Props to Genocide51 for the idea on this one. Basically the main combo in this deck is to stall the board long enough for you to draw into Emperor Thaurissan, Prophet Velen, 2 Mind Blasts, Velen's Chosen, and a Holy Smite in order to kill the opponent in one turn!
Although the main combo involves killing your opponent in one turn, there are other ways to win. The deck does not solely rely upon one combo to win the game. In fact, I've won most games by dealing about 15 damage to the opponent with the taunts and other minions throughout the game, and then I finish them with a few pieces of the combo.
The Combo: This deck has the ability to deal 30+ damage on turn 10 with the combination of playing Emperor Thaurissan on turn 9 (or whenever you get the combo cards in hand), reducing the cost of all of the cards in your hand by 1 at the end of your turn. Then, on the next turn, you will be able to play Prophet Velen with the buff from Velen's Chosen and burst your opponent to death using 2 Mind Blasts (dealing 12 damage each for 1 mana) and a Holy Smite to do the remaining 6 damage. Because of Emperor Thaurissan, Prophet Velen will be 6 mana, Velen's Chosen will be 2 mana, Holy Smite will be 0 mana, and together the Mind Blasts will cost 2 mana, making a total of 10 mana and 30 damage on turn 10 (assuming there is no other friendly minion on board who already has a Spell Damage +1).
Who need's Ice Block? One health and I won.
This deck has plenty of stall mechanics and plenty of draw, so it is be feasible, just as Freeze Mage is feasible. Good luck against Warriors, but other than that, I see this working. Addressing the inclusion of Alexstrasza, I believe she fits in the deck because, if all else fails, you still have enough burst to kill the opponent with Alexstrasza, Bloodmage Thalnos, Holy Smite, and Mind Blasts. It could also make the Warrior match-up winnable because, unlike Freeze Mage, this Priest will be able to burst 30+ damage, which means a Warrior could have 30 health and 15 armor when you use Alexstrasza, putting the Warrior in killing range. The Freeze Mage doesn't have this much burst so the Warrior's armor ends up saving the Warrior in that match-up and the Warrior wins with ease because the Mage runs out of burn. In the Hunter match-up, the heal from Alexstrasza is often game changing. If you don't have Alexstrasza, the best replacement is probably Ragnaros the Firelord.
Resurrect fits perfectly in this deck because it acts almost as a Duplicate. The RNG can also be controlled so as to always bring back a minion with Taunt. For example, you could play a Deathlord as your first minion on turn 3 or 2 (if you have coin) and resurrect it immediately after it dies. Either way, Resurrect almost can't bring back a bad minion if played later on in the game; it will almost certainly either bring back a minion with Taunt, or a minion that will provide card draw.
Lightbomb is one of the most powerful clears in the game. It is very challenging to replace this card, but if you don't have Lightbombs, I would suggest replacing them with another copy of the Auchenai Soulpriest and Circle of Healing combo to clear the board.
Bloodmage Thalnos is great for the spell damage if you want more value from your Holy Nova, or other clears. It's also a decent minion to play on turn 2 to draw some cards. If you have Resurrect and another taunt in hand, I would hesitate to play Bloodmage Thalnos on turn 2 because you want to resurrect a taunt over a Bloodmage Thalnos. If you don't have it, replace it with a Loothoarder or a Kobold Geomancer, depending if you value the card draw or the spell damage more. I would suggest the Loothoarder, however.
Note: OTK means "one turn kill" for those who did not know.
UPDATE 1.1:
UPDATE 1.1: This deck is viable. I've tested it and face hunter doesn't stand a chance. Here is the counter we've been searching for! Resurrect is strong if you use it correctly.
Update 1.2:
Update 1.2: I've added the Auchenai Soulpriest and Circle of Healing combination to help with match-ups against midrange decks. Auchenai Soulpriest is also a solid 4 drop (something the deck was originally lacking) which can help clear the board with the Priest hero power as well as with Circle of Healing. I'm also considering adding Holy Fires into the deck. If Freeze mage becomes very popular on ladder, Kezan Mystic might have a spot in this deck as well. Thank you for all of the constructive criticism!
Update 1.3:
Update 1.3: I've swapped out 1 Acolyte of Pain and 1 Holy Smite for 2 Annoy-o-Trons to have a stronger early game. The early taunt is important.
Would Coldlight Oracle be a dangerous option here as a draw booster? I find my Acolyte and Clerics dying without amounting to much. Also, I don't have the Naxxramas minions yet because I'm a F2P player so it will take some time for me to get them. Any good substitutes?
Hey Dude,
Just wanted to say Thaaaaank yooooou wow this deck is cool man. It really can answer whatever is thrown at it and more than once i was at the brink and came back up to smash them i played 7 games and lost only 1. Awesome fun deck people xD
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it
will you update this deck to tgt?
I've tried playing a considerable amount (~15 games) of this deck at lower ranks (17~15) and have to give you credit that at least this deck is very interesting.
I might just be playing it wrong but I often find myself at around 6 cards in hand relying on topdecks to delay the opposing hero's creatures, often needing to get rid of pieces of the combo (sometimes they're spare anyways).
A lot of the time, I end up with this sequence of plays: Emperor Thaurissan w/o the combo to delay, putting Velen or one of the Mind Blasts at 1 less, Alexstrasza their face for 15, wait to draw into Velen, 2xMindblast, or Velen, Mindblast, 2xHolySmite for the kill. The rest of the time, I just find myself completely clearing their board and waiting ages to draw into a combo for an OTK, but really any powerful cards could have been there instead of the combo cards and they still couldn't have stopped it.
So, I think I'm going to try to tinker around with the decklist a bit and see what happens. I'm thinking of replacing the holy smites, because too often they're just weak removal and I don't get much kill potential from them, and the same for Velen's Chosen. Probably add in 2xFaceless Manipulator, because I can ET and then Velen and faceless Velen. Then it's pretty unlikely that they can kill both and I can get a two turn kill, if not, I can go for the Alexstrasza kill, and the 2xVelen's and Alexstrasza should delay the incoming traffic long enough to pull out damage, or straight out be too much for the opponent. Then I guess I might throw in some silences or Mass Dispel so that Alexstrasza can go through taunt.
Overall, pretty interesting deck concept, but I feel it could use a lot of fine tuning.
I made a deck like this months ago and I found it to be really fun, however in the current meta is was quite hard to stall rush decks until you have all the qualifiers in your hand. In the end it probably only had a 50/50 win rate, maybe lower.
Seams like rly fun deck, but is there alternative for deathlord ?
Thanks! Maybe Malygos and A Defender or Sunfury? Might work.
I dont really use this right now, but I dont see what I would change if I was still using it. Thanks by the way!
Who said handlock is bad matchup for priest :) ?
That didn't quite hit the mark, yep i won that game
Dang!! So close!!
Still going strong with this deck .... it's just so much fun :)
PS: Still running Azure Drakeas a sub for second Lightbomb ... works like a charm.
Nice! Glad you're still enjoying the deck!
I just can't praise you enough ... never had I this much fun in hearthstone since i first finished my control warrior deck.
5 games - Demonlock, Freeze Mage, Combo Druid, Patron Warrior, Handlock .... all wins. (although, handlock going down to 12 health, allowing me to finish him with thalnos+2*mind blast was more supprise factor) the rest was all clear cut wins due to the strenght of this deck.
Thanks again! It brings me a lot of joy that you enjoy this so much! Out of curiosity, were those ranked games? This deck was mainly for fun, but it is certainly capable of wining!
Well, that's how it should be. Joy all around :) Yeah, i play just ranked, mostly for the daily quests so i get from rank 20 to around 10 to 7 most of the time. Right now this deck is my go-to and I always reroll the dailies to get a priest one if possible.
I don't track the stats but going from a feeling and accounting for confirmation bias, my best guess is that this decks has about a 70% win ratio in around 40 games for me.
I get that the sample is quite small and a lot of the games were really close and could have gone either way. But I also made quite a few mistakes (getting my prophet milled 2 times, wasting the clerics) and still won a lot of these games. So there is still room for improvement.
So I would dare to say, that this deck is really capable of going through the ranks. Altough, quite some match-ups (for example handlocks) depend on them not fearing direct damage from a priest and therefore missplaying. So as long as it stays niche and most warriors go for patron and not control, I will gladly continue to play this deck.
Nice! It's a little harder to play at higher ranks, like top 5 because experienced players tend to catch on and the surprise factor isn't there. But 70% is pretty good for 40 games!
Fun deck--enjoyed watching Warlocks kill themselves.
Alexstrasza probably won me the most games. Without him it can feel like a longshot.
Awesome! Glad you enjoy it!
I recognize that this isn't suppose to be a competitive or "good" deck, but the win rate is so low it's not even fun. Since there is only 1 Holy Nova there is no way to deal with very popular decks such as mech mage and grim patron warrior. Speaking of warrior, each matchup is practically an insta-lose situation due to armor.
On top of this, the chance of having Prophet Velen, both Mind Blasts, a Velen's Chosen, and an Emperor Thaurissan in hand is nearly impossible. Even if you do get "the dream", the enemy almost always shows lethal on board before one could play Emperor Thaurissan.
Even as a constant rank 8 player, I have lost 90% of my games (in casual) due to the low quality of the stall cards, the lack of board clears, and the inconsistency of developing leathal because of the small number of specific cards needed to do so.
