Boss Details

  • Location: Frostwyrm Lair (second and final boss/fifth wing).
  • Kel'Thuzad starts the battle with 45 Health and 20 Armor.
  • Frost Blast costs 0 mana and is on autocast at the start of his turn for Phase 1.
  • Phase 2 starts either immediately when you break his armor (you can take no further action) or at turn 11, whichever happens first.
  • At the beginning of Phase 2 he will summon two Guardian of Icecrown.
  • Chains costs 8 mana for Phase 2.

Strategy

     Mulligan Guide: Kel'Thuzad puts you on a clock immediately with his Frost Blast ability, so you really want to have something you can cast early like Loot Hoarder, Lightwell, or Deathlord. If you can get an early draw of Divine Spirit with a Deathlord, then that's great!

     This is an extremely difficult fight, so don't be surprised if it takes multiple attempts before you succeed. There are two phases to this encounter and in Phase 1 you'll have to deal with Frost Blast on autocast at the start of Kel'Thuzad's turn. Phase 2 will start either when you've broken through his 20 Armor or by turn 11, whichever happens first. When Phase 2 starts you will want to have a way to deal with his two Guardian of Icecrown immediately. You need to be prepared not only to deal with them, but you will need to kill Kel'Thuzad within a turn or two or risk having your most valuable minions stolen with his Chains ability.

     Once you transition to Phase 2 it's important to note that if he casts Twisting Nether, then you probably just want to reset the encounter and start over. It's extremely difficult, if not impossible, for this deck to recover from that card.

     You'll find that whichever minion you decide to buff up will be constantly frozen by various spells through most of the game. If you are able to make one minion large enough (at least 46+ Attack) it is possible to bypass Phase 2 completely and just kill him outright. If this is your first attempt against him it will probably take you a couple of tries to get accustomed to the fight and the Phase changes.
