Right after the hunter nerf I figured this deck would be strong vs the meta and it is! I started playing a lot of hand locks and this deck is a pain especially if you undertaker steamroll.
Later on I started playing more control decks (warrior, mage, druid)
Then when the season was close to ending, I saw the rise of hunter again after ErA got #1 with it, and did well vs it!
This deck is really strong vs the current meta even with people starting to play hunter again as they only run one flare and a lack of card draw. It's hard to play around secrets and you can make big plays by bluffing mirror entity even if you have a counterspell or duplicate down.
I love playing this deck because there are so many different plays you can make to win the game. You mostly go for control, and annoy your opponents with your secrets, but sometimes you even go super aggro and face while frostbolting minions to get extra damage in.
At the end of the season I made a push to see how high I could get with this deck and I ended up having a 85% win ratio to rank 28 after hitting legend.
Mulligan strategy/matchups:
Generally, you obviously want to go for low drops and combos (i.e. undertaker + deathrattle or mana wyrm + frost bolt).
Hunters - you would think that this is a bad matchup for you, but it's surprisingly decent. They usually only run one flare and have a lack of card draw. Forcing them to try to go for board control over face is good because they run out of cards quickly. Mage hero power is really good here as you have the ability to trade well. Mulliganing for mad scientist and water ele is key.
Water ele absolutely destroys them as it's a 3/6 body that stops their bow plays. You have a 1/3 chance to get counterspell with mad scientist and that also screws hunter. Even if they flare your counterspell, that is not completely terrible as mana is very important for them.. Stopping them from shooting even for a turn is good. If you have duplicate, try to set up for getting 2 belchers, water eles or loathebs.
Obviously, you don't want to have 2 secrets down without counterspell. If they spend one mana for 6 then that's real bad.
Mulligan for: mad scientist, water ele, belcher (if you have coin), manawyrm/undertaker combo
Druid - Really good match-up for you. You only lose when you draw poorly and they have double wild growth plays. Hard mulligan for undertaker here. If it steam rolls, then druids have a really hard time dealing with that and they have no answers to your secrets and your removal spells. Polymorph is so good here.
Mulligan for: early undertaker combos, polymorph
Handlock - Decent matchup. You want to go for low drops and have an early counterspell. If you Kirin'tor counterspell turn 3 that is so good. They sometimes drop a sunfury protector to test for mirror entity and then are slowed down, giving you time to set up for board and protecting you against spells.
Mulligan for: undertaker/wyrm combo, kirin tor/mirror
Priest - It's so hard to get the board against this deck if you don't draw well. You need to be super aggressive because they're going to get board back eventually with pyro, nova, cabal, circle combo. If they do that, your only out to win is a flamestrike or really good sylvanas. Make good trades, but other than that, just go for face and use your spells aggressively. Cleric early is also annoying as they just get card draw and you fall behind quickly. Earlier in the season, I had a gnomish in for a water ele and it did me well vs priest. If you find yourself playing lot's of priest, you can do that.
Mulligan for: early combos, mana wyrm/frostbolt
Warrior - Fiery war axe vs your undertaker, wyrm is a bitch. You want water ele for this matchup so badly. They go the distance to kill it, using a lot of cards to get it off the board. Early water ele wins, otherwise it's hard if they kill your early guys with fiery war axe.
Mulligan for: WATER ELE
These are the decks I played the most. If anyone has any questions on other matchups, please feel free to ask.
Some explanation for card choices:
Ran Kel'Thuzad over Ragnaros for most of the season but ultimately decided with Rag because it's a great finisher. KT is hit or miss. Sometimes you have board and don't need KT anyway and sometimes you don't have board and KT is useless. KT did win some games though, so if you like him go for it!
I only run 1 Kirin Tor Mage because I rarely want to hold secrets in hand and usually want to have them via mad scientist. Sometimes I had kirin tor in hand with no secrets and that's not a draw you want to have.
Please feel free to ask me any other questions!
UPDATE:
-1 Harvest Golem
+1 Deathlord
If you're facing a lot of hunter swap in for Deathlord, if control, then swap Golem in.
What are the changes with the GvG update ?
I have been having great success with this deck. I quickly went from 12 to 5 after struggling with priest and warrior decks. Maybe I just think more like a mage. Handlocks have been practically an auto win. The hard match-ups for me have been Hunter and Warrior although I'm close to 50/50 for both.
I did change out the Sylvannas for a Black Knight. I feel like this deck just has to do enough damage to allow its direct damage spells or Rag to win the game. The Black Knight allows more damage to get through sooner.
Isn't it one of the best feelings in the world when playing hunter and you lay down a mirror entity on turn five, they play Savannah, and then you get to polymorph their Savannah. It made my day.
If I do not have Silvana, who then can I replace it? Kern fit?
How do you play against Shaman as based on my experience it's a worse matchup compared to Hunter. Do you think Pyroblast is needed to add additional reach-game ending-card?
I usually do well vs shaman.. just don't extend into lightning storm. Rag should be enough of a card to finish people
"since i've been playing a lot of zoo decks on ladder" Hi ! thank you for sharing your experience ! What you mulligan for the zoo match up plzzz ?
Maybe Mana wyrm / frost bolt , early combos , belcher if coin ? That's it?
lol this deck is the same as the sjow`s put one Poly modification by Kirin omg, sorry for my english
I have a The Beast in place of her. Seems to work ok so far, it is a good minion to get from duplicate and i usually have to trouble taking out the Finkle Einhorn with spells.
Even with Flamestrikex2 and a blizzard this rolls over and dies to zoo... you're usually dead by turn 6-7... or so far behind a board wipe isn't going to compete with opponent's hero power.
This decks' toughest matchups are zoo, handlock and priest... which are pretty much the most popular laddering decks right now.
One example.
It's a nice deck, but I hate playing priests when I'm using something of this nature. Two harvest golems and sludge belchers always ends up in their favor. I'd rather run an additional Kirin Tor and perhaps Azure Drake. Loot hoarder also serves as the only draw, and it can be silenced or taken easily by priests. There are too many priests on the ladder that are running great counters to this deck.
Yeah, the deck is kind of crummy for laddering :(
I played it at ranks 3-5 last season and didn't have anywhere near the amount of problems I had playing tonight with it.
Man, I got a shitty draw and a shittier mulligan against an aggro pally and it just wrecked my whole game. :(
Can't win against Handlock.. :(
I find it funny, that whole deck costs 3820 dust, while sylvanas and ragnaros alone cost 3200 dust.
Antonidas is not for this deck, he is too slow and will be difficult to trigger reliably. Freeze mage is a much better fit for him because of all the low cost spells (Ice Lance, Mirror Image, Arcane Missles, Frost Nova, etc.)
you say you have taken out duplicate for zoo. wouldnt it be better to take out mirror entity instead. because you are only running one duplicate at all.
interesting deck. have been up against this a couple of times. mirror entity is so annoying. nice deck curve as well. what is the best alternative to ragnaros?
Very fun deck, it has some amazing plays in it ;)!
I've removed a mana wyrm for a second kirin tor mage!
Loetheb + Counterspell combo really wins games.
