Why the name "Deathfire" ?
It's a mix of "Death" from Deathrattle and "Fire" from the Fire-related Elementals this deck is based on. So just refer to that archetype as "Deathfire", mainly because it sounds so awesome, but also for my ego. (XIII™)
What is The Caverns Below's activator ?
The Flame Elemental, given by Fire Fly and Igneous Elemental.
What are the ways to activate it faster ?
Useful cards to help completing The Caverns Below faster are Shadowstep and Shadowcaster, allowing to bounce the Flame Elemental. With luck, Bloodthistle Toxin also has that effect.
Also with luck, Mimic Pod and Barnes can give other copies of Fire Fly or Igneous Elemental. Spiritsinger Umbra with the latter also give 2 Flame Elemental in hand for the quest.
There are Bloodmage Thalnos, Loot Hoarder, and sometimes Kingsblood Toxin that can help drawing the Fire Fly / Igneous Elemental and combo options faster.
What to do after The Caverns Below is completed ?
When the Crystal Core is played, some Flame Elemental should be on the board which all become 5/5 due to the quest. Fire Fly thus helps to swarm, literally giving two 5/5.
There is in this deck a lot of cards with low stats compared to their mana cost, which therefore benefit a lot from the Crystal Core : Bloodmage Thalnos, Loot Hoarder, Igneous Elemental, Xaril, Poisoned Mind, Barnes, Spiritsinger Umbra, Shadowcaster, Vilespine Slayer.
Among them, Barnes and Shadowcaster are especially cool because their effect will provide 5/5 cards instead of 1/1 ones. They are perfect in that archetype, after or before the Crystal Core.
A forgotten card is here for the main purpose of abusing of the Crystal Core once completed : Sergeant Sally. It allows a crazy 5 damages board clear and the combo with Spiritsinger Umbra shouldn't be underestimated.
In late game, N'Zoth, the Corruptor acts as the game finisher. There are 7 Deathrattles minions : Bloodmage Thalnos, Loot Hoarder, Igneous Elemental, Sergeant Sally, Xaril, Poisoned Mind. It's possible to get more Deathrattles with Barnes and Shadowcaster. Even after that nice board is cleared, the Deathrattles activate and other options become available, including the possibility to fill the board with a new wave of Flame Elemental thanks to the Igneous Elemental.
What are the other good cards ?
Backstab : Quick, grants an early removal and allows an easily activation of the Combo effect of Eviscerate or Vilespine Slayer. Necessary against aggressive decks, and just good overall.
Preparation : Speeds up the deck a lot, it's also a combo effect enabler and it makes spells like Eviscerate, Shadow Strike or Mimic Pod to cost 0. In addition, it makes Crystal Core cost only 2, which means more minions can be summoned at the same time you play it.
Eviscerate : A necessary removal that can be used to burst and finish a game. The Combo effect can easily be activated with Backstab, Preparation, Shadowstep, the Toxins or even a Fire Fly and Flame Elemental.
Shadow Strike : A great removal to handle the early game before the Crystal Core. It can also be noted that it can activate a 5/5 Sergeant Sally and that it's great against another Quest Rogue.
Mimic Pod : A lot of awesome incomes. Can be better than Arcane Intellect from the Mage class, or worse depending on the luck. As there is a lot of combos in the deck, that's a good card overall.
Tar Creeper : This deck needs to handle the early game against aggressive decks, which this card does well. It also has the purpose to activate the Tol'vir Stoneshaper. On Barnes or a Shadowcaster, it's still a 3/1 Taunt... or a 7/5 Taunt once the quest is completed !
Xaril, Poisoned Mind : It synergies well with Spiritsinger Umbra / N'Zoth, the Corruptor and is even good with Shadowstep or Shadowcaster. All Toxins are interesting : Bloodthistle Toxin to bounce Flame Elemental, Briarthorn Toxin with Sergeant Sally and to trade with all the tokens, Fadeleaf Toxin can be interesting to burst or to prepare a Shadowcaster, Firebloom Toxin is nice because this deck doesn't have that much removals, and finally the Kingsblood Toxin is good to draw the Elementals faster. An excellent card throughout the game.
Tol'vir Stoneshaper : As you have a lot of early game Elementals (Flame Elemental, Fire Fly, Igneous Elemental, Tar Creeper), it's just awesome on the curve and it's hard to remove.
Vilespine Slayer : Same as for Eviscerate, the Combo effect is easily activated. It acts as a huge minion removal to take the board in mid-game. Also good with Shadowstep and Shadowcaster.
Are there nice combos ? What are they ?
With Barnes : In the first place Sergeant Sally is a 1/1 so she is okay. The 6 other Deathrattles I mentionned above are also excellent with him. If the income is one of the Battlecry minions, Shadowstep and Shadowcaster can help to make it still worth it. Finally, if he summons Spiritsinger Umbra, the opponent will have to clear it or the next turn could be god-like.
With Spiritsinger Umbra : It's simple : more draw with Bloodmage Thalnos and Loot Hoarder, more Flame Elemental with Igneous Elemental, more Toxins with Xaril, Poisoned Mind, and a sick board clear with a 5/5 Sergeant Sally (plus two 5/5 on the board, guaranting the control of it). Plus, if it happens to be on the board when you play N'Zoth, the Corruptor... Well, I'm dreaming.
With Shadowcaster : On Fire Fly to have another Flame Elemental (or directly on the latter), on Igneous Elemental for the same reason, on Sergeant Sally to basically have a 1-mana cost one, on the token given by Barnes, and on Spiritsinger Umbra for quick combos... Later on, every card you copy is 5/5, making things like Tar Creeper or Tol'vir Stoneshaper worth it as well.
Side cards that can enter the deck :
Moroes, good income on Barnes, awesome with Crystal Core because this is a 5/5 Stealth (and thus is very hard to kill) and he will have a lot of value, giving another 5/5 every turn. Though, it's only good when you have The Caverns Below completed so it may be slow.
Gluttonous Ooze is great against Pirate Warrior, especially with cards like Shadowcaster or Shadowstep to really annoy them. It also works against Wicked Knife from the Rogue's Dagger Mastery or Blood Fury from Lord Jaraxxus, and some Hunter / Paladin / Shaman also play weapons so it's not a dead card in most match-ups. Since it's early game-oriented, you can cut N'Zoth, the Corruptor for it.
Golakka Crawler can be considered if there are too much pirates in the metagame, which is the case at the moment (Pirate Warriors, Quest Rogue, Aggro Druid...). So, if these are the match-ups you want to target, they can enter the deck. It's a great card to take the board against these decks.
SI:7 Agent works well with Shadowstep and Shadowcaster, it allows to take control of the board quite easily, as much against aggressive decks than against tempo ones.
Infested Tauren is nice against aggressive decks and can revive on N'Zoth, the Corruptor. Plus thanks to the Crystal Core, it's a 5/5 taunt that gives another 5/5 so that's pretty solid.
Fan of Knives is interesting against aggressive decks such as the Pirate Warrior or the aggressive version of the Quest Rogue. Plus, it gives a draw to help fiding Elementals or "combo" pieces. Put one instead of N'Zoth, the Corruptor or Shadow Strike.

THANKS FOR READING !
TLDR : Everything combos with everything, very coherant deck.
So I just got the quest card out of a pack (and too late to get 1600 dust for it :-) ).
This deck looks like more fun than the typical one - and it looks like it can still work post nerf...anyone tried it post nerf?
I crafted the rogue quest a while ago,but never used to make the actual rogue-quest cause i don't like the playstile.
Some time ago i decided to build this DF-rogue that seemed much interesting.
Well, first of all i didn't think that a rogue deck with 1 prep could work..i tested it with 2 preps but they managed to show up in bad moments ruining some games. In the end i decided to go for 1 as Xill's list
After some test i decided to take out both Tol'vir Stoneshaper and Barnes in favor of [card]Infested Tauren [/card] tons of games i arrived at turn 10 with some deathrattles on Nzoth counter and i loss cause none of em had actually taunt.
Talking about barnes..it didn't fit for me. Simply 60-70% times i played him i never felt it added the value i wanted in that moment causing some losses,i decided to go for the second shadow strike which worked pretty well against tons of matchups.
Actually wanna try a switch -2 Shadow Strike [/card] +2 [card]Fan of knives ,i think shadow strike is better for the meta right now but Fan is actually a card that could make the deck much solid (The deck suffers a lot from bad draws and card advantage) .
The deathrattle part of the deck seemed pretty inconsistent and imho still now is:
Spiritsinger Umbra works well with tons o deathrattles and we got cheap deathrattles that actually come first than the spiritsinger and (trust me it happened tons o times) whenever i managed to play the spiritsinger i didn't have deathrattle in hand and i had to wait 2-3 turns before seeing one.
Sergeant Sally I LOVE THIS CARD. I like it so much,in this deck can show some value..but i have to say that only 20 games over 100-150 it actually helped me as it was meant. The combo Spiritsinger + Sergeant 5/5 happened 10-15 times over 500 tests. A lot of times happened i was forced to play her alone as 1/1
Anyways it's a really funny deck which can actually win some games (i managed to go through rank 18-10 with this deck pretty easily).
Forgot to ask, what do you think with the quest nerf? Should we increase the card draw?
lose to almost every aggro deck with this one, hunter pirat war questrogue... you are just dead by turn 5-6.
Hey check out my budget Quest rogue ive been working on based on this deck!
http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/816066-quest-nzoth-rogue
With this deck you can pretty much bounce any card that has a 3 cost mana or less, if you start out with only or two bounces than your already set to finish quest by turn 5-6.
At 8060 mana cost to make the deck its worth the cost
The cancers below
Way more fun than aggro quest rogue.
Didnt have Sergeant Sally so I replaced her with Sherazin, Corpse Flower. Its been working wonders. It combos really well with the Flame Elementals, since you can cast some of those each turn to rez it whenever you want. You also get a corpse flower back every time it died after you play N'Zoth, the Corruptor which is really nice. You can also Shadowcaster it if you don't have any other targets for a second corpse flower. Just make sure you don't have Spiritsinger Umbra on the board, cuz it makes Sherazin, Corpse Flower go dormant when played.
Super Fun deck! I was playing the usual quest rogue and decided to try this and don't regret it!
This deck looks fucking awesome. That being said, any ideas for replacing Sergeant Sally?
I'd say [Moroes] since he has good synergy with the quest mechanic.
Yup, check the "Side Cards" section otherwise
I Really love this deck. It's somehow flexible. I don't have Umbra so I change him for vanish, and Thalnos for the new rogue legendary. It works, and I fell much better winning with this deck than the aggressive and mindless version of quest rogue.
Do you have good results with Sherazine? I didn't bother trying it, it didn't seem playable
Yeah, it's pretty good, I mean in this deck it's like 50-50, depends who you are playing. A Hunter kills you, but against some Exodia Mage they use some really good removal like frost bolt, some low cost minions, things like that, which is good since you can revive Sherazine easy sometimes. I normally revive this plant 3-4 times before the game ends.
Played against someone using this deck. I was playing elemental Shaman, I ate him for breakfast, I destroyed every minion he played and still sent him into the negative. He didn't even complete his quest until turn 9 and didn't get to last long enough to actually play it. I made sure that he regretted any dust spent towards this terrible deck.
Still angry about me ? You should get over it, kid
After the game did you go to his house? break a back window? sneak in and take some change from his dresser? Pee in the back part of his toilet (you know so when he flush pee come out)? Slap his mom? Punch his cat? Kick his dog?....im sensing a little bit of vindictiveness here buddy, this isn't the aggro version of the deck you might want to try a few "woo-sa's"
I've been tweaking with this deck for a while now trying to keep the core theme alive. I like this idea of a tool kit deck where you have some mini combos with cavern being there for either the god hand combo or the additional clock being added. After playing a few more games and cutting cards, rearranging cards was in a dilemma with myself on crafting sally but in the aggro matchups she becomes very helpful and by far my favorite card is Xaril and being able to use him. That's the fun of the deck now the drawbacks are the quest activation is on average slower and can be much slower. I've had games activating it turn 3-4 and again not drawing the cards until turn 9. The synergy with Banres is great but almost everytime I have that Loothoarder I wanted it to be a Novice Engineer even to bounce. You do win in different ways I agree but I think you would either need to go more toolbox or more on the combo side to really put it over the top seems that it's just missing that push. I'd love to hear back if you tried anything different with the deck or pm me so I can share some of my testing with you as this site is loadins slower than a drunk snail
Of course I've tried a list less deathrattle-oriented, but then it would be similar to what everyone already play
I didn't try to keep the core and to play with Youthful Brewmaster though, that might be something.
But I don't really find it hard to activate the quest, when I can't do it with Flame Elemental I just do it with something else
I only got 3 legendaries with my pre purchase, and got double hunter legendary and crystal cavern. Kind of cornered me into playing this deck. Ive always loved n'zoth and wasnt very hesitant to craft spirit singer to play a version of this deck. That said, im having way more fun playing this version than the vanilla one that got me 1 star away from rank 10 opening day. Only 4 games in and won 1. Still better than my win rate after people started to figure out what was going on. Very fun, i needed that thank you
