Explanation for each card:
- Soulfire is used for removal and direct damage.
- Mortal Coil is a free ping used to finish off a minion.
- Power Overwhelming is used in conjunction with Shadowflame, or used in the wombo combo.
- Ancient Watcher is used with Taunt, or Shadowflame. With Ironbeak Owl, you can attack.
- Bloodmage Thalnos is a staple in every deck that can use spell damage.
- Ironbeak Owl is to Silence your Ancient Watcher, or your opponents creatures.
- Sunfury Protector is for Taunt at important times during the game.
- Earthen Ring Farseer is a very high value 3-drop and a staple in many control decks.
- Hellfire is great board wipe against a rush deck, and it speeds up Molten Giant.
- Shadowflame is great for clearing the board with Ancient Watcher, Sylvanas Windrunner or Leeroy Jenkins.
- Defender of Argus is a beefy Sunfury Protector for Taunt and a buff.
- Leeroy Jenkins is a finishing move that can wombo combo with Power Overwhelming and Faceless Manipulator for 20 damage on Turn 10.
- Twilight Drake is what you want in your hand after using your hero ability a couple times. Play it Turn 4 as a 4/8 or better. Susceptible to Silence, especially Earth Shock.
- Faceless Manipulator is used to copy something big.
- Siphon Soul kills large creatures and heals you, obviously.
- Cairne Bloodhoof is basically a Chillwind Yeti with an Ancestral Spirit built in. It's difficult to deal with, even when Silenced.
- Sylvanas Windrunner is a counter for late game threats such as Tirion Fordring.
- Ragnaros the Firelord is a giant that also makes a great finishing move after you wipe the board.
- Lord Jaraxxus heals up to 14 hit points, spawns 6/6 demons for 2 mana, and attacks with a 3/8 weapon. He can win games where you would have lost.
- Molten Giant is one of the most high value giants in the game, and especially good in Warlock Control decks.
Note: Sylvanas, Jaraxxus, and Cairne can be substituted with Mountain Giants and/or an extra Shadowflame and Ironbeak Owl. Instead of Sylvanas to handle late game threats, you could use Tinkmaster Overspark. Alexstrasza can replace Jaraxxus. And so on.
How to play the deck:
- Your opening hand should primarily have a Twilight Drake in it. Secondary would be Ancient Watcher, Sunfury Protector or Defender of Argus. Mortal Coil is also nice to have early on. If you think you're up against a Murloc rush, or Huntard deck, you should keep Hellfire.
- The first two or three rounds will be spent using your hero ability to fill your hand with cards, until the fourth turn when you play your Twilight Drake (3rd turn with The Coin).
- Hellfire can clean up an early rush. It's alright if you take a bunch of damage early on, this will make your Molten Giants come out much earlier.
- It's important to use your cards very wisely and think a few steps ahead. If you have a Hellfire in your hand, don't bother destroying his creatures until you play it, to get the maximum value. You need to know when you have enough taunt to ignore his creatures and go for the face, that's usually after you play a giant or two with taunt.
- Ideally you want to get the wombo combo for 20 damage to secure the win. Sometimes the game drags on a bit, but usually the value from your giants will give you control all the way until the end of the match.
Good luck, have fun!
all of the handlock decks are alot of fun to play... especially when u get to turn around a lost game with plays like jaraxxus ;)
I played 7h straight with this deck tonight, i remove 1 Soulfire for 1 Void Terror (Eating those Ancient Watcher and drake for a 15/15 minion is priceless when you know opponent doesnt have aremoval left). 22 win 3 loss... (1 Huntard Face and 2 Priest who won by stealing my Twisting Neither)....
AMAZING deck and VERY fun to play with!! Thx a lot... i now have faith in Warlock (I hate zoo)
Played a few games with this deck. It didn't make much sense to me and I got owned. Realized I was using the wrong Giant. Facepalmed. God Bless.
I played against this deck. I almost won with my Rogue Deck. :D
Thoughts on replacing Leeroy with an Alex? Have the full list minus him, and was having a tough time deciding whether to sub him for a Mountain Giant or Alex.
Alex would be a great card
Upside of Mountain Giant: you can play him on turn 4 with that kind of deck which at the very least trashes one removal of your opponent which he can't use on your molten giants later on.
Downside: Sylvanas and Cairne are cheaper to play and provide more staying power on the board. Very good if you are behind on board control.
This seems pretty similar to my warlock deck I've been building lately (I dont have ragnaros and bloodmage). I've added one void terror for the deck and it works wonders for me in different situations with these cards. What do you think about having void terror in this deck?
I'm having real troubles with this deck vs zoo and huntard. How do you do against these?
You really need hellfires, a shadowflame, or watcher + sunfury. That's what you should mulligan for vs hunter. For warlock, look for a shadowflame or hellfire, but instead of watcher go for a Drake. The worst case is that it ends up being control and he owls + mortal coils your drake. Your call on when to play it.
Some decks don't use the poweroverwelming or one of the hellfire for a second shadowflame. This fares better in control, sense sylvannas + shadowflame can pick out a rag or ysera to mind control.
This deck is quite fun. I love warlock, its a shame demon decks cant be more competitive - but this one is a pretty good alternative.
