Rogue has Assassinate for 5 mana, which seems better for single target removal. Maybe Rogue can work something out with bounce effects though. Turn all shadow steps into "deal 5 minion damage". It's also a potentially good card to duplicate with a Shadowdancer, provided you can spare the health.
You forgot to mention Paladin. Their only way to do 4 direct damage is through a weapon which is kinda like "Deal 4 damage to an enemy character and X-2 damage to your hero (where X=attack of the minion you targeted)" and Truesilver Champion is stopped by taunts. I think a midrange paladin would appreciate a 5 mana way to deal 5 direct damage that doesn't care about taunts and with Tirion, The Grimestreet Protector, that 3 mana 2/2 legendary they got and forbidden healing paladin has enough sustain to make up for the health price.
The fact that you can select a target with this and that 5 damage takes out a whole shitload more than 4 damage makes up for the fact that it has -1/-1. The self face damage isn't too consequential if you're playing a control version of paladin, priest, warrior or perhaps even druid.
I can see this working against Sylvanas Windrunner but other than that this card is SHIT.
Best counter for Sylvanas Windrunner
RIP Firelands Portal
There are tons of 5 drops that are really good. This one card can make the outcome bad, but that depends if you are never lucky xD
Is this card the bomb or does it just blow? Will you be having a blast or burning out? Refusing to lose or defusing these dudes?
I really don't know what to make of this.
It feels like a much worse Fireball almost. It can be used in other classes sure, and there's some synergy that can get it back to the hand or avoid the drawback in some other ways, but it's just... Not actually that good?
Think of it like a Bomb Lobber that does one more damage and you can target what you want without having to manipulate the board. And yes it is pretty ineffectual to say a card is bad because it's worse than an incredibly high value card like Fireball (See discussion of how conterfeit coin is terrible because Innervate is better). The deathrattle doesn't matter too much if you're playing something with lots of sustain like warrior, priest or paladin. In fact, Priest would love having a non-combo way of doing 5 damage directly (Most things with 4 attack die to this) and warrior/paladins alternatives for dealing 4-5 direct damage is in the form of weapons that make them take face damage anyway and don't get past taunt. Definitely not good for all classes (Mage and Rogue spit on this card while Hunter and Shaman hate it for not hitting face), but certainly a playable minion in the right deck.
I see what you mean, and I agree. It's not a terribly helpful comment but I think it compares best to something like Fireball, I know it's lofty to compare it to a grade-A, class-specific piece of removal, but bomb lobber's randomness was too notable a difference for me really.
I see what you mean about it being usable in places, it just depends on how you go about it.
Yeah it's not gonna turn the metagame on its head or anything, but it's definitely more playable and useful (again really only in paladin and priest) than people are giving it credit for I feel. Kinda like how Grim Patron was thought to be a really shitty card (and in a vacuum it is!) before BRM came out, and then it found a place in one of the most dominant decks to see play in Hearthstone's history. Of course I'm not expecting it to make as big an impact as Grim Patron (That honour goes to Dopplegangster) but I'll certainly test it out in any midrange paladin decks I make post-expansion.
Finally, a purify-priest meta
I raise you Snipe value!
