Hello guys, I've recently hit rank 1 legend on EU with 30-6 record in the final run and I'd like to share some knowledge with anyone that would like to try this awesome deck!
In general, this version performs really well vs. all Patches decks (especially Shaman and Warrior, but it's fine against Rogue as well despite most Reno decks struggling vs. Rogue in general.
It's still super strong vs. both Reno and Dragon Priest and Control Warrior and you are also slightly favored in Reno Mage match-up. Your bad match-ups are going to be most Druids and mirror in case your opponent runs the Leeroy-Faceless-POW combo. Hunter and Paladin don't really exist on high ranks and you should do well against them simply because of currently lacking overall power level of these classes.
Cards I am not running which are commonly used:
Combo (POW, Leeroy, Faceless) - all these cards are next to dead when facing Patches decks, so by not having them you improve these match-ups a ton. Combo is a very good way to close out longer games, but Jaraxxus can do the same job and you only invest one card, so you got two more slots to use. Separate pieces are OK in some situations (e.g. dealing with big minions) but I feel they are just not doing enough. I definitely suggest including the combo if playing mirrors gives you headaches otherwise. :)
Ragnaros - I prefer running as few win conditions as possible in order to get decent early/midgame, it would make a great addition if there were a lot Mages, Locks and Druids in the meta.
Sylvanas - Another expensive minion that's decent vs. slower decks (Reno Lock and Druid), although it's super awkward against Rogue since they can Sap her and control Shamans are running Hex, so the meta is really Sylvanas-unfriendly at the moment.
Shadowflame- Almost auto-include according to many players, but with absence of Power Owerwhelming and also Sylvanas this card performs much worse. Without POW I believe Hellfire, Twisted Nether, Abyssal Enforcer and even Felfire Potion are better AOE choices.
Blastcrystal Potion - The problem with this card is that destroying a crystal really hurts you unless it's turn 8-10. Clearly the deck really needs a way of handling big minions, but I feel Corruption serves this purpose much better.
Felfire Potion - I've played this card a lot over Abyssal and the only match-up in which it seemed better was Rogue, where dealing with 4 toughness minions is a huge deal, while against everything else an extra 6/6 body is totally worth investing an additional mana.
Spellbreaker - If I had to add 31st card, this would be the choice, he is great vs. Rogue (Edwin is quite an issue) and in Mirror (Twilight Drake, Faceless Shambler), but he is underwhelming vs. aggro (it's way too easy to kill for a 4 mana card) and not great against Mage, Priest and Druid.
Cards I am running which might seem argueable:
Mountain Giant - best card in match-ups that you go turn 2+3 Life Tap instead of developing board early. It's generally uncastable vs. Patches decks, but same goes for the likes of Ragnaros, and Gaint is simply faster and more threatening when facing controls.
Faceless Shambler - In my opinion it's an auto-include if you run Mountain Giant. With it you can go double 8/8 on turn 7 against slower decks, which is incredibly hard to deal with.
Defender of Argus - Having access to more taunts is often game-defining vs. all aggro decks, especially Pirate Warrior. It's also important to have a couple taunts ready so you don't die after playing Jaraxxus, which leaves you unable to heal back to 30 with Reno.
Soulfire - Probably the worst card in current version, but it's still providing good tempo swings since there is a number of appealing targets in the meta (Azure Drake, Tomb Pillager, Frothing Berserker, Totem Golem, to list a few) and you can fill the curve with it really nicely.
Jaraxxus - Since I've cut the combo I was looking for a reliable win condition, a thing the Eredar Lord is insanely good at. You beat many decks senseless (Priest, control Warrior) with this card alone. It's also decent against Mage, since burning you down from 15 is not that easy for them (especially if you bait out a Fireball earlier during the game) and it's literally impossible for them to outgrind a two-mana 6/6 every turn.
Corruption - No it's not a joke. When thinking about the meta, I felt Reno Lock has 2 problems: it has really hard time removing cheap, overpowered minions (Trogg, Totem Golem, Small-Time Buccaneer etc.) and after the nerf of Big Game Hunter, it's really difficult to deal with big threats like Edwin, Giant, Ragnaros, Flame-Wreathed Faceless. Obviously if you use Corruption, these minions will connect to your face once, but if you imagine all the possible scenarios, the card fits in pretty nicely and my winrate significantly improved after including it in the deck. (Over 80% winrate during climb that early in the season is really rare for me)
That's all for today, happy Tapping to everyone who decides to try this brew out!
Can you explain what makes Jaraxxus the win condition? Whenever I use him near death, I just get bursted down before I can actually do anything :\.
6/6 for 2 mana every turn and a 3/8 weapon bro
What can i replace demon wrath with?
I'm f2p and don't want to waste 700 gold on one card
great question!!!!
+1
Im trying out Spreading madness
I currently have good results incorporating http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/326-senjin-shieldmasta
What is the winning condition of this deck?
he kind of says it in the description. against control it's jaraxxus. against agro you just out last them and have bigger minions in the late game (he doesnt discuss this but it's the default win condition of control vs agro)
It'll be a glorious day when Reno is nerfed. This card is a cancer and last salvation for the poor player.
I dont blame anyone for exploiting it but once you add it to deck it negates the use of practice or skill.
Step 1: build a deck with single cards (and Reno)
Step 2: get you butt kicked for most of the match, give up board control and force opponent to use up all removal
Step 3: wipe opponents board with Twisted Nether and cast Reno
Thats some deep to the bottom of the ocean strategy right there.
Now, am I necessarily trolling or just pointing out an obviously OP exploit in the current Meta?
How to play using this deck against jade druids?
I just crushed a jade druid a few minutes ago. He ramped early and copied his jade idols, but had to spend all of his removal on my minions (emperor, twilight drake, etc.). Corruption saved me against an Earth Elemental he discovered, and Soul Fire helped me push lethal in the end. Really enjoying this deck as I dislike the Leeroy + Faceless combo (both in facing it and in trying to hold onto them to win the game).
Recently won a long game against jade druid. At the moment i thought i'm lost (reno already played, 13 hp left) opponent didn't play against Twisting Nether, and played almost all his hand in one turn to make a full board with 6/6/,7/7,8/8,9/9 etc. So next turn after Twisting Nether he didn't have any playable minion/golem in the hand and i managed to play discounted Jaraxxus with HP same turn. This was turning point with another HP + Shambler + something else turn later.
You treat him like any other player. Get your butt kicked for most of the game, wipe his board and then cast Reno. Once opponents removal is gone, its over. Not a very sporting deck
Kabal courier seems to be better for longer matches. MC Tech is helpful when opponent is flooding the board with jades or pirates. K.C. seems more like a mini Kazakus.
I've been playing this deck for awhile with one change, -1 Soulfire and +1 Kabal Courier. Discarding a random card can be game losing, and too often I'm put into spots where I just lose the game on the spot because I'm forced to gamble.
With less control cards and more of an anti-aggro focus, facing pirate warrior and hyper aggressive decks is cake. But honestly the control match-ups are fun. At first it might seem a lot harder, but you really have to have a real plan with what you are going to do. Sometimes you need to mull for just straight up early board with Mountain Giant, Twilight Drake, Faceless, but sometimes you can't, and then you're on the Jaraxxus plan. You really have to plan out how you are going to go into Jaraxxus later, because you pretty much need to have the initiative and a clear board if you're making a comeback.
Just playing the time-buying game won't work without a plan. It can be easy to just slam-jam a Reno vs Aggro and gg, but you'll have much more victories if you have an idea what your win condition is going to be. You really need to be mindful of when to play for pressure, and when to bide time to set up a better position. Waiting around forever can lose you to combos if you don't make enough threat. Playing what tools you have just to have something on the board can also lose you the game if the minions are too weak and you don't get the right value out of them.
Here's some card notes:
Thaurissan: Just slamming him down because you have a mittful of cards can have little impact if you aren't hitting the right ones. The most important card to hit is Jaraxxus, because you can immediately start the 6/6 pain train. Second most important is Brann + Battlecry minions.
Corruption: Just damn good, so much more mana efficient than blastcrystal, and if you plan your taunts and heals, it saves your ass since you can actually play stuff alongside it early on. Also good + turn 2 / 3 dirty rat.
Twilight Drake: If you can protect him vs priest, pretty much unkillable, even better than mountain giant because he can't shadow word or dragon potion him.
Kazakus: I honestly think I make the most mistakes with this card, you need to plan out your turns. Sometimes it's just a desperation play and saves your ass, but you want to consider what you have in your hand and deck and what your win plan is. Also keeping track of what minions have died, what your opponent has in their deck. It can feel important to play him, but the 3/3 body doesn't do much and if you are only getting a single non-brann kazakus, you are essentially paying 4-8-13 mana to generate and play a spell.
Jaraxxus: Yesterday I died like 3 times to Netherpsite HIstorian into Nefarian into Sacrificial Pact.
The Big Guys: Drake, Mountain Giant, Faceless, Abyssal, Bruiser, Thaurissan. Keep vs slow decks to smash face.
The Small Guys: Voidwalker, Impgang Boss, Peddler, Farseer, Refreshment Vendor, Acidic Ooze. Keep vs pirates.
Dirty Rat: Good with Corruption, or Twisting Nether turn 10. Sometimes you just need to hope vs. agressive decks.
Honestly good deck, I think there is a good margin of decisions and skill over renomage which is more casinostone.
Thanks for this man, I will try your setup because I really dislike the idea of Soulfire.
Also, loved your explanations, agree with everything (LOL'd at the Jaraxxus thing)
thanks man! This helps, I always felt a bit sad after playing Soulfire.
just had no idea what to replace it with + your card notes help me to understand the deck better!
Stancifka should add Mukla Tyrant od the Vale to this deck. With Brann he can get aditional 4 bananas every game!
1 or 2 cards can seemingly make a world of difference in a deck. I personally think that corruption is a game changer. I'm not crazy about mountain giant though. It will just get removed 99% of the time before it can do anything. What about Ragnaros instead?
