*This deck was made in an earlier season, with a different meta. I've noticed that it doesn't fair well with current decks. Please consider using traditional Dragon Priest instead.*
On my journey to finding a faster priest deck, I seem to have hit the jackpot. This is dragon priest, but with a more consistent early game. The goal of the deck is to curve out with overstatted minions, keep board control, and gradually push for face damage. You will find that many games end before turn 10.
I'd also like to note that this is only my second time hitting rank 5, with the last time being 5 seasons ago. I'm actually surprised how easily I was able to rank up with this deck, with a win streak from ranks 11-8 that I just wasn't able to achieve with other decks in past seasons.
Mulligan
In your starting hand, aim for Northshire Cleric, Twilight Whelp, Wyrmrest Agent, Faerie Dragon, Blackwing Technician, and Kabal Talonpriest. Against Shaman, Warrior and Rogue, keep Holy Smite to deal with Small-Time Buccaneer as well as other early game drops. Keep Twilight Guardian if you can curve out well.
If you keep cards that need a dragon to activate their battlecries during the mulligan, make sure to keep a dragon so that you can actually use them. This is a general rule for dragon decks.
*Notice the amount of cards that are good to keep. A good starting hand should come often.
Why is (card) in the deck?
Wyrmrest Agent and Twilight Guardian - Overstatted taunts that help immensely against aggro decks. You'll usually want to only play these if you can activate their battlecries.
Holy Champion - IMO one of the most underappreciated cards. Allows the deck to push for face damage. This card can be preettty insane when used with Holy Nova, allowing it to gain more than 5 attack sometimes. It's also a good play on turn 6 to drop Holy Champion and heal something else.
Holy Nova - A boardclear that can be played earlier than Dragonfire Potion while still having synergy with Holy Champion and Northshire Cleric. The fact that it heals your own minions too helps to keep minions alive on your board. Against decks that you don't really need board clears for, like Renolock, sometimes it is good to just play Holy Nova just for the mass heal rather than to kill an opponent's minion.
Drakonid Operative - Easily one of the best cards in the new expansion. It's a 5 mana 5/6 with the potential to give you a card that's good for the current situation. Sometimes you'll find Ragnaros the Firelord and have lethal next turn; sometimes you'll pull an Acidic Swamp Ooze and destroy that upgraded 4/2 Fiery War Axe. It's also not a bad play on turn 5 if you don't have a dragon.
Faerie Dragon - A good hard-to-remove 2 drop that works well with Kabal Talonpriest.
Defender of Argus - Against aggro decks, it can save a lot of life. Against control decks, it's good for pushing face damage.
Why isn't (card) in the deck?
Blackwing Corruptor - You'll usually want to already have board control by turn 5, so the battlecry isn't as effective as it seems in this deck. 5 mana for a 5/4 body isn't ideal either.
Dragonfire Potion - It doesn't serve the purpose of the deck as well as Holy Nova can. Many of the minions you play - notably Blackwing Technician, Kabal Talonpriest and Holy Champion - get damaged by this card.
Thanks for looking at my deck. I will answer questions in the comments.
Fun deck, especially against aggro.
Really solid deck, especially for the dust. Went 18-12 in three hours. Thanks for posting!
I'm not sure about the Defender of Argus - it was only good once in those runs. Might swap it for something with more value.
Dragonfire Potion definitely wouldn't feel right, though. This deck is too fast and you should be controlling the board just with minions.
Terrific deck. Perhaps the single best budget deck I've ever seen. It is more than capable of running up the ladder, same as decks that cost 4 or 5 times as much dust.
I never would have thought to play any Dragon deck without Netherspite Historian ... but having played the deck a couple of dozen times now, I am hard pressed to conceive of any card substitution that would be worth making. It is practically perfect in every way.
No Brann? I understand you want to cut under-statted minions from the deck but 15 out of 21 minions have battlecry. It could probably make this deck more viable toward late-game decks.
But I'm sure you've thought about this already and decided against it. Maybe include your reasoning under your "Why isn't (card) in the deck?" section?
If I were to include Brann, I think I would replace Holy Smite. I'll try it out and see how it does.
Against druid it's 0% win rate.
Tested in casual and then at rank 13,
28 Win Streak
Only loss was against miracle rogue IMO the worst matchup for the deck.
nice deck. Ignore the complain guy about adding greedy card on deck. They just pay to win guy. Zero knowledge about deck building. They just ththink add more legendary= auto win vs incomplete deck or win rate will increased.
Man, thanks for the deck! Some people just don't get it. Not anybody can always pay for packs or play all day long (because of work) or is just new in the game. For these people, rank 5 it's really an accomplishment! After a new expansion, those who can afford to pay for packs always have a great advantage and that's why your deck is awesome. It's cheap, competitive and easy to play with. Great job. #GreetingsFromBrazil
I wouldn't suggest placing Wrathion in your deck. For the simple fact, That if you are gonna play him the chances of you drawing more than one card are pretty low.
I would say Hungry Dragon would be a better replacement than Wrathion.
its not a dragon and its 2 mana more, the deck is already expensive in mana and rly depends on the mulligan to win so no its rly rly bad as a remplacement
The inclusion of more early game as well as Holy Smite allows the deck to more consistently beat aggro decks over regular dragon priest. It could also just be for people who want faster games.
I mean I don't have Confuse, but you could definitely try it. I see your point about minions having high health due to Kabal Talonpriest and Power Word: Shield. However I honestly think it wouldn't be that good. There's already Holy Champion to be a heavy hitter.
I was thinking of that too. Right now i swapped Defender of Argus for mass dispel, just to see what happens. Thought it helps against auctioneer.
No netherspite historian?
The deck aims to play the highest-statted minions each turn, so Netherspite Historian wouldn't be the best. Compare it to Wyrmrest Agent on turn 2. It might be good tech against control decks, however.
Is it possible to replace whelp and technician? I dont have BRM and dont want to buy it since its about to rotate out
You would be better off playing another deck, as Twilight Whelp and Blackwing Technician are key tempo cards.
is there a good replacement for the guardians? I know they are kind of staples for dragon priests, but I just don't have that extra dust to make them
