Hello everyone, my name is Lylsky, player from Poland currently residing in France.
Since it's been introduced I've been a gigantic fun of Dragon Priest archetype. Thanks to this I've been able to push my first legendary grind a year ago and had some good success with it for a couple of seasons.
Sadly the introduction of new expansions nerfed Priest like hell making it practically unplayable. Happily, the current meta situation seems to be bringing Dragon Priest back to life. It's a very good counter to shaman meta, which I'll explain in a small guide down below.
What I'm really excited about though is the december expansion, which I predict may be even be able to put Dragon Priest in Tier 1 list. But first things first.
Card choices:
Northshire Cleric - this card disappeared for some from the deck, but now is making it's comeback. It's a very good card to regain some tempo against some aggressive decks like shaman for example, since it'll make more useful to keep your own minions alive, give you more cards, and it can troll hard shaman's healing totem, because it will give you cards too!
Power Word: Shield - a must have in every priest deck.
Twilight Whelp - a core card in the deck. Powerful early game tempo card, dragon activator in a late game.
Netherspite Historian - I believe this card has a big potential if played on a good turn. Against aggressive decks you can smash her on turn 2 and try to get some good follow up for turn 3 (coin) or turn 4, like Twilight Guardian. Against control keep it for the synergy with Brann Bronzebeard to create massive value. If you're lucky and get Dream for Ysera you can get up to 4 dragons from one card which never lost me a game against control decks.
Shadow Word: Pain - a stample in every priest deck
Wyrmrest Agent - very powerful early game card, has a big potential of creating good value with Cleric thanks to its 4 hp.
Blackwing Technician - one of the best 3-drops we can currently get, very good anti aggro card.
Brann Bronzebeard - with so many battlecries in this deck the card is a must have to help create good value or sometimes just to soak some dmg in a critical moment.
Shadow Word: Death - staple priest card.
Twilight Guardian - insanely good 4-drop, a must have in any dragon type deck.
Azure Drake - yeah.
Blackwing Corruptor - very powerful card, perfect for trade'ing or creating some good tempo swing.
Holy Nova - with the addition of Cleric Holy Nova is a must have in this deck. Even if it only deals 2 dmg, 3 with Azure Drake, it's a powerful tool to help maintain your board and to get some extra cards with the help of the Cleric.
Book Wyrm - awesome removal, so many good targets, especially against shaman, but warrior as well. Removing Acolyte of Pain without letting him draw any card is huge.
Chillmaw - this card is mostly a meta tech, with so many aggressive decks is practically a must have, creates good body and clears a board. In a slower meta replaced by Entomb.
Ragnaros the Firelord - fantastic tempo card, can be used as a removal or just to push a final blow against your opponent. I think right now it's a staple, would prefer to swap Chillmaw and lose one dragon for Entomb than sacrifice Rag, which is a very flexible card working well against both aggro and slower decks.
Ysera very powerful late game card. Can create insane value thanks to its emerald cards and is a good trade tool, or in a critical moment to soak a Hex.
General mulligan strategies:
Against shamans, hunters, dragon warriors:
- always try to mulligan hard for early drops. Twilight Whelp, Wyrmrest Agent, Shadow Word: Pain and if you already have a dragon in hand Blackwing Technician.
- always keep Twilight Guardian in your starting hand.
- don't keep Power Word: Shield if you don't have a 1-drop in your hand, or a 2-drop if going second.
- Northshire Cleric if you have any early drops.
Against control decks (warrior, paladin, priest):
- don't keep one drops if necessary. Keep Wyrmrest Agent with some other dragons. Try to get 3-, 4- drops and play them on curve.
I will keep this post updated, I'll try to elaborate the strategies.
Thank you in advance for the upvotes and commentaries below the post ;)
Edit: Swaped Ysera for Entomb for better removal options on sticky minions.
not a single gadgetzan card?
I am so confused. I am trying to build this deck but i cannot find some of the cards. I am new to this game. Why can't I find cards when i search in game, either in my collection list or crafting list?
for example twilight whelp.... i don't see it anywhere in the game?
If someone could explain to me how I am supposed to find cards I would really appreciate it! I keep looking at decks on here but every time I go to make a new deck I can never make one.
Twilight Whelp can only be obtained by going through the Blackrock Mountain adventure. Cheers!
Solid deck. Started playing it preparing for the new dragons :)
Nice Deck <3 ty for sharing
love this deck: 13-2
I swapped a book wyrm for cabal. Extra 6 drop with no need for dragon synergy.
True. I ended up taking it out and adding a justicar truehart. In this meta, I seemed to almost NEVER use a book wyrm two times, so I am testing other 5-6 drops to see if anything is better. So far, I have actually had decent luck with the true hart, as the HP has either helped my hero live or helped me keep board control.
took both of the northsires out i find them useless. Put in a second entomb and a cabal.
Nice deck, looking forward to the next set where the dragons finally reign over the meta! :)
Just had some great games in which I ended up with two Eviscerate for an interesting damage output in dragon priest! VOD Double Eviscerate Dragon Priest

Hey, seems like a nice deck, have all the cards except Chillmaw , replacement?
i know it sounds crazy a bit but what can we replace ysera with?! :P
When in doubt always entomb first. Even with all the removal Entomb deals with the magic number 4-power drops like the opponent's Ysera.
Ysera is just very good if you intend to play any sort of attrition/control style game because she generates at least an extra card's worth of value (though each dream card is pretty situational and sucks when you don't get the one that matches your needs)

Glad you liked it :3 !
No entomb? Isn't that almost an auto concede to malygos decks?
I played dragon priest last season as well, almost got to legend with it, but i could never imagine doing that without an entomb or 2 to deal with the malygos decks. I'm pretty sceptical to how you're ever able to beat them. Also, I experienced Ysera to be a pretty dead card most of the time, perhaps substitute it for DeathWing? It's a great way to grind out the mid range shamans even further, since I experienced a decent amount of games going almost to fatigue against mid range shaman.
That's a possibility. However, I don't know what rank you're currently at. I heard there are a lot of malygos druids at the moment arround rank 5-6-7 because the best mid range shaman players have to get to legend before malygos druid can start the climb to legend (I heard, I don't have data to support this). I think you have some cool tech-choices you can do with this deck to adapt to what you're encountering on ladder. If you don't face malygos decks ofc you don't really need the entomb, but I still do like the Deathwing in this deck, if you're ever looking for something new to try in your deck, try Deathwing! Good luck with your climb.
yes it is
I think a solid argument against including Entomb against Maly decks is you should have enough board to clear the Auctioneer and when Maly is only ever dropped when the OTK is up.
Deathwing is almost always Hexed in those matchups and you don't have many draw mechanics (or usually don't) by the time you get to play him so recovering your hand is hard and really only good if they don't have a hand either but if you're both topdecking the Dragon decks are inherently worse.
