Greetings,
2 time legend player Evanius99 here
The second wing of BRM gave shaman the Lava Shock, a card that I have attempted to build strong decks around but the meta would deny them. Overload cards are overpowered for their mana cost, making Lava Shock a way to "Cheat" the downside of these cards. As a last try, I added Blackwing Technician and some dragons to see if it would work. I was dubious because I knew Blackwing Technician was meant to be played with some dragons not yet released but I tried using a few that are playable now: Azure Drake, Alexstrasza, and Ysera (EDIT: added Chromaggus). When I took this deck idea to the ladder starting at rank 10,I had a little trouble. After lots of side-boarding and editing, I have arrived at this deck-list which I have had astounding results against control and surprisingly good results vs. the aggressive and midrange decks.
Anti Aggro Cards:
-Vitality Totem: Yes, I run this. Once you have survived until the late game, you will have board control but not an extremely comfortable amount of life. Drop this down and that should stop any top-decked or saved burst from your opponent.
-Feral Spirit: Great value taunts and also has synergy with Lava Shock.
-2x Lightning Storm: Unfortunately, the meta has got to a place where this is now a necessity for control shaman decks to help survive to let game.
-Lightning Bolt, 2x Rockbiter Weapon: Spells that are good to stem the early aggro tide and also can help finish the game off later.
-Blackwing Corruptor: a Fire Elemental that comes out 1 amazing turn earlier. While putting a threat down it can ping cards left from your opponent's early game, such as Piloted Shredder and Knife Juggler.
- Haunted Creeper: a strong 2 drop that can fight on even once it dies,an important card to fight for board control. The thing about creeper is that it is slightly more resilient than most 2 drops, which is important against zoo. If you have lightning storm or other spells, the creeper can deliver 1 crucial damage to your 2 damage lightning storm, etc.
-Fireguard Destroyer: amazing card that trades 2 for 1 with most 4 mana or less drops in the meta!
Why no Malygos??
Well, here is why: This deck (in my opinion) does not have enough burn to use in the early game and mid-game with enough left over for Malygos. Yes, she is a dragon but this deck isn't dedicated to OTK and a non-consistent 9 drop is not what this deck wants. I must be honest though and say I don't have Malygos so if you have one feel free to test it out and let us know how it goes.
Why Chromaggus??
A. It's a dragon. B. Look at the decklist. If you were to get an extra copy of most of those cards, that would be a huge advantage, right? Ex. an extra burn spell, Lightning Storm, legendary, healbot, etc.
Deck Strategy:
-Start by fighting for the board with your early game spells and minions. In most cases, you should make it out of the early game fairly easily and slide into a late game advantage. Keep building up the board and making good trades. If your opponent has not exploded, you have some strong options to help end the game.
(Alexstrasza just makes these better but is not required to win)
-Doomhammer plus 1 or 2 Rockbiter Weapon.
-Multitude of burn spells: Crackle, Lava Burst, Lava Shock, Lightning Bolt
Mulligans:
Always keep: Lightning Bolt, 1x Rockbiter Weapon, Haunted Creeper, Feral Spirit, Blackwing Technician, and 1x Fireguard Destroyer.
Just mulligan for those cards with an exception in the following match-ups:
Hunter: Keep Vitality Totem + the above.
Warlock (assume zoo) 1x Lightening Storm
On top of all this, the deck is extremely fun to play and your opponent will not be expecting it.
-I will try to answer any questions so feel free to ask
-If you enjoy the deck, feel free to upvote it :).
Running pretty much the same stuff and at rank 9, http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/250792-shaman-with-dragons
I get by fine without a mana tide and I have roughly the same curve.
I usually burst druids and handlocks with windfury on a big minion, with earthshock to pass a taunt that they spent their turn playing, but it looks like you usually shoot them down with big spells.
I don't think the healing totem or healbot makes too much of a difference vs hunter, so long as you can find a heal card in time, tho I can see where mana value of a totem might be more useful than a whole-turn-healbot.
Lastly, I find I'm on auto-lose to zoo but in 8 matches today I haven't seen a zoo yet, so that's the variance. I don't quite get how a haunted creeper is what seems to make all the difference against zoo - I think I'd still be praying to draw a lightning storm, still be desperately throwing crackle at knife jugglers even though the board is already full of imps, and still having my fireguards and fire eles out-valued by power overwhelming and defender combos. I'll give the creepers a shot when I start to see zoo again, anyway, earthshock is important in other matchups, but doesn't do enough against zoo, so I'll try switching those out.
Thanks for sharing this deck.
The thing about creepers is that it is slightly more reseliant than most 2 drops, which is important against zoo. As you mentioned, fireguard destroyer and other early threats are dealt with easily, but something like a creeper is usually ignored. Then, if you have lightning storm or other spells, the creeper can deliver 1 crucial damage to your 2 damage lightning storm, etc. Once it goes to 2 1/1s, it usually will trade with 2 imps. Its far from a solution, but its the little things that count in this match up.
Mana tide I find is a bit better than2 healbots in this build because the more cards you draw, the more chances you have to get lethal, a threat, heal, or removal. Against hunters, I have a strong win rate solely due to the fact that I can out race them... most of the time they leave this totem alive.
Anyways, thanks for the input, its great to see the dragon shaman archetype is moving in positive directions. I really want to make it work :)
Have you been playing this deck this season at all? What have you been testing? I have had some moderate success with this deck:
http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/243495-shaman-lava-shock
Didn't do a full write up due to lazyness on my part, but that deck is doing fairly well at rank 13 at the moment (not amazing, but well). I'm liking EE, especially if it is a BGH target since cards like Dr Boom can stay alive now potentially. One card I am actually hating at the moment is Unbound Elemental...there is just no good time to play it and every class seems to have the answer early game making it only really useful in the late game. I am strongly considering replacing it with some 2 drops or Harvest Golems.
I am considering trying your deck out or merging these together, so I want your thoughts on it if you have time.
Hi,
Currently I am at rank 5, (massive winstreak with this deck to here). Now I am testing a modifiedd version (similar thoughts abount unbound) with -chrommagus, -fire elemental, -2x unbound elemental, -1x faerie dragon for 2 blackwing corrupters, 1 nefarian, 1 haunted creeper. and 1 hungry dragon. I will let you know how it turns out.
If it continues to win at these ranks, I will update this list. I like your deck''s idea also,.. a different approach than most overload decks.. I will try it soon and compare.
Ok cool, sounds good...thanks!
What, no love for Earth Elementals?
i do believe that Lava Shock makes EE less punishing if it dies.
As of now, no love for them, but you have a good point. My problem with earth elemental is that if your opponent has Big Game Hunter (which most do) in hand, you lose tempo and are overloaded big time. Though you may have lava shock, the tempo loss is significant. On the other hand, an early, big taunt is strong in a deck like this if it can get away without being punished. However I feel that since we are not looking for great early game damage on our opponents, I believe a safer inclusion would be sludge belcher. But by all means try it out and LMK if it works out because it certainly has potential.
What is your current rank?
Been on win streak from 10 to 7(current).
Malygos?
I don't think it would fit because this deck doesn't necesarly have enough burn to use early and save for malygos. I don't have malygos but you can test it and tell if it works consistently enough to get a spot. Thanks for the input and I will include something like this in the description because it is an FAQ. If you get good results, please leave another comment to let us know .
i dont have malygos. but i do find MANY of my matches ending on turn 8 or so do to spell damage. i say give it a go
It is true that spell damage is very powerful in this deck (rolling that totem is gg sometimes), but I still have my doubts as outlined in the guide. Still, if anyone has it, feel free to try.
first match against a druid. destroyed +1
I have yet to lose to a control deck when I have a semi-decent hand or better.
trying the deck now doomhammer swa?
Thanks for the support! I always have used doomhammer because I don't have al'akir. the Windlord. In this case though, I think doomhammer is slightly better because of its mana cost, but you can try al'akir out. Otherwise, maybe just put in Dr. Boom.
i dont have any of the others XD. im a no legendary guy (other then naxx and BRM). i swapped with a other 6 mana minion. cant remember. btw "DUNE MAUL SHAMAN" is a EPIC card here. a great 4 drop/ i replaced him with piloted shredder. the synergy with unbound is crazy on turn 3 and 4 if you have a coin.
