GUIDE: DRAGON HANDLOCK
Hey Guys!
Welcome to Dragon Handlock, a new deck with the comibation of the power of the dragon synergy and the playstyle of the handlock!
This is the guide, I will try to write down the most important things but if you will not find an answer for your question feel free to ask it in the comment section below!
__________________________________________________________________________________
MULLIGAN STRATEGIES:
IN A CONTROL MATCH:
-Mulligan for Twilight Drake, Mountain Giant and removals like Hellfire, Shadowflame and Darkbomb. Keep the board clean as much as you can until Turn 4 – then you will possibly be able to put down a Twilight Drake or a Mountain Giant. Twilight Guardian is also a good choice, but only if you DO NOT HAVE a Twilight Drake or a Mountain Giant in your hand!
IN AN AGGRO MATCH:
-Mulligan for early removals like Mortal Coil and Darkbomb. Your other keys to the win in this matchup is AOE spells like Hellfire or Shadowflame, and Ancient Watcher with the Ironbeak Owl or Sunfury Protector activators!
IN A MIDRANGE MATCH:
-In this matchup you should try to combine the aggro and control mulligans in a way like the following: Darkbomb, Mortal Coil, Twilight Drake and Mountain Giant is a good choice every time!
__________________________________________________________________________________
PLAYSTYLE:
The playstyle of this deck is very similar (if not the same) to the playstyle of the normal handlocks.
You will always want to use your hero power if you have enough mana after you have played creatures or spells. (If you are running TOO LOW on health [less than 12 HP] then you should consider NOT USING your hero power).
If you have a heal or you sure that your opponent can not burst you down then you can use your hero power on lower health too but it can be a little bit too risky after a certain point! Keep that in mind!
This is a very controlly deck, so keep in mind that this deck has lots of anwers to nearly any situations!
Do not rush because that can cause you to lose the game!
NOTICE: THIS DECK IS NOT EASY TO LEARN AND PLAY. IT REQUIRES LOTS OF GAMES TO PERFECT THE PLAYSTYLE OF A HANDLOCK AND TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF IT!

REPLACEMENTS:
-Emperor Thaurissan: It is not a dragon. Can help you a lot though, so if you can then put him in the deck! If you do not have him: You can always try Loatheb and Sludge Belcher or if you do not want to ruin the curve then a Drakonid Crusher is a good choice (because of the dragon synergy and the same mana cost).
-Sylvanas Windrunner: She is not a dragon either. Way more useful than Emperor Thaurissan, if you have to make a choice then get her first! If you do not have her: Loatheb, Sludge Belcher or Drakonid Crusher (same as in case of Emperor Thaurissan).
-Chillmaw: She is a dragon though! And a KEYCARD of this deck. Destroys aggro decks. There is not really a replacement for her. If you like the idea of the deck you need to get her AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! If you do not have her: Shadowflame, Sludge Belcher or even Baron Geddon! Although keep in mind that your dragon synergy will get weaker as well as your deck if you have to replace Chillmaw.
-Dr. Boom: Really? You still do not have him? Alright, alright, do not panic! He is not a dragon so it will be easier to find a replacement for him! (Although craft him if you can, he is one of the most widely used and most overpowered legendaries in the game. Why wouldn’t you want him?). If you do not have him: Sludge Belcher and Drakonid Crusher is fine. Sorry, there is not really a good 7 mana cost replacement for Dr. Boom… There is a reason why he is one of the most OP cards.
-Alexstrasza: She is a dragon! KEYCARD of the deck. Helps the dragon synergy, and can be a very good defensive card to make you survive or even a good aggresive card if you play it on your opponent’s face for a possible ONE TURN KILL combo (if you already have a good board with giants for example.). If you do not have her: One of the easiest replacements, just put in Lord Jaraxxus. Nearly the same (although he is more of a defensive card). He makes the dragon synergy weaker but what can you do?

F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions):
Q: Shouldn't there be a second Antique Healbot in the deck?
A: The deck contains lots of taunts and taunt activators, AOE effects that these should be more than enough to keep yourself alive. Instead of a second Antique Healbot a second Blackwing Corruptor can be way more useful because of the bigger body and the 'free kill' opportunity with its 3-damage battlecry.
Q: Is there a replacement for Twilight Guardian?
A: In this dragon handlock? Not really. But you can always go with Sludge Belcher instead of the Twilight Guardian. But I would not recommend to do it with this deck then.
Q: How often do your hand lacks of dragons?
A: Not much. The warlock's hero power allows to draw many cards - and therefore the required dragons too - so you will not experience the lack of dragons (except if you are very unlucky).
Q: Highest rank with the deck?
A: For myself it is Rank 1. But I got messages from some people claiming that they succeeded with the deck and reached Legend with it. Congratulations!
Q: Cutting X card for the Y card?
A: The decklist you see is always updated and shows the currently known best version of the deck. You can change some cards in it but do not expect the deck to become better or anything like that.
(THE F.A.Q. WILL GET UPDATED AS MORE QUESTIONS ARE BEING ASKED!)

Is this deck still good or naah?
Thoughts on Chromaggus? And if it goes well with the deck what can it replace?
Just Alexstraza but I replaced that w jaraxxus. It's fine though, I was just curious cuz chrom is gd in warlock but I forgot that in handlock you might end up milling yourself with it
Warlock is one of the few classes (or maybe the only) that has a 100% chance of using him immediately if you play him + hero power, without danger of seeing him instantly removed. I enjoy doing that a lot. Getting milled is indeed a danger... but you are not drawing twice the cards from your deck, but creating copies in your hand. And he can help Mountain Giants come out very cheap, plus increase the health of the drakes. Unfortunately your hand will be full and you won't have time & mana to play everything. But it's something to consider if you are in a tight spot.
I don't know what I would take out for him, though. Certainly not Alex because she is irreplaceable...
-1 Chillmaw
+1 Lord Jaraxxus
chillmaw destroys aggro
I run the same deck but 2 changes:
-1 Hellfire
-1 Chillmaw
+1 Ironbreak Owl
+1 Chromaggus
It works pretty well, and i don't run chillmaw because i dont have it T-T. I will definitly try with him when i get it. Nice work man! +1
I feel you. I also struggle so much with this deck.
But I got a friend who was top 200 Legend EU last season. When he watched my games and told me what to do I had a pretty high winrate with this deck. When I played alone I lost sooo much.
This deck depends soo much on skill. And unfortunately I'm just a mediocre player. One misplay and you're out. :D
It does not forgive misplays like for example zoolock or other aggro decks do. You have to play perfectly. But if you do it has good changes to win. I suggest that handlock is one of the hardest deck types in this games. So I guess we just have to practise more. ^^
But in my version of this deck I use 2x Antique Healbot and just 1x Hellfire.
I also use Siphon Soul instead of Sylvanas Windrunner. And I took 1 Mountain Giant and Chillmaw out and put Loatheb and Chromaggus in it as my friend advised me to do it.
Trying this deck out with Azure Drake and Ysera replacing Chillmaw and Alexstrazsa. Any thoughts?
Hello! I love this deck but I don't have Corruptor.Should I build this deck without Corruptors? And what's your opinion for 2 Corruptor?
Thank you! <3
Rend is sooo situational and his greatest weakness are his stats. 8 Attack = Easy Target for BGH. Only 4 Life = Easy Target for almost everything.
There may be situations where he is great but those will be rare. I'd rather recommend you to use Loatheb instead, since he's really OP and could give you a whole turn to recover. Also he costs only 5 mana so you can use him more flexible.
Being really enjoying the deck and the dragon focus. I'm playing with some modifications to test at the moment.
- 2 Twilight Drake + 2 Azure Drake
- 1 Ancient Watcher + 1 Imp-losion
- 1 Mountain Giant + 1 Shadowflame
- 1 Sylvanas Windrunner + 1 Antique Healbot
I originally played the deck as is and moved up the ladder quickly. I hit a stall at rank 15 and was facing many agro decks. I wasn't able to either get my cards on draw or mulligan so I was constantly struggling to life tap and stay alive. Moving toAzure Drake keeps the dragon synergy and allows me to draw a free card, have a 4/4 on the board for Shadowflame AND boosts my spell dmg which I find a big help when attempting to board clear. I dropped an Ancient Watcher because I don't want to really use my only silence on it, opponents typically ignored it and sometimes I didn't have a taunt available to make it useful. Moving to Imp-losion so far has worked well. I'm able to damage a minion and get free minions on the board for some control. I removed a Mountain Giant for an additional Shadowflame for more board clears. I typically use both Shadowflames and at least one Hellfire per game. I've actually won matches using both Hellfire's :) I added another Antique Healbot to help my odds of survival. I didn't get much value out of Sylvanas Windrunner as of yet.
dont know why you got voted down. I like the changes you made Sylvanas is too slow in this meta and mt giant is most of the time a dead card especially in this more midrange based dragon hand compared to traditional handlock. I wouldn't change the other 2 though :P
Yeah, like I said "testing" :) I added back the Watcher and went with one Twilight and one Azure for the time being.
Ancient watcher is really for for shadow flame since it is 2 mana and has 4 attack. Twilight is meant for ur sunfury and defender is argus to hit early on, which won't work for azure, because of its hp. Mountain giant is needed, because if as you say, you draw him when you have too few cards to play with taunt, then by that point shadow flame is pointless, if you draw him early, 5 mana and u can have an 8-8 taunt plus a 2-3.the last change makes sense if ur in an extremely aggro meta, but in that case add zombie chow to cut off aggro early.
the changes I'd make depending on meta are
aggro
-sylvanis + chow
Control
+ recombobulator -hellfire
combo
- sylvanis +ironbeak - hellfire +antique healbot
this is if the meta shifts too much in on direction, it's too balanced now for any of these
Just made an account to upvote and comment on this deck. Even though it is not super revolutionary making a dragonlock besides the old malygos one never crossed my mind. Especially after botching so many games with dragon priest. I am currently 13-2 with this deck at Rank 4 (climbed from Rank 7 in two days). I went on a 10 win streak before my loss.
For people who are complaining that it loses to aggro all the time, you are are wrong. Either you play bad with this deck, judging this deck after 2 losses or you don't mulligan for the right cards. This deck counters a lot of decks in current meta.
It's a good deck and I am on the tweaking phase - the main disadvantage is the lack of dragons in hand when you need to activate the synergy... Once I settle on my adjustments, I will post something here - so far it works (sort of) without the 2x Ancient Watcher. Typical in Handlock as it may be, other priorities seem to exist here.
I've also found that Alexstrasza turns out to be one of the key cards that define the deck. Swapping it for Lord Jaraxxus doesn't seem to work very well. Due to the face damage you take and the face damage you need to deal, you need to immediately bring the opponent down to 15, or if you are close to losing, bring yourself up to 15. Plus, it helps the dragon synergies...
As for Chillmaw, I also used to think it was overrated, especially since I was lucky enough to get it in the few TGT packs I opened at the release, but after spending time with it I now believe it's a fantastic card which works very well - in this deck too, also because you can choose whether to activate its 3hp board clear by planning the dragons in your hand - just don't put too many in the deck.
Great Deck. I really love the idea of playing a Dragonlock.
But to be honest. I don't think Chillmaw fits good in this deck. In my opinion it's a totally overrated card. I was lucky and got him with TGT release out of a pack and played him since then, especially in Dragon Priest. But he didn't offer me the value that he's supposed to. He's a big taunt. But especially in this deck with your three taunt givers and two Twilight Guardian, you shouldn't need another taunt. The Deathrattle can help against patron. It could also help against agressive decks. But till you can play him at turn seven you're almost dead in most cases. And it could also work out pretty bad for your own board side, since you have 7 minions with 3 or less health. And Blackwing Corruptor only got 4 health too.
I would replace him with Chromaggus. He's a dragon too. A big 6/8 (so also out of range for BGH) and his effect is awesome for handlock. 2 cards for 1 tap. That's great. If you draw 2 Giants at once you'll never wanna miss him again. ;) And he's on curve too. ;)
Also I only use 1 Mountain Giant and replaced him with Siphon Soul. I did this because I don't own Sylvanas Windrunner (I use Loatheb instead) but even if Siphon Soul let's you react more quickly since the enemy can always play around Sylvanas and don't forget the "Fill the board! YOLO"-tactics. If you're unlucky, you might be dead.
I also run only 1 Hellfire but 2 Antique Healbot. I some games I get sooo much face damage. But otherwise if I use both I lose anyways... I'm not 100% sure about that. I'll test more and see how this will work out. ^^
But anyways. Great deck. I really love the idea and at the moment I'm playing my version all the time. All other classes are boring for me now. :D
Hello guys this is my version of this deck, i made some changes because i dont have the Mountain Giant
