So Spiteful Summoner has been tried in zoo before, but that was a while ago. I thought that with the new Rastakhan card Demonbolt it deserved another try, and turns out it's pretty good!
You might ask what the point is in including Spiteful Summoner instead of the usual package. I think that it adds just enough late game to close out more evenly matched games, and having Demonbolt isn't the worst thing in the world, especially because it's zoo. Twisting Nether can help in certain situations as well, especially if you fall behind.
If this deck gets like 8 upvotes I'll try to write up a general guide with mulligans.
Well, it seems like people really like this deck, so here's my attempt at a guide!
Edit: I swapped out the Void Contract for Twisting Nether, because all combo decks except for OTK Paladin and TTK Mage were nerfed to smithereens.
KiwiinBacon made an awesome video on this deck, check it out!
User Khristophesaurus also made a video on this deck, check it out!
Basic Strategy:
So Zoo has always been an aggressive deck, but this particular version adds some late game by including Spiteful Summoner. You want to play just like you would any other Zoo deck, playing for board control early and going face when you need to close the game out.
Basic Mulligans:
In general you want to keep Flame Imp, Kobold Librarian, and of course Prince Keleseth. The early tempo plus being able to damage yourself early is great!
Against Aggro:
You want to keep all previously mentioned cards along with Voidwalker and Happy Ghoul+Voodoo Doctor. Being able to help control the board easily is one of the most important things you can do as Zoo. Despicable Dreadlord is also just so important against Even Paladin or Even Shaman in order to regain control if it's lost in the early turns.
Against Midrange:
Vicious Fledgling is an incredible card if you're going second as you can steamroll the entire game just from that one card. If your curve works out you can keep Fungal Enchanter along side Happy Ghoul and Lightwarden. Those cards can lead to the insane tempo turns needed to close out close midrange matches.
Against Control/Combo:
Usually you don't want to keep anything other than cards which can be used against Midrange decks, because sometimes if you keep Spiteful Summoner you draw all your big spells before you can play it. Vicious Fledgling is pretty much always a keep against control decks due to being able to win you the game.
Bad Matchups:
Now that the meta is going to be turned upside down by nerfs, I'm not entirely sure what matchups you can expect to run into, but Secret Hunter was the definite worst matchup before nerfs, so look out for that.
Odd Rogue also gave me some trouble, but it is winnable if you can draw well.
I didn't meet many Odd Warriors, but I assume that it would also be a difficult matchup, depending on hands.
This deck does ok against most other decks, but we have no idea what the meta is going to be, so good luck!
Card Choices:
Coming Soon.
Thanks for checking out my deck and the guide if you got this far, and if you want to make a video on it, go ahead, and I'll add it to the guide!
The matchup system is far from random. It’s not designed to match you against certain classes but you will face opponents with similar rank. But there is also a hidden score that is determined on your most recent matches. If you won 8 matches in a row you will face players with similar win streaks. If you lost 10 in a row you will most definitely start to see meme decks
ok but how is this relevant to anything swy said?
All I face is secret hunters 3-8 and I switch to destroy secrets (Chief Inspector) then I face priests and other decks..............
matchup system is not totally random.
interactive gameplay vs hunters, only 1 matchup vs priest whole day :D
btw interactive secret 2 mana cost that summons 2-8 taunt and 1-1 divine shield poisinous :D
this looks so far the worst expansion to me/meta
Good to know I'm not the only one suffering from this. No matter which class I play, when I have no Chief Inspectors in my deck more than 60% percent of my opponents are Hunter players. The moment I add two of them, I play against nothing but Priest or Odd Warrior.
-1 void contract + 1 twisting nether for obvious reasons
I've definitely been playing more, and I do see your point, I'll probably update the list with a Twisting Nether instead of a Void Contract as almost every combo deck apart from OTK Paladin and TTK Mage has been obliterated.
The xard wasn't even that good against combo, twisting nether at least has some functionality, I would say also to not run a third 8 cost spell but with warlock's draw engine it's inevitable to not draw "patches"
Awesome deck!
However, I can tell you that Void Contract doesn't work in this deck. Have played 26 games, and only in one single game where I played the contract I did not lose. And even in that game I did not win because of playing the contract, but due to tempo.
I came to realize that every single spell in this game, apart from Demonbolt, is either a) 99% useless as anything other than Spiteful Summoner activator, or b) screws Spiteful Summoner more than any benefit it gives.
After that point, I have tried Lord Godfrey, Lord Jaraxxus, Sea Giant, Charged Devilsaur and Amani War Bear. Still uncertain which one to use. But have had a lot of fun trying.
Plus, Prince Valanar is nice happy goal activator, and excellent against aggro, priests and many aoe. That requires swapping Saronite Chain Gangs to open the 4-slot. The other gang I have replaced first with Doubling Imp and then with Ratcatcher (insane against tempo!).
Hey, thanks for trying the deck out and thank you for your feedback!
I have to say I agree with you about Void Contract, but respectfully disagree with your other choices to replace it. I think that Twisting Nether is a good enough card to replace it, and I can say I've been in situations where I needed it. Without another spell to trigger Spiteful Summoner the deck becomes pretty inconsistent, which is one of the reasons Spiteful Druid and Spiteful Mage don't work at the moment.
As for Prince Valanar, I'm not sure whether or not I agree with that choice, because I don't have him, but it seems to go against the typical Zoo gameplan, but then again, Spiteful Summoner goes against the typical Zoo gameplan, so what do I know. ;)
Played couple ranked and casual games, it was fun, but Void Contract is useless (except for Spiteful Summoner). You either finish the game by then or you just need to play something else that turn to survive. With new nerfs that card is currently unnecessary.
That power swing is still real with SPITEFUL SUMMONER PogChamp !
Hey! Glad you enjoyed the deck, thanks for making a video on it! I'm glad you were able to showcase how great Spiteful Summoner can be.
:)
Nice to revisit Spiteful Zoo. I ran it a few seasons ago with Witch's Cauldrons for spell generation, and DK as a finisher. Druids were unbeatable, but maybe that's better after nerfs.
I'm giving this list a go, although I swapped the single Fire Fly for Arena Fanatic.
You need to start actually going over why decks are bad and stop editing in random wins against terrible players with bad draws. You would do better IMO
Well I loved the video and it was a great showcase of this off meta deck. Get out of here!
You took the time to actually explain to the unable-to-think crowd why it’s plain bad. You got guys like baconboy who play complete trash decks at casual ranks and edit in wins and tell people it’s cool so you get views. Then you have no-thinks commenting on how good it is. Lolz
mazing way
8 cost cards in a zoo deck that’s original. How is this a zoo deck anymore? Meme deck and terrible. Let’s play a two card combo that takes two turns to complete In a zoo deck. Let’s hope we high-roll a decent random 8 cost minion and get lucky enough not to destroy any cards we might need and god forbid somehow still win the game. This deck is so terrible on principal that it should t even be played in casual.
