offering boost. The Shaman taunt minions are Hot spring guardian, White Eyes, Earth elemental, Thing from Below, and Al’Akir the Windlord. All of these are quite good.

Vs. Pirate warrior

It’s important to draw some combination of Jade claws, Maelstrom portal, and Golakka crawler. It’s also important to have a turn 4 play: Jade lightning is preferred, but Jinyu is also good. Other than that, just try to stabilise the board then taunt or heal up. Not much to say.

Keep: Hard mulligan for Jade claws, Golakka Crawler and Maelstrom.

 Vs. Druid

You have to assume Egg druid. In this matchup you’ll probably curve out as best you can early on, then kill their board with a Devolve and other AOE. Egg druids have no burst, so if you clear their board you win. This is a really favored matchup. If it’s Jade druid, the Druid will out-Jade you nine times out of ten.

Keep: Jade claws, Maelstrom, Golakka crawler, Lightning storm, Devolve

 Vs. Mage

The most common archetypes are Reno and Freeze mage. No matter which it is, you want to keep your minions in mulligan then try to pressure. If it’s Reno, you can pressure if you want but you’ll probably have to wait until your Jades get too big for them to handle. You lose if they get some minions on the board and you can’t deal with them. Try to get the best effect out of Hex and Devolve, and keep N’Zoth in mind. If it’s Freeze, there’s not much you can do except try to lethal as soon as possible and draw into your Jinyus (lol)

Keep: Jade cards, Stonehill defender, 5 drops if you have early minions.

 Vs. Warlock

The most common archetype is Renolock, which I think is unfavored because they have so many answers but I’ve yet to queue into this matchup enough to really say. If you stick your big minions onto the board, you probably win. Past turn 7, you should try to stay ahead on board at all times. If they get a safe Jaraxxus you lose.

Keep: Same mulligan as Mage.

 Vs. Paladin

Most paladins I saw were midrange, usually the “dude” deck, but a couple other archetypes as well. You need to draw into your AOE’s in the early game. Later on, hopefully you will be able to stick something they can’t deal with, but otherwise this matchup will probably drag on for a while. Many of these decks cut Aldor Peacekeeper, so you don’t need to play around it.

Keep: Hard mulligan for Jade claws and Maelstrom.

 Vs. Shaman

Shaman is a mixed bag with Aggro, midrange, and control all being viable. Since the mulligan for Aggro and Midrange being the same, mulligan for those two. With so many AOE’s like Volcano in the deck, it’s not too difficult to clear the board given enough time, but make sure not to take too much damage and play around Bloodlust if it’s midrange. Against Control shaman, you want to be greedy with your hexes and devolves.

Keep: Jade claws, Jade lightning, Devolve, Golakka crawler.

 Vs. Priest

I didn’t have much trouble outvaluing control priests. Once again, this matchup comes down to not overextending, and making smart use of your removal. The other big priest archetype is a more aggressive Inner Fire priest. You should be favored against that if you draw into your Devolve.

Keep: Devolve, Jade claws, Jade lightning

That’s it!

If you have any questions about the deck, feel free to ask.

N'Zoth/Y'shaarj Ramp druid (I reached 6 legend with this deck at the start of MSoG and it should still be a decent deck.)
