I am a Reno Mage enthusiast, and this has been my go-to deck for a while now. I'm proud of it, because it is different from many Reno Mage lists that you see on ladder these days, and it still performs relatively well. This deck really goes for value. It is a minion-centric list, with an added emphasis on Discover effects.

Let's get right into the card choices...

RENO SHELL

All of these cards see play in almost every Reno Mage deck for reasons that have already been well established.

CURATOR CARDS

Cards that are not commonly seen in Reno Mage. Most of these are discover minions, others are there just because they have good synergy with the deck. I'll give some brief explanations...

  • Jeweled Scarab - So here is our first discover minion. Mages have some pretty busted 3-cost cards (secrets, Frost Nova, Flamewaker, Soulcaster) and the neutral card pool isn't too bad either. Jeweled Scarab is nice because it can help you smooth out your curve, or it can be used to hunt for an answer to a tight situation.
  • Netherspite Historian - This deck has 3 dragons in it, so it is not too hard to trigger her discover effect (especially if you end up with Alex in hand early game). If you draw her and don't have a dragon activator, you can hold her until you do... this deck runs plenty of other low cost cards, so your options aren't limited. Useful for discovering a second win-condition.
  • Coldlight Oracle - Card draw is rarely needed in this deck. Oracle was put in because 1) there are dragons and a beast in this deck, so I decided to just go ahead and complete the Curator package, and 2) it is actually a legit anti-reno tech. In the Reno Mirror, your opponent will often have a full hand, so you can use this guy to mill him a bit. Just be careful not to mill yourself, too. Other than that, I'd be careful about using him unless you need to dig for an answer.
  • Twilight Drake - Since many of our early-game cards replace themselves when they are played, our hand size is generally pretty large on turn 4, so Twilight Drake often gets played when he's nice and fat. Also has Netherspite and Curator synergy.
  • The Curator - Decent taunt, draws cards, thins your deck... personally, I think he is woefully under-utilized. Careful not to mill yourself when playing him, though.

Why not ...?

  • Babbling Book - I like this card, but he is rather inconsistent. Sometimes he gives you a game-winning spell... but other times you just get "meh" or unusable cards. Other than that, his body is negligible, and he screws up revive potions.
  • Arcane Intellect - Replaced with Coldlight Oracle. With so many card-generating cards in this deck, Arcane Intellect is often a dead card (else you mill yourself).
  • Manic Soulcaster - This is the 31st card. I wish I could fit it in this deck, but there's nothing that I'm willing to cut for it. I may eventually re-introduce it to the list, but so far, I've done well without it. I miss the value it can generate in the long-game, though. At least it can be discovered by Jeweled Scarab in some cases.
  • Emperor Thaurissan - Usually used to get discounts on spells for Tony. Not really needed in this deck.

MATCH-UPS

Pirate Aggro - Has all the early-game control cards of a typical Reno Mage. Mulligan for low-cost removal spells, Kazakus, Reno, Doomsayer, Acidic Swamp Ooze... prevent as much damage as possible, survive until you can heal, and then just win.

Jades - Can out-value Jade decks with Medivh. They don't run weapon removal (usually) so you can get off some pretty swingy turns with Atiesh + Kazakus potions. Our deck has more minions than they have removal... so if you can get them on the defensive right out of the gate, they will eventually run out of removal, and their Jades will not be big enough to deal with our late-game.

Dragon Priest - This list is slightly better against Dragon Priest than other Reno Mage lists. There are four 4-attack minions in this deck (two of them have taunt, two of them are Dragons), so this gives us an edge. Also, this is a matchup in which I can usually get some mill value out of Coldlight, because Dragon Priest will often have a near-full hand.

Reno Mirror - These are the most fun matches, in my opinion. Reno matches usually come down to pure value, and this deck has a lot of it. Beware the Swamp Ooze. Many people will not hold onto it against a mage, but they may pick up that you are playing a Medivh version of the deck (Antonidas versions don't typically run Flame Lance), so be prepared not to get much value out of Atiesh. Since these games are typically slower, go for greedy Brann discovers. Mill some of their cards with Coldlight if given the chance. Save Alex for after they Reno. If they play Doomsayer, try to Dirty Rat out their win-con/Reno (likewise, don't play your Doomsayer in case of Dirty Rat). Basically, there are tons of things to take into consideration in this matchup, and you have to constantly be reading them to figure out what they are trying to accomplish, and how to prevent that. Very fun games.

Miracle Rogue - These games are a real toss-up. They mostly only have 1 or 2 win conditions (big Edwins/Questing, or Leeroy + Cold Blood burst), so if you have answers to those, they just run out of steam. Likewise, if you fail to draw your answers, then you die pretty quick.
