The guide for this deck is outdated! It needs to be rewritten from the very begginning, though the decklist is up to date.
So, the goal of this deck is to make a lot of damage from spells in one or two turns, getting your opponent totally offguard. Paladin with Lay on Hands and Holy Light? So easy! Pesky Druids with Ancient of War and other overpowered taunts? No problem! Warriors with a crapton of armor? That may be. Anyways, this deck is so fun you may enjoy it even losing (but don't worry, you will win most of the times!) And don't forget, it's priceless to win after your enemy spams "Well played" and shit like that.
Try this deck before you rate it, it works and you shouldn't bash it just because it seems weird.
General Strategy
In a single turn, you will use Sorcerer's Apprentice x2 + Ancient Mage + Fireball + Frostbolt x2 + Ice Lance x2. This combo does 30 damage with 10 mana and just 8 cards. Now you ask me "how the heck am I supposed to save all those cards with the urge of using it in my opponent's powerful minions?" Well, you'll see.
Early game:
Draw cards. Draw a lot. The OTK combo deals 30 damage and needs 8 cards, you may need less depending of how you play, if somehow you have spare mana, use your hero power most of the time in their faces. If possible, try to make your opponent burn cards by using Coldlight Oracle. It feels so good when he loses a scary legendary!
Mid game:
By now he should have cleared your weak minions and started dropping big guys like Chillwind Yeti. You can buy turns with Ice Barrier, hold them with Frost Nova or Blizzard, and if possible you can clear it with Doomsayer. Also, you have a Cone of Cold.
Late game:
By now your hand should be with 8~10 cards, so be careful to not overdraw. Drop your AoE spells + Doomsayer, Ice Block. You can use Alexstrasza offensively if you have Ice Block or defensively if you are kinda screwed up.
Mulligan
Mulligan everything that doesn't draw cards but Mad Scientist Ice Block and Ice Barrier. You want to draw and survive 'til the very late game, when you start dropping a lot of spells. Also, you don't want more than one of those 3 specific cards in your starting hand (Mad Scientist, Loot Hoarder and Ice Block is a good starting hand, Mad Scientist and Novice Engineer x2 is a good starting hand, while Loot Hoarder and Ice Block x2 isn't).
FAQ
WHY DO YOU USE COLDLIGHT ORACLE AND NOT ACOLYTE OF PAIN???
Coldlight Oracles are used because you're sure that you'll get 2 cards. Most of the time you don't care that your opponent draw cards cuz you just freeze, stall and clear everything with Doomsayer. Acolyte of Pain is unstable, it sure can make you draw more when you have a empty hand but most of the time you draw zero, one or burn cards.
I don't have enough dust for (insert card here), what can I do?
- You can switch Ancient Mage for Kobold Geomancer or Bloodmage Thalnos (but if you have bloodmage you probally have everything haha). The rest you shouldn't replace or it may break the deck.
When this deck will lose?
Against someone that is lucky enough to rush you REALLY FAST, control warriors with their stupid armor and a well placed Flare. Other than that, you will win if you play right.
What about the armor from Druid's hero power?
Not enough to disrupt the deck. You have Alexstrasza, and if you must use something so you won't burn cards next turn you can always use a Fireball (don't burn combo cards against Paladins, they will heal everything you did!) But try to save it for the sake of the combo.

Sorry for my awful english and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments below. I really hope that you enjoy this deck! Have fun!
Change Log
Pyroblast for Alexstrasza - Pros: 1 mana cheaper, gives you a 8/8 body, deals more damage and it can be used defensively. Cons: Pyroblast is better against overarmored guys.
Flamestrike for Cone of Cold - Pros: 3 mana cheaper, freeze 3 guys making you buy time and still have spare mana to do more stuff in a single turn. Cons: Flamestrike can clear boards with 4hp or less, that can be better sometimes.
Bloodmage Thalnos for Ancient Mage - Pros: Can save you cards since it does 30 dmg with just one Fireball. Alas, otk'ing your opponent with just 8 cards. Cons: You won't be able to do more than 30 dmg (I hate you warriors and druids out there) in a single turn unless you already have minions on the board and your opponent doesn't have any taunts. Alexstrasza, I choose you! (Thank you for the suggestion, BradenWoA!)
Mirror Image for Mad Scientist - This card is just amazing. (Thanks for the heads up Soumynon)
1xLoot Hoarder for Bloodmage Thalnos - How the fawk didn't I see this, I'm so tired.. (Thanks for waking me up BrainJuggler)
I will try this in the current tabern brawl. I just changed 1xDoomsayer for 1xFlamestrike. Let's see.
All right, so I would like to play this deck but I don't have a few cards. I don't have Alexstrasza, a Doomsayer, and an Ice Block. I've got 200 dust in game atm and maybe a few (keyword few) things I could DE to get these cards. Any help?
I would get the Ice Block first. You can add a Blizzard in place of a Doomsayer for now (I run two Blizzards and 2 Doomsayers). Alexstrasza is the best finisher, but Dr. Boom works decently well with Frost Nova
The idea is pretty nice. I've been constructing something like this a long time ago. I think EmperorT made this more viable and fun. Tonight I did 1xSorc+Kobold+Ancient Mage+2xFireball+2x FrostBolt + 2x Ice lance = 18+12+14 dmg for less than 10 mana. This deck can be improved to make it more viable in ranked, this is probably too slow sometimes but OTK freaking fun. Nice job, +1.
Regards!
Thanks for the reply! Do you have any ideas to make it more viable in ranked matches?
Cheers!
why doesn't this deck run archmage antonidas? Also only 1x ice barrier?
The deck doesn't use Antonidas because you don't need the additional firepower provided by him to win. Since BRM changed a lot this deck, I can try to fit him in later but I dunno if it'll work, because for him to be good you would need like 2 fireballs when you place him on the board. There is only one Ice Barrier because there are other cards that fit in the deck better and it's good to have more than one type of secret so Mad Scientist works better.
Hi I have a question, I don't have the bloodmage and I have only 1 doomsayer. Can Malygos be viable in this deck? I wanna add him to the deck so badly lol.
Actually you can't, cause you'll lose your entire turn's mana just to play him... Bloodmage Thalnos isn't a piece from the combo but he can be the winning factor by adding some power to your spells and drawing cards. If you REALLY wanna use Malygos, there was an OTK Shaman deck that used him with Ancestor's Call (a spell that costs 4 mana), it's still gimmicky but way better than paying 9 mana just to see him get hex'd haha, here's the decklist: http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/147997-pir-shaman-malygos-otk
Thank you

I was looking for a fun mage deck to clear a daily quest with, and decided to try this out (I'm at a bad rank anyway so I'll give anything a try). Boy was I not disappointed. Needed 2 wins, won both games in a row with epic combo finishers with only a few cards left in my deck.
"And don't forget, it's priceless to win after your enemy spams "Well played" and shit like that."
Exactly. This is precisely what made my 2nd win so sweet. I was against a warrior (prob the hardest matchup for this deck). He had control most of the game and burned through both my ice barriers (I only own one ice block so I swapped one with a 2nd ice barrier). He had a huge board (my side was empty) and popped my ice block leaving me at 4 hp while he was at 15hp + 10 armour (thanks to Alexstrasza). He then emotes "I will crush you!" I have 5 cards left in my deck and have every combo piece except for ancient mage. One last aoe freeze in hand to stall one more turn if needed. But then I topdeck ancient mage. I sit there looking at my hand just double checking that I wasn't missing anything and had all the damage, as he continues to use the threaten and well played emotes. I emote well played and he says "My thanks". Then I drop an apprentice and say well played. Again he responds "My Thanks". I drop my 2nd apprentice. "Well Played". "My thanks". Ancient Mage comes down. "Well played". "My thanks". Time to drop the hammer and serve up this warrior a slice of 30 dmg humble pie. As I unleash my spells on his face, he finally says "That was an error", realizing that one of us is indeed dead this turn, just not the one he expected. Most satisfying win I've had in a while.
Haha, it's so sweet to read those stories! You know, this deck used to be way more competitive, I used to get to rank 5 easily with it... Then I needed to study to pass into a university (got it haha) and stopped updating the deck consistently. Maybe I'll rework it, but it's damn hard to make a consistent and fun deck like this one was 6 months ago! Well, thanks for trying the deck, use it against your friends, their "WTF face" is worth so many laughs.
Hey, sorry for the really late response. Some face hunters are tough to play against, but luckily he isn't as popular as before. I see that you're using a Healbot instead of an Alexs, but about half of the times you can use Alexs as an offensive tool to finish your opponent easier.
About the Mirror Images, I use Mad Scientist instead because it's mana cheap too and when he dies he plays a secret saving you 3 mana and a card draw. He's just better.
Btw, I don't know if I change the whole deck, update only some cards or just leave as it is now, I need to see if I can fit some of the new GvG cards into the deck.
THIS DECK IS AWESOME
I put in Archmage, Dr.Boom and Baron Geddon in (works well with freeze)
And 2 unstable portal :D
I like this deck but isn't it worse compared to a Kobold/Sorc x2/Fireball x2/Frostbolt x2/ Ice Lance x2? It's 1 combo card and 2 damage more.
I still prefer Pyroblast to Alextrasza. The former can chop warrior's armor while the latter can't. Alex doesn't bring anything to survivability either as the overall damage the opponent can deal at that time usually far exceeds 15. Except for those accidents when you can play a spare Mirror Image and the enemy doesn't happen to have AoE to clear them and/or removal for Alex (and wastes damage on them).
Also, I like throwing a Fireball in the middle of the match to chop warrior's/druid's armor.
I use neither Doomsayers nor Mad Scientists. The former are substituted for extra Ice Barrier, and CoC, Flamestrike helps, too. Mad Scientists are potentially atrocious against hunter, and that match up is the hardest even without them.
Previously, I ran 1-2 Polymorphs. Now, when I removed them, it's hard to deal with Rag/Alex, and they are in every control warrior's deck (against which I have the hardest match up besides hunters). Is it acceptable to run at least one Poly?
What can I replace Ice Block with? I don't have one ;-;. Also because I don't have Ice Block, I don't need Mad Scientist, so any recommendations on those four cards, also don't have any Doomsayers, so those six cards?
You can try to use Flamestrikes to replace the Doomsayers, but the Ice Blocks are a MUST. Really. It's one of the core parts of the deck.
The winning strategy for this deck is reasonable, at least sound enough for theory. You can perform Alex-burn, split burn or one-turn spellpowered burn to win a game. The 30 damage burn in one turn is a crucial chance against Priest or Paladin, as they can easily heal to stay above 22.
The problems are, however, inevitable at current version. Loatheb, Hunter and control Warrior are hard counter measures, mainly Loatheb.
It would just be a lucky shot if your opponent didn't have Loatheb before you burned him down, 'cuz 2 Coldlight Oracle would increase his drawing as well. That is, he would get at least 15 cards out of the 30 before Alex came down, meaning you have to expect Loatheb in at least 50% of all games. And you can't do anything about it.
The deck is still brilliant, given the lack of proper Mage deck in the meta. Its burn assignment is certainly better than those depend on Pyroblast.
Loateb can make only one bad thing - it ll try to prevent you using second ice block = mean survive for lethal on next turn. Yes secret ll cost 8 mana and using of it ll become kinda uncomfortable... if you does not have Kirin Tor (I think need to find place for him in this deck too). Kirin Tor ll allow you to cast block for normal 3 mana and continue to prepare lethal as usual.
I've been having a ton of fun with this deck. Only change I've made is replacing one Doomsayer with a Flamestrike, but that's just personal preference.
To the people having trouble with the deck, here's the thing: even though it is a combo deck, you will most likely lose if you sit around waiting for the big 30 combo. I've ended most games with 5-7 cards left in my deck, including some I'd need for the combo.
So here are the only 3 things that really matter:
1. Keep your enemy's minions in check. If you have to use some of the big combo cards to do that, then that's what you have to do.
2. Get cards from your deck to your hand as quickly as possible.
3. Be patient. You probably won't win until turn 10.
4. Don't focus on the big combo. There are tons of little combos that can do significant damage. That's the really great thing about this deck. There are all kinds of ways to be creative with the cards depending on the situation you find yourself in.
